Sepoy Arjan at his court martial talks about his several distinctions including one for bravery during the floods in Maharashtra. In 1872 that area was called Bombay Presidency.
Scenes set on hillsides of India apparently somewhere near Bombay (Mumbai) are clearly filmed in the Western Cape of South Africa as that region's characteristic and unique fynbos vegetation-type is clearly identifiable.
Fogg chides Passepartout for his sentimentality adding "No wonder you chaps (the French) don't have an empire!". This is incorrect: by 1872 the Second French Colonial Empire was well developed particularly in Africa, Indo-China and the South Pacific. By 1914 it was second in size only to the British Empire.
