Actor Denzel Washington starred as the titular character Malcolm X in Spike Lee’s critically acclaimed biopic. The movie was one of the most important features in Washington’s career, and it also might’ve been one of the most intimidating.
Washington and Lee didn’t have the typical worries filming Malcolm X like underperforming or bad reviews. Instead, doing the feature would have them scared for their lives.

Theaters are in a slump longer than they should be. The last five weekends averaged about $70 million total, while in 2019, the same five weekends with lower ticket prices averaged $190 million. That means success in VOD revenue is all that more important for studios. Even so, on the two top 10 lists from iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), half the slots are taken by companies other than the usual top five.
Results overall reflect the cutback in releases due to last year’s strikes, some longer windows for bigger-grossing studio releases, and, in most cases, a weaker response to other films that made little theatrical impact. All that made it easy for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), by far the year’s biggest hit, to repeat as #1 on both charts for the third week. And that’s with a higher price than usual.

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have been embroiled in a bitter rivalry in the music industry for many years, during which both musicians have been critical of each other. The latter, 36, recently released a new track called Euphoria, in which he once again targeted Drake. Three days after releasing this diss track, he intensified his feud with Drake on Friday morning by releasing a second one, 6:16 in LA.

For the first time this year, CBS did not order any pilots during the traditional pilot season window. And it may not be the last.
“Pilots aren’t dead, I would say pilot season is probably dead for us because why should we be held to that very specific window anymore, nobody else is,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said during the network’s unveiling of its 2024-25 schedule. “We only get so many shots at bat, let’s make sure when we take those swings that the bases are fully loaded for us.”
As Reisenbach revealed in a Q&a with Deadline in January, CBS has switched to a long-term development strategy of making series pickup decisions well in advance to allow for better planning and longer marketing runway. All of CBS’ new scripted series for 2024-25 were locked in by end of January.

You know what they say: There’s nothing like a dangerous situation to bring estranged family members together. Well, at least maybe that will be the case on The Equalizer. Led by ‘Tracker,’ CBS Declares Early Viewership Victory for the Truncated 2023-2024 Broadcast Season
Though the 2023-2024 TV season isn’t over yet, CBS is on track to maintain its title as the most-watched network for the 16th season in a row. Provided it stays on top over the next month, the broadcaster would break its own record for the longest-ever winning streak, which was set between 1955 and 1970.

Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton entering into a unique arrangement, J.Lo fighting evil artificial intelligence, the roasting of an NFL legend, a retelling of the invention of the Pop Tart, Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt at war and John Mulaney’s six-night live comedy event from Los Angeles are some of the big titles hitting Netflix in May.
Debuting on May 3 is Jerry Seinfeld’s directorial debut, Unfrosted. The comedy legend works both sides of the camera for this humorous feature take on the birth of the Pop Tart. The movie is set in 1963 as breakfast cereal giants Kellogg’s and Post compete to become the first company to create a morning pastry. Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan and Amy Schumer also star, with Hugh Grant more than likely to steal the whole film with a turn as Tony the Tiger.

As summer approaches (for the Northern Hemisphere at least), Netflix is set to premiere a fresh season of one of its biggest hits.
Brigerton season 3 is set to arrive on May 16 and will debut a “new crop of debutantes” into the regency drama fray. Other original series of note this month include Indian drama Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (May 1), the Jeff Daniels-starring A Man in Full (May 2), and intriguing Korean title The 8 Show (May 17). Of course, Netflix is also rolling out a suite of true crime docs and docuseries as well. Chief among those options is Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies & Scandal on May 15.
It’s the movie side of things where Netflix is feeling particularly lively though. May 3 sees the arrival of Jerry Seinfeld Pop Tart comedy Unfrosted. That will be followed by rom-com Mother of the Bride (May 9) and the Jennifer Lopez-starring Atlas (May 24).

CBS has been reeling fans in with dramas for over 50 years now, and it doesn't look like the network has any plans to stop.
The network really has something for everybody in its repertoire, whether you're looking for someone quirky and spooky like The Twilight Zone or want a procedural with dramatic flair like NCIS.
There are decades of dramas to be accounted for, but we're going to focus on some of the more recent dramas on CBS.
However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch CBS classics like Murder, She Wrote, Gunsmoke, Dallas, The Twlight Zone, and more.
When you're not catching up on older CBS classics, here's what we recommend watching for a more modern setting.

David Ayer’s The Beekeeper wrestles with the idea of a secret organization with unbound free will to reset society whenever it’s gone astray. Utilizing the honey bee colony as a backdrop for its plot, the action flick attempts to make a serious point about failed systems in government: corruption and how the law isn’t always in the interest of justice. But the film’s major appeal lies in its paced action sequence, likened to cult classics like John Wick and The Equalizer. Although released to mixed reviews, critics and moviegoers agree The Beekeeper is fun to watch. The movie written by

There are movie franchises that are so captivating you just can't wait for the next installment to be released. And there’s even no need in having some sort of a very complicated story in each of them, you just want all the good stuff from the original to be present and it’s good if there are some new details to the story.
In the case of action movies, there’s usually a new villain in every new chapter, but it’s always hard to top the first one, of course, so it’s important that writers use all their creativity.
One of the most popular franchises of action thrillers out there is without doubt Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer. The original movie was released in 2014 and turned the viewers into obsessive fans of his character, Robert McCall.

