Dark, intense. The best season so far!
agakra25 May 2021
I really liked season 3 of the Sinner, it gives a deeper glimpse of detective Ambrose's personality and own struggles. It was fascinating to witness how Jamie reflected detective's own fears and how they relationship evolved. They both stood at the edge of the abyss and were more alike than any of them wanted to admit. Some parts of the plot were illogical or unnecessarily prolonged, that's true, but the overall reception of the series in my view is very positive and I'm happy season 4 is in the making! Bill Pullman is the best.

Good acting by most with a drawn out storyline
bay-7700810 February 2021
I agree that the actions of some of the characters in many ways were unrealistic and hard to swallow. I thought Jamie, the lead suspect character played by Matt Bomer was very well done. I liked that this season focused on the vulnerable aspects of a sociopath and showed a side we rarely see on TV or in movies. I think he did an incredible job as an actor making me sympathize with him on occasion (especially at the end). I also liked the Jessica Hecht character, Sonya. Overall the acting is good. Bill Pullman's Det. Harry Ambrose is dark and troubled, and he's in constant pain with his sciatica, which may be why he takes such stupid risks. He seems to have had a very bad early relationship with his late father which leads me to the box he received with his belongings. Why did the writers not delve into this more to give us a little knowledge of Ambrose's past. I think S3 should have had a little less focus on the criminal and more on Ambrose.

Not at all as good as past series
greutskol25 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Past series have been focusing on how trauma effects people and this series is just a big psychopath show. I hate the dude. He thinks he is so smart and talented and original but he's just really psychotic and rude and entitled.

Too much Nietsche
bouchal31 January 2022
Not realistic psychological explanation. However with excellent actors. I was not really interested in the fate of the detective and even less interested in the fate of Jamie.

One Dimensional
Hitchcoc11 August 2023
Since Jamie is really the only focus here, we are forced to either be empathetic to him--or furious at him. The episode has Harry looking at avenues that will expose what he is. He has brought forth violent behavior in the past, hated by some contacts. He has been studying Nietzche and trying to live his philosophy. He knows he is a danger to himself and others but is too much of a coward to confront these things professionally. He is a sad, entitled character who decides to follow the depths of depression to make his way. One really weak scene is when Harry manages to get him into an institution, but the man who interviews him is so incompetent that it doesn't help a bit.

Season 3 is By Far The Best
gooblers-9465310 February 2021
Totally disagree with everyone else. Seasons 1+2 were both good. But season 3 is BY FAR the best season of the Sinner.

Pullman is great, The acting is very good across the board. And the writing and storytelling is much stronger than in seasons 1 and 2, which were convoluted by comparison.

Best of The Sinner
sjanders-8643015 April 2023
The death scene with Matt Bomer and Bill Pullman is as a good a death scene that you will ever see. The tenderness and heartbreaking connection is tear jerking. The fact that this is too men makes it more powerful. Men loving each other is the subject of Season three. It is deliberate that Bomer's face is more beautiful than all the women characters. Closer has two men connecting sexually; Jude Law and Clive Owen on a computer exchange, but here deep emotions are evident. The crying later by Bill Pullman takes this viewer into a man's emotions as never before. Nick the character who comes to see his intimate college friend was summoned by Bomer. Why did he start the downward spiral? His wife was about to have their baby and this birth drew him back to the death obsessed times with Nick. After Bomer pulls the emergency brake Nick tells Bomer not to call 911.

Why didn't Bomer say this to Pullman?

Bomer loses his friend and does not recover. His wife couldn't save him. Why did Pullman shoot. He didn't have to. He had no right to shoot.

Redundant, boring, pretentious
kellylaf29 June 2020
The first two series of Sinner were so good, however this third one is incredibly boring. Bad acting by both lead actors, pretentious and redundant monologues, and a boring storyline. The first two episodes were interesting but after that the plot is just repeating and going in circles

Pretentious piece of ...p
vonsippen25 June 2020
I noticed that some of the series play with the viewers patience...like creators knew that we're watching it at home and there's no "walking out of the cinema" option... The story which in all details and necessary character development could be told in 3 or 4 hours drags to the pointless eight hourly long episodes. Maybe actors are paid by the hour. Who knows... But this is the case. Pretentious dialogues, same set of Bill Pullman's faces...sometimes inadequate for the portraiting emotions or even situation. More drama than there really is or should be. Unrealistic behaviour. Unbelievable decisions of characters. If I knew all of that I wouldn't bother. Would you?

Ummm cootie catchers?!?!
lorikerostrout13 February 2021
Boys, put down your cootie catcher and step away slowly. One star for the Leela character and one star for detective Soto. They at least behave the way normal humans would if they found themselves involved with such a dangerous dude. The show contains endlessly annoying psychobabble and I wouldn't watch it except that I liked the first two seasons. Those two grown men with their cootie catchers though, are a hoot! Third graders adore those things!!

OK
gabidhoy14 February 2021
I LOVED season 1 and 2. Season 3 brings some interesting characters and good acting but many of the decisions made by the characters make no sense. The topic of "we are all going to die" is also too repetitive and I did not like to see the detective always doubting himself out of nowhere just because he chatted with the sociopath a few times? Doesn't make much sense. I did enjoy many episodes but at the end of the show it was dragged for too long and instead being interesting this season became almost to fantastical and hard to believe.

Boring
sristigemsurvi21 June 2020
Trailer was so promising but the actual story turned out to be boring. There was no element of suspense. After seeing season 1 and 2 was waiting for the 3rd season but it's disappointing.

