The Best Episode of the Second Season (so far)
borowiecsminus2 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Others will go on to beat it, but at the time of airing, this was Season Two's crown jewel. Why?

It's an all-around great episode. There's nothing overtly spectacular about it. No one gets fired, nothing huge happens. None of the criteria (acting, writing, directing) was incredibly over-the-moon fantastic. But everything was good, and that's enough. It isn't incredible television, and it doesn't even close to live up to the stellar first season, but it brings the second to a new height.

Hamm's performance is worthy of praise, as is Jones' and Moss'. It's a show where more is said in silence than in dialogue, and the ending scene is really amazing.

Proves the second season can live up to the first.

Duck is the Devil
TheFearmakers5 September 2023
Well it's obvious why Duck ditched his dog... he wanted a drink, that's all... Oh and, hey, did you hear the one about the ducks in the pond... Someone off-shore threw a ball and it was about to hit one duck in the head, and another duck, seeing this, yelled, "JOEL!!!!!"

Anyhow, good episode following a previous good episode... Mostly it's about Peggy's morphing into becoming a progressive woman in business... One of the strip club guys is Peter Jason, an actor who died in John Wayne's arms and was Orson Welles's favorite, and a former interviewee of mine... I think I mentioned this episode... He didn't like talking too much about the past and that's all I did... But being part of this show is like being on Star Trek or Seinfeld... You become part of the fabric...

The story about Pete and the blonde was intriguing, although she looked a bit too modern... Guess it's that whole Marilyn thing, and the fact women in this era depicted were either trying to resemble the wife or mistress of JFK makes me happy I was born when women had braincells.

Duck Phillips is a Jerk
bcrd50021 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is the episode that really turned me against Duck Phillips because he took out his failings at work and family by ditching his dog on the streets of New York City.

The Draper-Phillips war heats up over an ad campaign that Don feels Duck invented to gloss over his handling of the airline accounts. This is the episode that helps set up the final confrontation between Draper and Phillips over who is more important to the company.

Don continues his affair with the comedian's wife that results in a car wreck that puts Draper in a fix with a local police department over not having enough money to pay the DUI fine and a cop that does not approve of Draper's companion (woman he is not married to) or his attempt to treat the incident too lightly.

Though it is somewhat unclear, it might the beginning of Betty starting to suspect Don has a secret life.

However, Mark Moses has turned his acting career around using the Duck Phillips negative traits in his new role on Homeland. As I stated earlier, what Duck did to his dog was disgraceful.

Cross your heart

Warning: Spoilers
Duck Phillips is excited because he has heard that Playtex, the brassiere manufacturer, is looking to update their ad campaign. Pete and Peggy have been working on the Clearasil's presentation. She is not too excited, and it shows. He comes up with the line "Thanks Clearasil", which he promises he will pass to his father-in-law to get his reaction. Pete insists Peggy keeps on working on his ideas.

The Drapers are attending an event at the country club. Betty runs into a young man from her horsey set. Being Memorial Day week-end, one of the club's directors makes a presentation in which he thanks all the men in uniform attending the party, that day, and all others that went into serving the country, by getting up and being recognized. Don gets up, but decides to leave to go meet Bobbie, who can't see him.

Roger visits Don's office. He tells him to make up with Duck and patch the differences that came between them. Duck, whose former wife had dropped in the office with their two children has brought his dog, an Irish setter that gets the attention of everybody. Duck is visibly upset when his son informs him about his mother's new wedding.

Don finally gets in bed with Bobbie. They are enjoying their sex together, but Bobbie makes a mistake by mentioning another woman's name that she knows has had an affair with Don. His reaction is bad. Don takes his tie and binds her wrists to the headboard and storms out of the room.

Pete gets lucky with one of the models that have come to audition for the Playtex commercial. The blond is impressed in learning about Pete's job at the agency and brings him home. To Pete's surprise, he watches a woman opening a partition in the apartment. It turns out is her own mother. They proceed to have sex in the couch.

The Playtex presentation doesn't go as well as expected. The executives have decided to cancel the campaign, although they are pleased by the presentation. The man in charge of Playtex wants to make it up to the men that worked so hard to get the account, so he offers a night of dinner and drinks. Ken suggests they meet at a strip joint on 8th Avenue. Peggy, who earlier had a conversation with Joan about not being included in the meetings. Joan suggests she stops dressing like a little girl. She takes the advice to heart and shows up at the strip club in a provocative number, even seating in the lap of the Playtex man.

Don had a surprise when Betty showed up wearing a bikini that shows her figure, as she is preparing for a day at the beach. He asks her to put on something less revealing because that look makes her look 'desperate'. The end of the chapter finds Don in the bathroom shaving. Little Sally comes in to watch her daddy, but something Don has been thinking changes the dynamic of the situation and he asks his daughter to leave.

"Mad Men" is one of the best written series of all times. It shows in this episode by the creator of the show, Matthew Weiner. Phil Abraham directed with sure hand. Some of the highlights of this installment serve most of the principals and guest stars to shine.

Bras and Husbands Wanting Conservative Wives
vivianla9 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Playtex is looking for a new ad and the men get to it. They ask Peggy about bras.

Don and Betty go to an event where they mingle with people. There is a swimsuit fashion show with young girls walking out in bikinis.

Don goes to Mrs. Barrett's place to make love. Don is surprised to hear she has a daughter and asks if that is all the people that keep popping up. She makes the mistake of mentioning the name of a woman Don had an affair with. She tells him how he has a reputation and many women talk. It sours the mood and Donald gets up and leaves.

There is a casting in the office and women are seated in their beautiful dresses to take it all off and model in their underwear. Peggy comes across this casting and she did not know about it. She asks a man about it and he says a lot of men are in the room for the auditions.

Betty is wearing a yellow bikini with a coverup, serving breakfast to the kids when Don walks in. He disapproves of the bikini that shows off her figure. She bought it at the auction and everyone bought a swimsuit apparently. Don says he does not want other men ogling her. I hate that Donald goes out and sees plenty of women naked but does not want his own wife to dress as she pleases.

Duck's ex comes into the office with their two kids and dog named Chauncey. Duck is not happy that his ex is remarrying and gave his son 150 dollars because he wants them to be happy. I don't like how jealous he is. The men in the office expect their wives to be good and conservative but they go out and do whatever they feel like doing.

The men discuss the Playtex ad proposal and one of them bring up how everyone is a Jackie or a Marilyn. He opens the door and points out the women who copy the style of each of these celebrities. At the meeting with the clients, Don shows a rough ad with the same women in black on one half and white on the other. One is to represent Jackie and the other is Marilyn. Playtex does not accept the offer but asks the men to hold it for them.

The men decide to go to a strip joint to not think of the office. At the strip joint a main girl strips with nipple pads on and leans out her body to the men. The men giggle and laugh with delight. Peggy shows up in a pretty dress and sits on one of the men's lap.
