Exclusive: Harald Zwart, director of 2010 reboot The Karate Kid, has been set to direct thriller Betrayed, which is in development for LA-based production banner Onphaya.
The film will chart the story of a Professor of Archeology who discovers some ancient biblical text fragments that shake the foundations of religious thought. Her personal safety and longtime beliefs are challenged as she fights to overcome evil factions that will go to any length to ensure the truth remains buried in history.
Pic is based on a script by Australian writer-director Antony J. Bowman (Paperback Hero), inspired by a story from Phillip Middleton and Bowman. Peta Johnson will executive-produce the project with Rick Selvage for Onphaya.
“It is important now to bring Betrayed to the screen with its timely yet sometime controversial themes. It is an action thriller for our times”, said Selvage, an executive producer on Amazon series The Wheel of Time.

Christian Slater, Christopher Briney, Josh Radnor, Dagmara Dominczyk and more have joined the lineup of actors participating in The 24 Hour Plays on Broadway.
The annual event sees actors, writers, directors and production staff coming together on the night of Oct. 22 for a brainstorming session. The writers create the plays overnight and then the cast comes back together on Oct. 23 to rehearse ahead of the performance that evening. This year’s event will take place at The Town Hall and will honor playwright and former Law & Order: Svu showrunner Warren Leight, who has been a longtime supporter of the organization.

I have some great news if you’re a Hulu subscriber and feel you’re missing out on Marvel’s Secret Invasion. The first three episodes of the limited series, “Resurrection,” “Promises,” and “Betrayed,” are now streaming on Hulu through Thursday, August 17. Marvel’s alien infiltration thriller is sprinting toward its Episode 6 finale next Wednesday, July 26, bringing the conflict between the Skrulls and humans to a new inflection point.
While Hulu often streams Disney+ shows after a varying window of time, Secret Invasion’s debut on the service marks the first time a Disney+ original series is migrating to the platform. The process of bringing Secret Invasion to Hulu comes ahead of the service integrating into Disney+ as part of a “one-app” initiative. The two streamers could merge as soon as the end of this year.
The Skrulls are an alien race who can perfectly simulate any human being at will.

Three episodes of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” will stream on Hulu ahead of the finale of the Disney+ series. The episodes “Resurrection,” “Promises” and “Betrayed” are set to stream from Friday, July 21, through Aug. 17.
The move marks the first time a Marvel series for Disney+ gets the Hulu treatment. The sibling streamer previously featured the “Star Wars” series “Andor” for two weeks in the fall following its strong performance on Disney+.
The show, which is set in the MCU’s present day, follows Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury as he learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls.
Fury is joined by allies including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.

A series premiere, a long-awaited season return and a bevy of great movies are new on HBO and HBO Max this month. May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.
The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.
Check out the “White House Plumbers” trailer:
The platform will head to the pitch on May 16 with a three-part soccer docuseries “Angel City.” The series goes behind the scenes with the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City Football Club. It reveals the origin story through the 2022 inaugural season of the female-founded and led team — including owners and investors Uzo Aduba,...

The story of Basic Instinct begins with the writer, Joe Eszterhas. At the time, he was one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood, known for writing provocative films like Flashdance, Jagged Edge and Betrayed. Eszterhas had written three movies in a row where his male lead had emotionally manipulated the woman who loved him, so the writer wanted to flip the dynamic, to write a thriller where an evil woman controlled a man effortlessly through mind games and sex. He was fascinated and frightened by the notions of thrill killings and homicidal impulses, and delved into writing the thriller, a combination film noir and detective mystery. Three weeks later, he was done, a script he called “Love Hurts” until changing the title to Basic Instinct the day he sent it to his agent.
His agent was knocked out by it, and soon enough they were holding an auction for every major studio in Hollywood.

John Oliver returned with Last Week Tonight after a three-month hiatus and it wasn’t long before he started taking swipes at Fox News.
The HBO Max host started off the night by talking about the defamation lawsuit Dominion Voting Systems filed against the cable network. Filings that were brought to light had the Fox News hosts like Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham going on-air peddling election fraud claims while privately saying it was “B.S.” and “crazy.”
“Wow, if I were a Fox viewer, I’d feel pretty betrayed by that,” Oliver said. “This is like finding out that Big Bird regularly texted Elmo, ‘F**k them kids,’ and Elmo agrees.”
Oliver continued, “This filing shows the extent to which Fox hosts did not believe the sh** that they were selling, which is completely fine if you work for QVC and you have to fill an hour on...

“Basic Instinct” was a landmark for erotic thrillers, and few of its kind have bested it since.
Paul Verhoeven’s twisted murder mystery debuted March 20, 1992, and grossed over $352 million worldwide as audiences fell for the psychological game between an overworked and under-loved cop (Michael Douglas) and a novelist (Sharon Stone) who might be an ice pick-wielding murderer. Jeanne Tripplehorn marked her film debut as Dr. Beth Garner.
Yet the true mystery remains just how intense the behind-the-scenes production for “Basic” really was. The San Francisco-set psychological whodunnit led to backlash, nightmares, and intense set confrontations.
Even after Stone previously starred in Verhoeven’s “Total Recall,” she had to fight her way into the audition room for “Basic Instinct.” And that famed leg-crossing interrogation scene? Well, it lacked consent about the Nsfw camera angle.
While Verhoeven later teamed up with “Basic Instinct” screenwriter Joe Eszterhas for 1995’s “Showgirls,” “Basic Instinct” spawned a 2006 sequel,...

Third Eye Blind frontman Stephan Jenkins has lived, dare we say it, a semi-charmed life. But here’s something he’s never actually done: interact, or even meet, Tommy Lee and the rest of Mötley Crüe — despite what viewers see on this week’s episode of Hulu’s “Pam & Tommy.”
In the show’s fifth episode, “Uncle Jim and Aunt Susie in Duluth,” Lee (Sebastian Stan) and his Crüe bandmates show up at a recording studio to rehearse. It’s 1996, and Mötley Crüe (and hair metal in general) has been overtaken in popularity by alternative rock — yet the Crüe is still taken aback when they’re assigned to the smaller studio B. Who’s taking the bigger room, the one the rockers are used to? Some new band named Third Eye Blind.
Lee’s not happy, and he barges into Studio A. “Hey, who the fuck are you guys?...

Though Marvel has decided to consolidate all of its cinematic universe offerings onto Disney+, some outliers still live on for other streaming services. In May 2021, Hulu is set to premiere the latest non-canon Marvel series.
The animated comedy Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is set to premiere on May 21 and stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Marvel villain. Oswalt’s Modok is every bit the devious floating head that he’s depicted as in the comics. He’s also your every day family man and the show will take on the format of a workplace sitcom. Sounds kinda fun! It’s no wonder that M.O.D.O.K. is the last Hulu Marvel show standing.
In non-Marvel offerings this month, Shrill will debut its third and final season on May 7. This comedy based on Lindy West’s memoir and starring SNL‘s Aidy Bryant has been a consistently bright presence on the streaming scene since...
