Loma — the indie trio featuring members of Shearwater and Cross Record — have announced How Will I Live Without a Body?, their first album in four years.
Ahead of the LP’s June 28 arrival on Sub Pop, the band has shared the first single, “How It Starts,” along with a video directed by and starring Loma’s Emily Cross.
The follow-up to 2020’s acclaimed Don’t Shy Away, How Will I Live Without a Body? takes its title from artificial intelligence, specifically an AI trained on the work of — with her permission — avant legend Laurie Anderson.

After a banner 2021 for high-end genre films, industry vets are hopeful that the fantastic can resurrect the corpse of pre-covid theatrical distribution.
As bolts of lightning reanimated the body of Frankenstein’s monster, Julia Ducournau’s “Titane,” which turned heads when it took the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and Sundance Grand Jury prize-winner “Nanny,” a supernatural tale from director Nikyatu Jusu, have revitalized the festival scene.
While “Nanny” may have been the jewel in the genre crown at Sundance, the influence that genre cinema held over 2022’s first major festival was wide-ranging and undeniable. Chloe Okuno’s psychological thriller “Watcher” impressed — segueing into several sales deals — as did Hanna Bergholm’s psycho-horror feature “Hatching,” sold by Wild Bunch and Charades-sold Spanish standout “Piggy,” the follow-up to Carlota Pereda’s 2019 Spanish Academy Award-winner “Cerdita.”

Tom Hanks, Gerard Butler, Evan Rachel Wood and Rosamund Pike headline projects being brought onto Berlin’s virtual European Film Market.
Just how large its top-tier offers may be, and the volume of deals, are still open for debate.
“Very compact,” said Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz of the EFM, which swelled somewhat thanks to a flurry of title announcements on Feb. 4, followed by a steady trickle of big unveils.
“The EFM does not look like it will have the comparable volume of the AFM,” Mister Smith’s David Garrett said. “But there will certainly be enough to whet people’s appetites.”
The market has, in fact, been building for nearly a fortnight. Following the IFC Midnight/Shudder domestic deal at Sundance for “Watcher,” AGC Studios moved forward its virtual EFM buyer screenings of the genre film by two weeks, closing international with Focus Features.

A prequel film is in the works to the 2009 horror-thriller “Orphan,” and Isabelle Fuhrman, who played the duplicitous orphan girl Esther, will reprise her role in the new feature, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Julia Stiles will also star in the new film titled “Orphan: First Kill,” which is directed by William Brent Bell and is in production now in Winnipeg, Canada.
In “Orphan: First Kill,” previously just titled “Esther,” Fuhrman returns as the murderous sociopath from the original but follows her life before she assumed the identity of Esther. A combination of star vehicles and high-octane action pics dominate our 2019 list of hot Afm market debuts.
Several glossy packages have come together in the last week: Channing Tatum is playing an Army Ranger with a canine buddy in road-trip comedy Dog; Rachel Weisz will star as Elizabeth Taylor in activism-focused tale A Special Relationship; Zac Efron is tracking John McAfee in the jungle in comedy King Of The Jungle; and Jessica Chastain will play a tormented artist in Losing Clementine. The market now looks well-stocked with titles that should pique buyers’ interest.

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror comedy Nekrotronic will be released in the Us in select cinemas and on VOD and digital HD on August 9 by Momentum Pictures.
“I’m really excited: I think day-and-date is the future for most independent films in the Us,” Kiah tells If. “Some say it is the end of cinema but it’s not: it’s a different way of delivering films to eyeballs.”
One advantage of the day-and-date strategy is limiting the potential for piracy. The Roache-Turner brothers’ Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was available on iTunes in the Us before the Australian release. “Piracy killed us,” he says.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, Nekrotronic stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.

The new arrangement will cover marketing and distribution of all films from eOne and its partners: Sierra/Affinity, Amblin, DreamWorks Studios, Participant, and Reliance Entertainment. It also covers eOne acquired titles including Gurinder Chadha’s “Blinded by the Light,” “Judy,” and Australian pictures “Top End Wedding” and “Babyteeth.”

