- Alex is not the average guy you'd like to hang out with. He is a cocaine addict, a motorbike thief and an insulin dependent. And he's always carrying a gun. But Alex was not always like that. He lost control when his mother died, and his binge-drinking father lost interest in him. But one day, life showed him there is hope. It took him to a place where he found solace and freedom: Ibiza - The Music Island. But that dream will not last long. He returned to London where his dark side took hold of him. Torn between a love affair that lost its spark and another one that was slowly emerging, Alex bets everything on what the Music Island taught him: that breaking all rules will liberate him from the burden of a tormenting past. But Alex will never see again the sun setting on his Music Island. I'm Cosmin P. Zaharia, the director and lead character of The Music Island and I invite you to follow the story of a man who foreshadows where his life should lead him, but could never find the right means to get there.
- Main characters: Alex - A Romanian motorbike thief, living in London. Clara - Alex's Polish girlfriend, living in London. Carla - Alex's Russian secret lover, from Ibiza Alex is a motorbike thief, living in London with his girlfriend, Clara. He is born in Romania and comes to England to escape his past. His mom dies when he is still a child. He grows up in his grandmother's house, torn between a deteriorating relationship with a binge drinking father and a constant life-threatening illness: diabetes. His motherless life turns him into a selfish and rebellious middle-aged adult who lives his life at the edge of reason where cocaine and adrenaline dictate the course of his life. The movie begins with Alex remembering the last day of a short-lived love affair he had in Ibiza, eight months ago, with a Russian girl named Carla. Few days into their romance, she disappears leaving behind just a hand-written note saying that one day she will look for him to explain herself. The action moves into the present-day London, where Alex shares an apartment with his Polish girlfriend named Clara. We find out that Alex and Clara just ended their relationship before he traveled to Ibiza and met the Russian girl. After Alex's return, they got back together, even though Clara already knew that Alex was an unpredictable man who could act on impulse, without caring about their common recent past. She knows he is weak, irresponsible, addictive, and careless, but she still has high hopes that using her abilities as a woman will ultimately put him on the right path and turn him into a family man. To achieve this goal, Alex's safety and their financial security needs to be reviewed and acted upon. But Alex would not care less about her worries. He has never been so confident that stealing motorbikes was an easy job he is totally in control of. After another night of teaming-up with his partner in motorbike theft, Tommy, Alex returns home to find Clara waiting for him. Online news of new terrorist attacks is keeping her awake and apprehensive. Alex tries to ease her mood with stories from Ibiza. As Clara falls asleep, Alex remains awake. He has a flashback of how he has met his Russian girl, in Ibiza. He can see her serving in a bar where one early morning he popped in and had a friendly chat. Minutes later, a familiar face storms in and breaks the magic between them. It is Marco, a major drug dealer, on the island. His father offered Carla's mother a job as a housekeeper on his estate and ended up in love with her while he was still living under the same roof with his with his cancer-stricken wife. Marco found out about his father's secret love and started to behave violently with Carla's mother up to the point when he hit her. Carla already knew things about Marco that made him vulnerable and she went to the police station giving them reasons to put him in jail. This morning when Alex meets Carla, Marco has just been released from jail and he is there to make it even with Carla. Back to his daily job as a waiter in London, Alex is approached by his boss, Vangelis, the owner of the restaurant. A spot check in Alex's bag reveals the possession of a gun, drugs and of a large amount of cash. As Vangelis is making him aware of the consequences, Alex recalls the last moments he spent with his father before he left Romania. A conversation that sums up their dysfunctional relationship, one of the reasons that turned him into the rebel he is today. Stealing motorbikes makes him feel part of a powerful, influential, supportive, and loyal fraternity. What he missed in his childhood, he gained by being a member of this gang. But things are not as perfect as they seem. Police is chasing Tommy, and Tommy needs to run away. As a sign of appreciation for the lasting memories they built together, Alex organizes a farewell party for him and calls out to all members of the gang to get together and say goodbye to their loyal friend. Alex returns home heavily drugged and stops to smoke one more cigarette at the entrance of his block of apartments. It is the same place where Clara finds him early in the morning when she leaves home to get back to work. Alex overslept and he is now late for work. By the moment he arrives at the restaurant, things take another bad turn. The Ibiza girl, Carla, is sitting at a table, waiting for him. The woman who disappeared from his life leaving behind just a note is right there, in front of him. Alex doesn't look happy with her unannounced visit. He looks at her with a critical eye, unable to bond like in the old days. Carla senses his reluctance and leaves the restaurant unhappy. But she doesn't give up. She is waiting for him to end up his shift and have a chat with him. Out in the street, Alex is not impressed with her insistence. He doesn't seem that he wants her back in his life. Carla is adamant. She came a long way to meet him and she wants him back against all odds. She knows who Alex is and how easy he can fall back into her arms. At the end of a conversation in which Alex stands strong on his feet, she gains back his trust. They end up on his motorbike, giggling and storming the streets of London. As Alex and the Ibiza girl are riding his motorbike, Clara is sitting on the edge of the bathtub with a pregnancy test in her hand. She looks happy and optimistic. But this happiness doesn't last long. Alex arrives at home and runs in the bathroom to take a shower. Left behind on the bed close to Clara, his phone beeps and a message pops up on the screen. Clara reads the message and the first sign that Alex was cheating on her is there. She decides to follow him the next day to see if she could catch him in flagrant. While doing so, the truth came in plain view. Alex is cheating on her with the Ibiza girl. As a consequence, Clara goes back home ready to leave him. Alex returns home from his date with Carla under the threat of an insulin shock. He forgets to take his dose and relies now solely on the supply of insulin Clara has bought on the day. But in an act of revenge, Clara doesn't buy him new insulin cartridges. As Clara is reacting more and more violently to his infidelity, the news that she is pregnant with him is brought to his ears. By now, the diabetic shock takes hold of him and he cannot react properly to what he just heard. He tries to kill her, but Clara runs away. Alex succeeds to send a text to Carla about the state he is in, and Carla calls an ambulance. At the hospital, Alex is waking up with Carla on his side. Their conversation leads to a tragic event that just happened a day ago: a terrorist attack in London killing ten people. At that point, neither of them knows that Marco - the man who swore to make Carla pay for putting him in jail - is following her closely on the London streets, waiting for the right moment to take revenge. As they leave the hospital, the villain is waiting for them outside and follows them up until the last scene in which Alex and Clara enjoy tender moments together, on the roof of a London building. Their elation is not long-lived though. After briefly sharing intimacies, Alex remembers about the terrorist attack in the morning and gets concerned about his ex-girlfriend's safety. He tries to get Clara on the phone, but there is no answer. In the middle of this moment, Marco, armed with a gun, faces both of them and pulls the trigger twice. A bullet for Alex and another one for Carla. The last scene of the movie is filmed in a hospital theater where Alex's ex-girlfriend, Clara, goes through a surgical intervention. She happened to be one of the victims who traveled that day with the bus torn into pieces by the suicidal terrorist. Fortunately, she survived.
