- In a distant land, Delilah Briarwood worriedly comforts her dying husband, Sylas, as the doctor tells her there is nothing more they can do for him. Desperate to save her love, Delilah races through a dark forest to an abandoned, derelict library. She scours the shelves until she finds what she is looking for; the dark tome of the Whispered One. She takes it back to Sylas, who is on death's door, and performs a ritual. The face of the Whispered One momentarily appears above Sylas, who heals and becomes strong, though his heart no longer beats and he has no reflection.
In the present in Whitestone, Vox Machina flee the masses of undead now flooding the city. Vax nearly falls to the horde but Keyleth saves him using a wind blast. Grog manages to hold the zombies off until they can all make it to a resistance safe house. The meet up with Archie and the rebels, but the zombies soon break in after them. In the fight, Scanlan takes a deep bite to the arm. They make to the roof and relative safety, but the rebels are losing hope. Cass tries to get Percy to take charge as the next in line for Whitestone's throne, but he is unwilling to take over leadership from Archie. They flee to an alley, and are cornered by an undead giant. Percy reveals his latest invention, and pulls out a massive sniper rifle. He fires, and while the shot kills the giant, it also destroys the gun. Vedmire appears, badly burned, but having survived Scanlan's previous assault, and sends the undead army after them. He goes after the injured bard personally. The party and the rebels fight valiantly in the streets, but Archie is killed by the Duke while defending Scanlan. The resistance fall back, and Keyleth covers the retreat by conjuring a massive ice wall that freezes much of the undead.
Vox Machina regroup with the few remaining rebels at the Suntree. They are demoralized after losing Archie, and Cass tells Percy he must step up and lead his people, weather he feels he is ready or not. He gives a speech that inspires those who remain to fight to the end for Whitestone, and they all prepare for a last stand as the undead break through the wall. They are quickly swarmed by hundreds of zombies, and fearing the worst, Vax'ildan admits his romantic feelings for Keyleth, who is unable to process this in the heat of the battle. The fighters are surrounded by the ravenous horde of zombies and giants, but before they are overrun, a bright light flashes from the sky. A bolt of glowing lightning strikes down one of the giants and dozens of the undead, and from it emerges Pike, fully armored in radiant form. She is astral projecting herself, though her real body is still at the temple. She heals Scanlan, and with their cleric back by their side, Vox Machina turn the tide of the battle. Percy disables Vedmire, and leaves him to the mercy of the people. Keeper Yennen arrives, having rallied the citizens of Whitestone to rise up against their oppressors. Pike uses the power of the Everlight to divinely bless all of their weapons against the dark forces, and they finish off the remaining undead while Vox Machina and Cassandra go to face the Briarwoods.
They enter through a secret tunnel that leads through the dungeons. En route, they come across a one-handed prisoner in a cell, who offers to lead them straight to the Brairwoods if they free her. Percy approaches, the black mist once again engulfing him as he points the Pepperbox at the prisoner.