Seeing worldwide sales sell-outs on “355” and “Ironbark,” from FilmNation, and Studiocanal’s “The Secret Garden,” the 2018 Cannes Film Festival proved the second big market in a row to buck, although only in part, longer-term pessimism.
After glacial-paced early trading, titles sold from Cannes first weekend both to the U.S. and abroad at a steady, though never spectacular, rate.
But if Cannes, like February’s surprisingly buoyant Berlin, suggested there is still life in the international independent film business, despite a tepid Sundance and dire American Film Market, it also delivered a sobering snapshot of new market realities.
Whichever way the 2018 Cannes Film Market is taken, heartening signs of continued market traction have to be placed in a context of a longer-term attrition in the independent theatrical market affecting both many mid-sized English-language movies and arthouse titles alike. The bottom hasn’t fallen out of either market. But their theatrical space,...

After a brutal stretch, a market is finally bringing back the swagger. Despite the Netflix-Cannes snafu which dominated the build-up to the festival, this is the most optimistic mood at the outset of a film mart in years.
The Efm heralded the bounce-back. It was a stabilizing market and the first for some time that indie buyers and sellers re-discovered common ground that had been more of a no-man’s land during a multi-year reconfiguration process needed to work out what constitutes a theatrical movie in today’s digital-first world.
The Marché sees the launch of an array of intriguing prospects even if some remain very much that – prospects. Big canvas movies come in the shape of Agc’s WWII epic Midway, Lionsgate’s franchise-hopeful Kingkiller Chronicle and FilmNation’s starry ensemble 355 which is getting a glam presentation on Thursday. Mel Gibson’s Destroyer has yet to find a sales home,...

Exclusive: In what shapes up as another very strong Cannes title for next week, Jake Gyllenhaal is set to produce and star as Leonard Bernstein in The American, with Cary Joji Fukunaga directing and producing. Bron Studios will produce and finance a film that begins principal photography in the fall. Sierra/Affinity will sell international territories and Endeavor Content is repping North American rights.
Michael Mitnick adapted the script from the Humphrey Burton biography Leonard Bernstein. Structured in five movements, like a symphony, The American follows Bernstein from conducting the New York Philharmonic at the age of 25 and through a meteoric rise to fame, all while struggling both personally and publicly to be everything that everyone expected him to be, most of all himself.
The film was developed from scratch by Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker through their Gotham-based Nine Stories production banner. It marks another Nine Stories-produced vehicle for Gyllenhaal to play a non-fiction character,...

It’s been two years since scribes Daniel & Kevin Hageman climbed aboard the Guillermo del Toro-produced adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s best-selling children’s book triad, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, but the long wait appears to have not been in vain.
Earlier today, Deadline reported that Entertainment One (eOne) and CBS Films would co-finance the André Øvredal-directed feature, with principal photography expected to get underway in Toronto this summer.
Producing alongside del Toro is Sean Daniel (Everybody Wants Some!!), Jason F. Brown (Ben-Hur), Elizabeth Grave and J. Miles Dale, who also served on Guillermo’s Best Picture-winning, The Shape of Water. Exclusive: Todd Garner is moving his Broken Road Productions banner onto the Paramount lot. Garner has made a two-year first look deal to develop and produce movies for both Paramount Pictures and Paramount Players.
Garner, who makes mainstream comedies and genre films, had most recently been under a deal with Covert Media, where he will continue to product numerous projects he set up. It is a homecoming of sorts for Garner, who started his career in accounting for Paramount Domestic Television, assigned to The Arsenio Hall Show.
“It was a huge success, back when Bill Clinton came on to play his sax and Eddie Murphy would show up,” Garner told Deadline. “I would walk around the lot and couldn’t believe I was on it. Waters’ hit novel Fingersmith, about a lesbian love affair in Victorian England, has been transported to 1930s Korea for a new film. The author explains how it remains faithful to her original
“‘You pearl,’ I said. So white she was.” With these words, Sarah Waters confirmed the arrival of a world-class writer capable of turning conventional literary erotics upside-down and inside-out. The dialogue is uttered in a scene of lesbian lovemaking that has been cited by both male and female, gay and heterosexual commentators as one of the sexiest encounters in literature.
Waters’ first two novels, Tipping the Velvet and Affinity, had signalled a powerful new voice in lesbian fiction, but Fingersmith took it to a new level, its kaleidoscopic prose and structure creating a dizzying variety of desires and perspectives. Shortlisted for the Booker prize, it was one of David Bowie’s 100 must-read novels and has had a lusty afterlife in theatre and TV.

