Exclusive: NBC is developing Co-Dependents, a multi-camera comedy written and executive produced by Pivoting creator Liz Astrof. The project is executive produced by Dana Honor and comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Honor’s Defining Eve Productions is under a deal.
Set in a middle-class town on Long Island, Co-Dependents follows a 30-something brother and sister have gotten older but haven’t really grown up. Childhood rituals and their commitment to each other always take first place over spouses, jobs and kids.
The project is inspired by Astrof’s relationship with her brother, Jeff Astrof.
The two accomplished comedy writers have been supportive of each other. Jeff Astrof left the following comment on a 2017 Deadline story about a Liz Astrof multi-cam comedy landing a put pilot commitment at CBS: “Finally, an Astrof does something of quality! Kill it, Liz!! love, your brother.”

The former Black-ish star will topline and be an executive producer of the network’s comedy pilot Public Defenders, from 20th Television and Wonderland Sound and Vision. Fox’s exec shuffle continues.
Mere days after Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier shocked the network with his decision to move to Roku, the broadcast network’s comedy division is getting new leadership.
Cheryl Dolins has been named senior vp comedy programming and development at Fox Entertainment, replacing Julia Franz in the role. Franz was at the end of her contract and opted to pursue new opportunities after three years in the role. Sources indicate that her decision to leave predates Collier’s move to Roku, which staffers at Fox learned about an hour before the news of his exit was made public.
Franz will continue to serve as a consultant on the network’s upcoming single-camera comedy Animal Control — which marks Fox’s first fully-owned half-hour series — as well as the second season of Welcome to Flatch.

Cheryl Dolins has been tapped as the new senior vice president of comedy programming and development at Fox Entertainment, replacing Julia Franz, who had held the post for three years.

Franz will remain at the company as a consultant on comedies “Animal Control” and “Welcome to Flatch” in a network and studio creative capacity, as well as stay on until the former wraps production next spring.

Exclusive: ABC is developing Worst House on the Block, a half-hour comedy series from 20th Television.
Written by Niki Schwartz-Wright (Pivoting) and to be directed by Natalia Anderson (Maggie), Worst House on the Block has a Beverly Hillbillies vibe to it. In the show, when a poor family from South Texas inherits the worst house on the block in a chic L.A. neighborhood, they cause quite a stir among their new neighbors. Tensions may flare, but ultimately, we’ll watch as three different families, with nothing in common but their Zip code and how overwhelmed they feel by the sheer number of Love Island episodes there are to watch, start to find common ground and, slowly but surely, friendship.
Schwartz-Wright and Anderson executive produce with 3 Arts’ Oly Obst.
Most recently, Schwartz-Wright served as co-executive producer on Fox’s comedy series Pivoting. Before that, she was a co-executive producer on the NBC comedy series Abby’s.

“Pivoting” is a Fox comedy TV series that follows three middle-aged lady friends after they lose the fourth member of their group, Coleen, to an untimely death. Set in the modern era in Long Island, N.Y., the show shamelessly and boldly portrays potentially ill-advised life choices, ranging from odd career changes to marital affairs, while balancing itself out with the characters’ attempts to be better mothers and better friends.

Exclusive: Announced prematurely during Fox’s pre-taped 2022 upfront presentation in May, dark comedy Cindy Snow will not be airing on the network this coming season after all. Following months of back-and-forth between Fox and series producer Warner Bros. Television, the network has allowed the studio to shop the project from creator Steve Yockey to other outlets, and Wbtv is expected to do so. Depending on how that goes, I hear there is still a possibility for Fox and Wbtv to make a deal for Cindy Snow to air on Fox in fall 2023.
This marks a major twist in the Cindy Snow saga, which has involved — directly or indirectly – two Hollywood mega-mergers, a new production model and the soaring importance of digital rights in the streaming age.

Ever since the demise of indie powerhouse Carsey-Werner, there has been no studio focused on broadcast comedy series. Surprisingly, another indie, Lionsgate Television, has found itself carrying the C-w mantle. In a tough economic environment, Lionsgate managed to go 3-for-3 with its existing broadcast series — CBS’ Ghosts, ABC’s Home Economics and Fox’s Welcome to Flatch — all of which were renewed for next season. All of them are single-camera comedies — a genre whose financials have become partially challenging under the increasingly fragile broadcast model — and the tally, three, matches the bulk of Lionsgate’s entire previous broadcast haul of Fox’s Running Wilde, ABC’s Nashville and NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
The pickups cap an impressive streak of 16 renewals for 15 shows and no cancellations for Lionsgate series across various platforms that started in July 2021. And while Lionsgate just reported a quarterly earnings miss, the company’s TV Production...

