- Patty and Ellen relax at the spa. Yeah... that's not weird at all. Ellen's been worried about Patty ever since Daniel "humiliated" her in court. Patty explains how she picks cases. "It starts with a seed of anger" that grows into "full-blown rage." They're going after UNR, Daniel's just a pawn.
Flash to five weeks ago, Daniel's wife telling him he has to make a decision, UNR is poisoning people. Then later, the two of them in a car, Daniel telling her he made a deal with them. She can't believe he gave in. It leads to their big fight before she was killed.
Walter Kendrick, CEO of UNR talks about merging corporate philosophies and synergies on a tape. Ellen, Patty and Tom watch, understanding the merger is why they were so desperate to kill any controversy over Aerocyte. They're going to try to stop the merger.
By the way, Tom's been with the company 10 years. Patty's throwing him a party at her place. Ellen hasn't been there since Patty tried to have her killed there. Although Patty doesn't say that second part, she understands if Ellen doesn't want to go.
Kendrick meets with a representative of the energy corporation, who's concerned about the environmental impact of the merger. He's brought Daniel. Daniel assures Mr. Schiff that UNR complies with eco-standards. They pose "absolutely no risk to the environment," Daniel says.
Ellen meets with her FBI guys. They want her to go to the dinner party and record it.
Patty meets with Mr. Schiff, showing him her allegations. She wants him to stall for time. She's got til the end of next week.
Kendrick meets with Chapstick Man, who tells him he found no dirt on Schiff.
A smoky good old boys club meets to honor Kendrick who, for the occasion, is dressed in women's evening wear and a boa. The MC roasts Kendrick, bashing W. Va. then moving on to Claire Maddox. (To paraphrase: You know why birds fly upside-down in West Virginia? Because there's nothing there worth pooping on.)
Later in the bathroom the men line up at the urinal and the roaster compliments Kendrick on being a good sport. Kendrick responds by punching him in the kidney and bouncing his face off a urinal. Clarke Peters, who was in the audience for the roast, comes in and surveys the damage. "I agree, it wasn't funny," he deadpans. He asks Kendrick about the merger problem. He asks how he can help.
Ellen rides the elevator up to Patty's, cell phone in hand. She enters the apartment where a man tried to kill her and she ended up stabbing him instead. She schmoozes while flashing back to her attack and relying on her champagne for support. Uncle Pete feeds Ellen a folksy line about giving a speech after dinner, then says he's kidding. Ellen toasts Patty, smiling.
Then cut to Ellen at target practice with Wes, where she misses the target completely. She tells Wes about someone trying to kill her and says she doesn't ever want to feel that vulnerable again. They plan to meet again the same time next week. Ellen leaves. Wes calls someone, telling them she suddenly wants to learn how to use a gun. "I don't know if you're safe."
Flash to the present, Wes at Ellen's hotel room door, her telling him he can't be there now. Something's up with him, but he says he just wanted to see her. Then he pulls her close, steps into her apartment and kisses her deeply.
Then on to Patty's husband Phil walking out of a building and Clarke Peters, Dave, waiting for him. They know each other. Dave tells him he has something Phil should know. It's about his wife.
Patty comes home. Phil wants to talk. He tells him about the connected man who came to him telling him there are forces in the business world who would like to put her out of business. There are forces in Washington that might help those CEOs. She might be under investigation. Phil doesn't want to know what she's done, just make sure there's nothing that could hurt her.
Patty meets with Uncle Pete, who assures her she's insulated, all the way back to the days of the old firm. The only thing that could hurt her is Ellen. She brought in the infant mortality case, let's remember. After everything that happened to her, why would she come back to work? Pete says.
Patty drops in on Ellen, acting innocent about the infant mortality case, asking again where it came from. Patty says she's worried someone might have been trying to set Ellen up, something about that case never felt right. Oh, and she hopes Ellen had a good time at dinner.