Lots and lots of horror novels to put the willies up you this Halloween - and we've added a few more...
It’s October. The leaves are turning brown and the nights are drawing in. It’s cold and it’s raining and it’s nearly Halloween. The perfect time, then, to curl up with a good book and give yourself the creeps. But which book?
You could go for one of the classics – Dracula, or Frankenstein, or something by Lovecraft or Poe – or you could go with the zeitgeist and pick up Stephen King’s Cell, or even The Shining, if you’ve not read it already. Any of those would be perfectly good choices. But let’s face it, if you were gonna read one of those, you wouldn’t need me to recommend them.
Here, instead, is a list of 25 other horror novels guaranteed to give you nightmares…...

If you're lucky, you've already seen The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister. And if you haven't, don't fret. The drama, which aired on the BBC, is making the Lgbt film festival rounds — it opens San Francisco's Frameline Film Festival on June 17 and plays Los Angeles' Outfest in July, among others.
The film stars Maxine Peake as Lister — a landowner, traveler and industrialist who lived in the early 1800s and who also happened to be a lesbian who wasn't shy about her sexual orientation. Lister's journals — numbering more than 25 volumes and 4 million words — have become some of the best lesbian nonfiction in existence. AfterEllen.com caught up with Peake to discuss why she pursued the role, doing justice to the role for the Lgbt community and how Lister has changed her.
AfterEllen.com: You initially heard of the part from a friend and chased it until you landed it — all without having read the script.

This new AfterEllen.com column, "Great LezBritian," will be a fortnightly stroll through the very best of British lesbo-centric entertainment and culture. Plus there will be some jolly good interviews with the top ladies who are waving the flag for gay UK.
"Great LezBritain" authors Sarah, a Londoner, and Lee, a Glaswegian, met in a gay discotheque one bleak mid winter, eight years ago and have been shacked up together ever since. When not watching Tipping The Velvet, they find time to write, run a PR company, DJ at their own club nights and love a bit of jam on toast.
Journalist and author Joanna Briscoe and her partner Charlotte Mendelson are two of the UK’s modern day literary darlings. Currently living with their two children in North London, both women have received a barrage of critical acclaim and recently found themselves named a "Power Lesbian Couple" by the London Standard.

A one-off spy thriller starring Rupert Penry-Jones was a ratings hit for BBC One last night (Sunday), early figures suggest. The 39 Steps, a new adaptation of John Buchan's classic novel, averaged 7.28m (27.4%) over 90 minutes from 8pm. It beat a new episode of The Royal on ITV1, which had just 4.25m (15.9%) in the 8pm hour. BBC Two's Top Gear Vietnam Special put in a strong 6.07m (22.7%) over the same period. ITV1's one-off ghost drama Affinity was a ratings disaster at 9pm. The two-hour piece, set in the 1870s and starring Zoe Tapper, could only muster 2.7m (12.1%). This contributed to ITV1's primetime share falling to a miserable 12.9%, down seven points on last week. A new series of Celebrity Mastermind launched to 5.54m (26.6%) on BBC One at 6.30pm, then Antiques Roadshow picked up 7.41m (32.3%) in the 7pm hour. (more)...

2008 will always be known as an historic year — for the passing of gay marriage laws in two states (and the tragic reduction of those rights in four), for the election of the nation’s first president of color, and for the downturn of the economy.
Years from now, when we talk about 2008, it’s likely that we’ll be discussing these events, rather than any specific lesbian film that came out.
But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a banner year for lesbian cinema.
While there were still extremely few mainstream movies with notable lesbian/bi characters, the overall quality of representation was decidedly — and dramatically — on the rise.
2008 saw an encouraging dearth of murderous, victimized or man-hating lesbian characters in any level of production (from smaller indie flicks to big-budget movies).
Women of color were better represented than in many years past, gross stereotypes were avoided, and new talents emerged.