Who would have guessed that we'd be waiting until the Fox are upfronts are underway to learn the fate of two of its most popular series?
In an exciting development, 9-1-1 and The Resident have landed eleventh-hour renewals at Fox.
Deadline revealed that the deals closed just ahead of the Fox upfront presentation at 4 Pm Et.
It truly was a nail-biting day for fans of both shows because Fox had renewed many lower-rated shows early Monday.
With the news that Fantasy Island Season 2 had been postponed from its planned summer launch to the fall, it seemed like Fox was prepared for losing one or both series.
9-1-1 is Fox-s highest-rated scripted series, and with the news that 9-1-1 Lone Star had been renewed, it was only a matter of time before the mothership landed a pickup.
The late renewals for both shows was a shocker, but the delay was more concerning for The Resident.

We should note here that not every cancelled TV show goes away on bad terms: Among the 20-something or so series we won’t be seeing again in the 2022-23 season, there were a few preplanned decisions — like the ending of NBC’s “This Is Us” and ABC’s “Black-ish” — that got mixed in.

“We’re in good faith negotiations with [studio] 20th,” Fox president Charlie Collier told reporters Monday.
“Based on our long history with that company, we think we’re in pretty good shape.”
The renewals are coming down to the wire, meaning that we will get a decision at some point today.
This is a shocking turn of events that will leaves fans waiting with bated breaths for a potential pickup for the shows.
9-1-1 is the network's #1 scripted series, so the series has been a slam dunk for renewal all season long.

Pivoting was a surprise cancelation at Fox after it emerged that the critically acclaimed comedy would not return for a second season.
The move came after lengthy negotiations between the network and studio Warner Bros Television.
Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment at Fox, said that canceling the show, which stars Eliza Coupe, Ginnifer Goodwin and Maggie Q, was a “hard call”.
“Liz Astrof and Aaron Kaplan are great partners and we have to make tough decisions. We had to look at it holistically, not just as a show, but as a business and in this case we were sorry not to renew it,” he said.
Pivoting had been considered a strong bet for renewal. A favorite of the Fox brass, the show had a rare 100 on Rotten Tomatoes as one of the best-reviewed new broadcast series and also was a strong performer on Hulu, which the network has been able to monetize.

Fox will have several established shows as part of its 2022-2023 lineup. The network has renewed 9-1-1: Lone Star (for Season 4), Call Me Kat (for Season 3), Welcome to Flatch (for Season 2), and The Masked Singer (for Season 8). This news comes ahead of its in-person Upfront Presentation. These series will be joining The Cleaning Lady Season 2, Crime Scene Kitchen Season 2, The Simpsons Season 34, Family Guy Season 20, Bob’s Burgers Season 12, The Great North Season 3, Housebroken Season 2, and Hell’s Kitchen Season 21 in returning to Fox next season. This news comes after the network announced on Friday that Pivoting and Our Kind of People would not be returning for second seasons. The Big Leap was previously canceled after its first season as well. With these latest renewals, that leaves 9-1-1 and The Resident‘s futures still up in the air. While neither has been renewed for a sixth season yet,...

Are these changes a good thing in the first season of the Pivoting TV show on Fox? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Pivoting is cancelled or renewed for season two. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustrated when their viewing habits and opinions aren't considered, we invite you to rate all of the first season episodes of Pivoting here. Status Update Below.

Despite what you may have heard, linear television ain’t dead yet — and we’ve got 10 broadcast shows that proved it over the course of the concluding September-to-May television season. Then again, we’ve also got 10 that definitely suggest the opposite.
Once again, CBS juggernaut “NCIS” was the most-watched show on broadcast, according to Nielsen statistics. The CBS procedural has been the best on broadcast for four years running and 12 of the last 13 seasons (NBC’s “This Is Us” triumphed in 2017-18). CBS’ “FBI” was the only other entertainment program on broadcast television to average north of 10 million viewers per episode this season.
For the purposes of this story, we omitted sports and news programming; otherwise the majority of the top 10 list would be football. The only potential news-programming victim here is “60 Minutes,” the long-running CBS newsmagazine series that can really go either way in terms of genre. We...