Uncle Pete makes a call, saying Patty's getting nervous about the girl. They need to take action.
Cut to Ellen meeting with the FBI guys on the street, a man in a hat follows them.
Patty at home, Phil's leaving on business. She asks him to look over the UNR financial report.
At the office, in a meeting, Ellen gets a call from an FBI guy and checks her phone. After the meeting, Patty calls her into her office. She chews her out for checking her phone. She wants to know who called. Ellen says she was late for her one-on-one counseling.
In a hotel room in London, Phil looks over the UNR financials. A woman in negligee comes out of the bathroom. She offers to look over the financials, but she needs to climb on him first.

Schiff calls Patty, he's going to kill the merger.
Ellen calls someone, telling them to meet her at the hotel. The man in the hat watches.
Dave visits Schiff. He wants to talk about Schiff's career.
Ellen freaks out to the FBI dudes. She thinks she's being followed and Patty mentioned the infant mortality case again. They tell her not to have any contact with Patty. They have to take things to their supervisor. The op might be over.
The man in the hat waits in his car at night. Wes gets in the passenger seat. Hat Man shows him surveillance photos of Ellen with the FBI guys. They look like feds to Wes.
Patty walks in to Schiff's office. The merger was authorized. Schiff says they don't have proof UNR is doing anything wrong.
Kendrick has a drink with Daniel. Kendrick is excited because the merger is going through. Daniel asks if Kendrick is going to clean up the mess in W. Va and stop using Aerocyte like he promised. Kendrick wants Daniel to come work for him as head of research.
Uncle Pete reports on Monique Bryant, the client from the infant mortality case. The hospital records check out, but the real Monique Bryant is a white woman. The client Tom met wasn't. "Ellen's a liability Patty, I said it all along," Pete says. Patty gets a call.
Ellen sits down with Patty. She knows Patty doesn't trust her. The FBI guys listen from the van. Ellen's off script. She says they approached her last night to be an informant against Patty. They have pictures of her leaving the office the night of Fiske's suicide. She thinks Patty was right about the infant mortality case, it was a set up. Ellen says the feds can approach anyone. Who else in the office is vulnerable? They're in this together, if Patty goes down, she goes down, too, she pitches.
The FBI guys are pissed, but Ellen says she's their only chance at Patty.
Cut to Uncle Pete pulling up to a barn at night. A man loads things into his car. He calls him Patrick. It's the man Ellen thinks she killed. He didn't die. Pete tells him he has to take a vacation.
Then flash to the day of Ellen's attack, she runs out and even though he has a butcher knife in his side, Patrick takes a breath. Cut to Pete visiting him, handing bandaged Patrick an envelope and telling him his boss can never know about him. (Whew. Are you keeping up?) Pete gives him another envelope, saying he has to leave tonight.
Daniel stands outside his townhouse. It sold. Flash to him telling his wife about the deal he made, her saying if he doesn't stop them, she will. She says she's going to call the EPA, but he says she can't do that. Then cut to Daniel on a payphone, telling someone "we're in trouble." Then Daniel in his car, Chapstick Man getting in, offering his help. He takes Daniel's keys and tells him to park his car, saying in 20 minutes it will all be over.
Phil walks down the street with Patty, telling her that the UNR financials make no sense. Kendrick is grossly overpaying, and he must know it. There must be something else he's getting. Patty tells him his man was right, she is under investigation. He wants her to leave UNR alone, Kendrick is too well-connected. Patty only smiles.
Cut to Detective Metzer, the man who killed Ellen's fiance David. He meets someone. It's Wes. Wes tells him it's worse than he thought. Ellen's meeting with someone, maybe the FBI. Wes asks what he should do.
5 months later Wes packs up his arsenal and cancels a plane reservation. He waits for Ellen in her lobby. He says they're doing work in his building. He wants to stay there. She says sure.
Cut to a car parked on the street in the middle of the day. A bullet rips out of the back, and blood spatters. Wes gets out.
