This episode thankfully introduced me and a new generation to E.J. Potter, the Michigan Mad Man. Potter was an unlikely looking hero: nerdy looking, skinny, and bespectacled, he was a self-taught engineer, motorcycle builder, drag racer, exhibition rider and a fearless all 'round daredevil. Mike and Frank come upon two of Potter's old drag bikes that had been home-built by him. Named The Widowmaker and Bloody Mary, one of these crude-looking motorcycles is powered by a 500-horsepower, Chevy small-block V-8 engine, which Potter rode to set one of his several drag racing world records.
The motorcycles are owned by Clyde, who was a friend of E.J. Potter, and he also has a great deal of Potter's memorabilia, including photos, trophies, and Potter's old helmet, with his signature on the back. Though museums are after these incredible, historical moto-relics, they want Clyde to donate them. Mike, on the other hand, also sees the obvious need to share these beautiful machines and the fascinating story of E.J. Potter with the American public, but he realizes Clyde should receive some compensation for his19-year project. Can they come to an agreement and strike a fair bargain?