Below average
gailmck-6222426 June 2020
I loved the first two series of The Sinner and was totally disappointed in the third series. Bill Pulman's character seems a bit like a modern day Colombo however he lives right on the edge and does some extremely stupid things, making some very dodgy relationships along the way. He is not like a traditional cop and lives on the edge, almost the wrong side of the law himself. He is vague and weak. Not a team player, more vigilante. The plot was confusing to me and I kept feeling like I had missed something. Harry, played by Pullman, almost seems like he is running from the law himself. Not recommended, there is a lot better stuff out there to watch. This is drawn out and painful, a bit like an extended trip to the Dentist.

Hated it and far away from reality
deepakimt20 June 2020
So much hated it. If you want to continue loving Season 1 and 2 never watch this series. It's just plain stupid story direction and even the new cast except the two cops. Rest all are dump

Ugh!
patmcdoug28 March 2021
Liked season 1 a good bit, and season 2 a little less so. But season 3?! Wow! Horrible is too weak a word. While the prior seasons had many far fetched scenes, they were nothing compared to the full-scale departure from reality of this season. By the end I could feel no empathy or attachment to any of the characters, to the point that an action movie bloodbath ending would have actually been welcome!

A psychological torture
shailbmn19 April 2021
After watching season 1&2 had high hopes. But this illogical irrational trash wasn't expected in my wildest dreams. I mean there is a psychopath with whom everyone is in love with and want to help despite knowing the man is on a killing spree including a detective, a painter, his wife. How gross can that be. Totally illogical and anyone with a rational mind must avoid this season.

Season goes off the rails
nostaticone10 June 2021
Being a big fan of the first two seasons (well written, well acted, well directed), I couldn't believe how bad the third season is.

It started off OK with two compelling leads, Matt Bomer and Chris Messina, drawing us into their dark secret world. But, as the story progresses, things become increasing absurd and redundant, as if the writer didn't know where to go with the plot so he started repeating scenes and dialogue--and most alarming: creating totally implausible twists and turns. Harry Ambrose becomes an annoying, pathetic idiot, something we wouldn't have seen in the first two seasons. And, we're expected to believe that the crazy character played by Matt Bomer can just roam around freely committing nutty crime and after crime because he's so charismatic, or whatever. By episode six, I was screaming, "Give me a goddamn break! That's ridiculous!"

This reminds of what happened to True Detective after a stellar first season. Sloppy writing with absurdly contrived plot devices made TD season two almost unwatchable. That how season three of TS feels.

Hopefully, season four wlll be better, because it couldn't get much worse than this one.

LackLuster.
wandernn1-81-68327415 August 2021
Basically as the season goes on more is revealed aboutt he Professors past and how him and his buddy did bad things when they were in school together which is why the Professor killed him.

Sinner knows. He finds out from Prof's old college roommate that the Professor was photographed after a night out of getting down in the mud with Buddy Boy.

Meanwhile the Professor is falling apart mentally. Almost to the point of killing his own newborn baby.

So The Professor goes to Sinner and asks for help. They go to a mental health dude. But just like your typical DumbA mental health dude, he acts like a superior Ahole and The Professor bolts on The Sinner.

Thanks where this one ends. 5/10.

Whose Idea Was THIS Season
cidbrenn6 February 2022
Agree with all the other reviews. Season 1 was great. Season 2 was still good. Season 3 was so boring, draggy, stupid and all the characters were just underdeveloped a-holes so who really cares what happens to them? This is going in the wrong direction. Only watched till episode 5. Lost interest.

SOOOOO Many Holes
mtcreer14 August 2022
Agree with most. Season 1 was great. Season 2 was very good. Season 3 sucked. So many plot holes. So many character divergences. Repetitive themes throughout. It's really bad...

EDIT: I wrote this review halfway through the last episode. I quit watching with 7 minutes left. How is this a 7.0 on this site?!?!?! I usually trust this site. I know 7 isn't great but this should be a 5.5 at best. I couldn't even finish it.

SOOOOO bad. I hope the writers get better or find different jobs...

Harry Is An Idiot in Season 3
angelalwheaton21 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There is something to be said for the fine line that I am sure detectives walk between finding justice and doing whatever they need to solve a case. This season however turned Ambrose into a limping, elderly, imbecile with some weird verbal affectation and facial tics. His manipulative nature really puts him on par with the supposed antagonist, and he comes off seeming like an idiotic, narcissistic buffoon. This is first actual villain that seems to have some evil within him and it honestly appears to turn Harry on more than the sadistic hooker who choked him out in Season 1. I hope season 4 redeems this garbage and gives Harry a brain again. I was rooting for him to get fired in every episode.

Disappointing after season 1 and 2
anatodoc12 October 2023
I really like the first two seasons, but season 3 is a mess. The premise is fine and it starts out pretty good for three episodes. It then jumps the shark and keeps on jumping with each successive episode. The subject of this season is a psychopath, so you expect him to act as he does. Harry and the all of the secondary characters do not act like rational people, which results in the murderer Jamie being free to fall deeper and deeper into his abyss and turn into a serial killer. Harry, was a brilliant and compassionate detective in season 1 and 2, with a few of his own demons whcih made him interesting. Here, his demons, especially when exploited by Jamie, turn him into a blubbering ineffectual mess - decidedly not the person you want trying to bring a murderer to justice. Harry's failure at his job results in the death of one of Jamie's victims and later, a botched prosecution of Jamie's first murder. Harry, of course, is not held accountable, and continues to allow himself to be manipulated by Jamie. The painter, a victim and Harry's love interest this season, acts so irrationally, it make you want her to die in her final encounter with Jamie. All of this is bathed in sophomoric philosophical mumbo jumbo that drags on for ever in each episode.
