- Somewhere in Whitestone, a secret meeting of the Resistance takes place. One of the rebels tells their dwarven leader that "The Kestrel" has been moved under the watchful eye of the de Rolo's traitorous tutor, Professor Anders. Suddenly, the hideout is swarmed by Captain Stonefell, his men, and one of the undead giants, and the rebels are captured.
After Vox Machina arrive in Whitestone and find the Briarwoods 'message', they try to find the last person in Whitestone Percy trusts, a holy woman named Keeper Yennen. They are helped by a resistance member who takes them to meet Yennen. Percy reveals himself to her, and she remarks that he has changed. She tells him that his people need him to lead them against the Briarwoods, and takes the party to an abandoned tavern to talk. Grog is furious at the lack of any ale in the place, and Yennen explains that since the Brairwoods' takeover, all cities resources are extremely low. While the Keeper talks with the others, Keyleth finds roots of the Suntree, and uses her druidic powers to try and communicate with it. Yennen tells the party that the castle is too well guarded to try and take by force without the aid of the resistance, but their leader has been captured and is set to be executed. Percy finds out that the leader is his childhood friend, Archibald. She tells them that if they can free Archie, the rebellion will be at their disposal. Vox Machina decide to stage a prison break.
At the Temple, Pike wanders the ethereal plane, desperately searching for the Everlight. She finds nothing but darkness until the plane expels her empty handed. She is convinced that Lady Briarwood's curse is to blame for her severed connection, but the Head Cleric tells her that no curse is capable of such a thing. Whatever is holding Pike back from her patron is internal.
At the prison in Whitestone, Archie is tortured for information on the rebellion by Captain Stonefell and the Briarwoods' goliath enforcer, Duke Vedmire. Percy climbs a spire and finds Archie using the long range scope of his new firearm. Vox Machina put Vex's plan into action. They split into two teams, the Front Door Team, consisting of Vex, Grog, and Keyleth storm the front gates and fight their way inside. Meanwhile the Back Door Team, Vax, Percy, and Scanlan, try to break in from behind. Front Door Team makes it without issue, but the Back Door Team is stopped in their tracks by said back door. Vax's lockpicks break, Scanlan hurts his hand trying to help, and his magical fist bounces harmlessly off until Percy decides to go in through a window (which he falls out of). The Front Door Team finds the other captured rebels and free them, telling them to keep watch while they look for Archie. Vax, Scanlan, and Percy continue to be stymied by the back door until a guard finally comes out, and they make their way inside. The group reunite and find Archie. Vax easily picks the cell door open (lending credence to his theory that the back door was cursed), and they attempt to make their escape. They are confronted by Captain Stonefell and his men, who are holding Scanlan hostage. Before they can kill him, Scanlan fools them using an illusion of himself , and gets away as a fight breaks out. The resistance member who helped them earlier saves Scanlan and Keyleth, but Stonefell kills her. Keyleth transforms into a huge white tiger and goes after the Captain. The group are surrounded by guards and need a way out, so Archie goes to clear the way. Percy spots Stonefell, and one of the names on his gun begins to glow. The Party and the remaining resistance members make it to the exit when they realize Percy is not with them. Archie, Scanlan, Vax, and Grog go to find him. Percy makes it to Stonefell and condemns him for his part in the murder of the de Rolos. He dons his dark mask as the black mist pours from him. Stonefell charges Percy but is overpowered by the Pepperbox. Percy shoots the Stonefell until his name fades from the gun. Vax finds him and Percy nearly shoots his friend in his vengeful mania. Vax confronts Percy for putting the mission in jeopardy by abandoning the group to kill one man, but Percy states that as the last surviving de Rolo, he must have vengeance no matter the cost. Archie tells Percy that he is not the only survivor. His sister Cassandra is still alive. The party escape as the prison burns to the ground.
Across the city, Cassandra watches the fire. Delilah tells her that nothing has changed.