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter was supposed to be 2024’s second Spider-Man-adjacent film. However, the studio is trying to put as much space between it and Madam Web as possible. Kraven is just barely staying in the calendar year.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the live-action adaptation of the comic book villain, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has been moved from August 30 to December 13. The Karate Kid previously held this date. Sony has since moved that reboot to May 30, 2025.
Karven the Hunter isn’t being moved due to production delays; it has been ready to go for a while. The latest Spidey adversary flick was initially slated to debut last October. Sony decided against this since the actor’s strike would have left the movie without a cast to talk it up in the press.

As has been the case in The Equalizer from the beginning, what Robyn (Queen Latifah) does and keeping that secret affects not just her, but those around her. And sure, Vi (Lorraine Toussaint) and Delilah (Laya DeLeon Hayes) know, but Vi’s girlfriend, Trish (Gloria Rueben), remains in the dark—and that’s a source of conflict in that relationship right now. But given the scope of what Robyn does as she helps people using her skills as a former CIA operative, and that that’s something that she would then have to keep secret, there is the question of whether Trish would want to know. When TV Insider asked Gloria Reuben just that question, she confirmed she would. “I think honesty is key, and I think that she feels that way for sure. If secrets need to be kept in order to protect or honor certain parameters of someone’s extended family,...

With things being so slow at the box office in the early going of 2024, you would half expect to hear people reporting sightings of tumbleweeds rolling across the floors of their local movie theaters. Praise to the cinema gods, May is finally arriving with a promising crop of tentpoles to help rejuvenate the marketplace, starting with director David Leitch's much-buzzed-about '80s series turned contemporary action-comedy "The Fall Guy" (you can read our own Jacob Hall's glowing review of the picture here). But never fear! If you're searching for something to watch at home, too, Netflix will provide in bountiful amounts.
Well, sort of.
Truth be told, next month is looking kind of sparse when it comes to Netflix exclusives outside the purview of shows with firmly established fandoms (see: the latest season of "Bridgerton") or the service's usual smattering of specialty offerings, including live comedy events and ongoing anime series.

Another NCIS spinoff is coming to an end. CBS has canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after three seasons. The two-part series finale will air on April 29 and May 6. And given what series star Alex Tarrant (who plays Kai) previously told TV Insider, it sounds like fans are going to be left hanging. “There is definitely a special twist that comes in towards the end. It was a shock to me when I was reading the scripts, that’s for sure,” he said, adding that the finale “most definitely … ends on a cliffhanger.” NCIS: Hawai’i was the last current CBS show whose fate had yet to be decided. The network has renewed Tracker, The Neighborhood, NCIS, FBI (for three seasons), FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, Ghosts, Fire Country, NCIS: Sydney, S.W.A.T. (after it was previously supposed to be ending with the current seventh season), Elsbeth, and The Equalizer for the 2024-2025 season.

It came down to the wire, but NCIS: Hawai’i ultimately didn’t make the cut for next season at CBS. The news comes days before the network is set to announce its fall schedule on May 2 and before the Season 3 finale of Hawai’i is scheduled to air on May 6. According to sources, the episode was not meant to be a series finale and includes a tease for what was to come but fans won’t be left reeling by a major cliffhanger.
The cancellation is not a complete shocker since, as Deadline has been reporting, NCIS: Hawai’i was on the bubble. Still, the outcome is surprising since an effort was made to extend the well performing drama’s run for at least an abbreviated fourth and final season, with producers agreeing to a massive budget cut and open to other concessions in order to keep the show going.

The cancellation news comes two weeks after NCIS scored a Season 22 pick-up and more than a month after NCIS: Sydney — the well-watched franchise’s first international offshoot — scored a Season 2.

The Equalizer has drawn very good ratings for CBS. Still, it's also co-produced by an outside studio (Universal Television), which is a negative in the economics of network television these days. A couple of years ago, the Magnum Pi reboot was cancelled by CBS when the companies couldn't come to a financial agreement that worked for both sides. Will The Equalizer be cancelled or renewed for season five? Stay tuned. *Status Update Below.

Before I ever saw William Friedkin's classic horror film "The Exorcist," my mother gleefully shared with me all of the horrific urban legends and unexplained mysteries that surrounded the film's production. She believed, as do countless others, that "The Exorcist" was one of many cursed films. The face of a possessed Regan MacNeil was terrifying, to be sure, but movie magic meant to scare me couldn't hold a candle to the inexplicable dread that had me convinced filmmakers daring to tell this story made them a target for actual evil. While I'm old enough now to know better than to believe in cursed films, it's still a fascinating rabbit hole to fall into. Hell, the horror movie streaming app Shudder even has a two-season documentary series called, you guessed it, "Cursed Films" discussing cinema's most controversial and conspiracy-surrounded film sets. Now, a new narrative horror film is dabbling in the world of cursed films,...