Fox is clearing out some more series as it plans for the 2022-23 TV season.
The latest cancellations come in the form of freshman drama Our Kind of People and freshman comedy Pivoting. Our Kind of People launched in the fall with an A+ cast consisting of Yaya DaCosta, Joe Morton, and Morris Chestnut.
It was a sudsy primetime soap created by former mixed-ish showrunner Karin Gist and executive-produced by Empire's Lee Daniels.
The series didn't get the warmest of welcomes from viewers, averaging 1.3 million viewers and a 0.3 rating, coming in just ahead of the already canceled Big Leap.
While the numbers were far below what the network expected, it was a consistent performer, which can help shows eke out a renewal in this day and age.
A recent report from Deadline said that the series was a strong performer on the Fox-owned Tubi, which gave the network pause when it was considering canceling it.

Fox has canceled freshman shows “Pivoting” and “Our Kind of People.”
“Pivoting” starred Eliza Coupe as Amy, Ginnifer Goodwin as Jodie and Maggie Q as Sarah. The single-camera comedy, written by “2 Broke Girls” and “The Conners” alum Liz Astrof, followed three women after the death of their childhood best friend. Faced with the reality that life is short and in a desperate attempt to find happiness, they make a series of impulsive, ill-advised and self-indulgent decisions, strengthening their bond and proving it’s never too late to screw up your life.
The comedy debuted in January and had a 10-episode run.
Created by Wendy Calhoun, “Our Kind of People” starred Yaya DaCosta as Angela Vaughn. It followed strong-willed, single mom Angela (DaCosta) as she set out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary haircare line for Black women. But she quickly discovered a...

The Resident has yet to be renewed for Season 6, but the Fox medical drama is already looking ahead to next season.
Per Deadline, Andrew McCarthy has landed a major recurring role on the final episodes of The Resident Season 5, with the option to become a series regular next season.
For now, the actor is set to appear in the final three episodes of the season as pediatric surgeon Ian Sullivan.
Ian is described as a “brilliant” doctor “with endless charm that masks a hidden streak of narcissism.”
While he is idolized by his young patients, Ian has a “complex relationship with his own daughter.”
News of the new addition comes just weeks after it was revealed that Miles Fowler was scrubbing out of the series as Billie's son, Trevor.

We are only month away from the broadcast upfront week where the networks will unveil their fall schedules but a significant portion of nets’ lineups for next season remain murky. Yet to learn their fate are not only middling performers and other shows that have found themselves on the bubble for one reason or another, but also highly rated series whose renewal is subject to complex negotiations with a non-affiliated studio, such as ABC’s The Goldbergs (Sony TV) and The Conners (Werner Entertainment), CBS’ FBI franchise and The Equalizer (Universal TV) as well as Fox’s 9-1-1 franchise and The Resident (20th TV), or even with the network’s own studio and/or top talent, like is the case with NBC’s Law & Order and Law & Order: Organized Crime and CBS’ Blue Bloods.

A brand-new comedy series that debuted in January this year, Pivoting is Fox’s latest offering. The TV show is created by Liz Astrof and has received generally positive reviews. A review by The Hollywood Reporter praised the single-camera comedy, describing it as charming but, just like most new TV shows, needs a bit of work. “It’s the loosest and silliest the show gets in the first three episodes, and also the most charming. The Law & Order revival got off to a winning start last week, but the series took a massive dip in its second week.
Law & Order: Season 21 Episode 2 had 4.3 million total viewers and a 0.4 rating.
A week ago, the series returned after a lengthy hiatus with 5.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating -- helping it tie for the top spot on the night.
NBC probably expected a better hold week-to-week, but we'll need to wait to see how the show holds up in the coming weeks.
More people could have caught it on streaming this week, so time will tell.
Law & Order: Svu (4.4 million/0.6 rating) inched down a tenth, while Law & Order: Organized Crime was steady at 3.1 million viewers and a 0.5 rating.
ABC's Station 19 (4.3 million/0.6 rating) and Grey's Anatomy (3.8 million/0.6 rating) were down a bit from their midseason launches, while Big Sky (2.3 million/0.3 rating) was steady.

Thursday Olympics Coverage Ticks Up Slightly From Wednesday Lows, Matches First Night Of Competition
The 2022 Winter Olympics, now three Thursdays into competition, are back where they started ratings-wise.
Despite the drama unfolding on ice with Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva’s doping controversy, Thursday brought NBC’s primetime coverage of the Beijing games up only ever so slightly. Per fast affiliates, the latest night of coverage brought in a 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demo and 7.43 million viewers, up from Wednesday’s lows. That said, the third Thursday was also significantly down from the previous week to match the very first night of competition to a tee. Coverage also included women’s speed skating 1000m and women’s halfpipe skiing final.
For the corresponding day of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, NBC recorded a total audience delivery of 17.6 million viewers. This post will be updated with Thursday’s Tad when those become available. The 2022 Winter Olympics, which have sturggled to match previous games’ ratings,...
