FilmDistrict has released two new preview clips from director Troy Nixey's (Latchkey's Lament) upcoming R-rated horror movie, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. The movie is a remake of a 1973 TV movie of the same name and was co-written by Matthew Robbins and Guillermo del Toro, who first collaborated together on the script for Mimic (1997).
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes as Alex and Kim Hirst, a young couple who inherit an old mansion and begin renovating it. Unbeknownst to them, however, their renovations stir up some dark forces dwelling within the mansion, forces that wish to claim Alex's young daughter, Sally (Bailee Madison), as one of their own. Alan Dale, Jack Thompson and Nicholas Bell also star.

After releasing a teaser poster in May and one in early June, FilmDistrict has finally released an official theatrical poster for co-writer (with Matthew Robbins) and producer Guillermo del Toro's new horror movie, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark. Directed by Troy Nixey (Latchkey's Lament), the movie is a remake of the 1973 made-for-tv movie of the same name and stars Guy Pearce and Katie Holmes as Alex and Kim Hirst, a young couple who unwittingly awaken the evil creatures dwelling beneath the mansion they are renovating, creatures which long to claim Alex's daughter, Sally (Bailee Madison), as one of their own.

The first teaser trailer for director Troy Nixey (Latchkey's Lament) new horror movie, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, debuted at last year's San Diego Comic-Con, but now that the movie has secured a distributor a full-length theatrical trailer has finally been released. Written (with Matthew Robbins) and produced by Guillermo del Toro, the movie is a remake of the 1973 made-for-tv movie of the same name and tells the story of a young girl (Bailee Madison) who is sent to live with her her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) and unwittingly awakens the evil creatures living in the basement of the mansion that they are renovating.

One of this summer's films that doesn't involve superheroes or aliens (presumably) is 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.' It's not a spin-off of the 90's television show for children, 'Are You Afraid of the Dark,' rather it's an R-rated horror/thriller starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, and Bailee Madison. The film is directed by Troy Nixey. A catchy name, but likely not a familiar one as it's his first feature film. Nixey wrote, directed and produced a short called 'Latchkey's Lament,' which is about a married couple who just happen to be keys. They're snatched up by a villain, the aptly named Keyfiend. 'Hellboy' and 'Pan's Labyrinth' director, Guillermo del Toro wrote the screenplay and produces 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.' Below, you can take a look at the latest poster for the film courtesy of Fangoria who scanned it from The New York Times.

Alright so how's this for a change: instead of talking about one of the millions of projects that Guillermo del Toro might one day get to make, let's take a look at something he actually did! Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is a remake of a 1973 made-for-tv movie about a young girl who moves into a house with her father, only to discover that there are also malevolent creatures living there with them. It is co-written and produced by del Toro, but directed by Troy Nixey (Latchkey's Lament). After making a good first impression with audiences at Comic-Con, a teaser trailer has now arrived online and it is sure to make more than a few people wet themselves (I imagine it would be even more effective in a dark theatre). The movie seems to be a dark fairytale of sorts, and with a young girl at the center of...

A creepy teaser trailer arrives for the Guillermo del Toro-produced Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark…
When Guillermo del Toro attaches his name to a movie, you've got to sit up and take notice. Under his tutelage, we've already seen, to name a couple of outstanding examples, Juan Antonio Bayona's spine-tingling horror The Orphanage, as well as the gory sci-fi mayhem of Vincenzo Natali's Splice.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, which is co-written and produced by del Toro, is a remake of a 1973 television horror movie of the same name, and is the first feature-length movie from director Troy Nixey.
Having watched Nixey's debut, the short film Latchkey's Lament, it's obvious why del Toro would choose to team up with the former comic book artist turned filmmaker, since both share a dark and distinctive imagination.
Bravely opening with almost a minute's worth of complete darkness,...

A few months ago Cinematical was invited to visit the set of the new film written and produced by Guillermo del Toro - no, not that one. A remake of the 1973 Australian film of the same name, Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark is a fantasy-horror film in the vein of Pan's Labyrinth, which certainly would make the Spanish auteur an obvious choice for its director as well, but del Toro turned the directing reins over to Troy Nixey, a first-time filmmaker who impressed him with a short film he made called Latchkey's Lament.
Last week Latchkey found its way onto Youtube, and having seen it on the set of Dark, we can attest it's just the kind of visual odyssey from which great directors are born. Meanwhile, the original Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark is now available on demand via Warner Archives if you need further incentive to check out the upcoming remake,...

If you wondered how Troy Nixey went from comic artist to director of the big-screen remake of Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (produced and co-written by Guillermo del Toro), look no further than his film Latchkey's Lament. Nixey's whimsical, independently created short tells the bizarre yet touching tale of the love between two keys, and the creature who wants to eat them. (Yes, really.) It's very polished and stylistically evocative of directors like Tim Burton and Terry Gilliam, and...

Two more actors have joined the cast of Guillermo del Toro's Don't Be Afraid of the Dark to be directed by his protege Troy Nixey. Guy Pearce is in final negotiations and 9-year-old actress Bailee Madison is set to star with Katie Holmes (who we announced in May). Madison will play a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend (Holmes) and discovers they are sharing the house with demonic creatures. She discovers and is fascinated by the creatures - until they prove dangerous. Pearce will play the father, an author frustrated by his daughter's tales of monsters, not believing her even when his girlfriend backs her. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is based on the 1973 ABC TV movie. Guillermo del Toro co-wrote the updated script with Matthew Robbins (Dragonslayer, Mimic). Del Toro first discovered director Troy Nixey after watching his short film titled Latchkey's Lament...

Guy Pearce is in final talks to join the Guillermo del Toro-produced remake of Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark, the remake of the 1973 TV film of the same name. Pearce joins Katie Holmes, who's already set to star, and child actress Bailee Madison, who's landed the key role of his daughter - who can see dead people, or at least monstrous poltergeists. The film sees Pearce as a author who is frustrated by his daughter's tales of monsters in their new house, even when his girlfriend (Holmes) backs up the child's stories. We guess that someone's going to learn the error of their ways in a Big way by the final act. It's being directed by Troy Nixey, a protege of Guillermo del Toro, who we're guessing was won over by Nixey's fantasy short Latchkey's Lament. Madison played Josh Hutcherson's younger sister in Bridge to Terabithia, and isn't quite ten yet.

Over the past few years we've been seeing Katie Holmes in the tabloids and on celebrity gossip blogs a lot more than we've been seeing her on the big screen, but I guess that's to be expected when you're the mother of Tom Cruise's baby. She did appear in Mad Money and an episode of Eli Stone last year though, and now she's got a new thriller lined up from Guillermo Del Toro aka The Busiest Director on the Planet. The movie is called Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and it was scripted by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins (Mimic), but based on a 1973 made-for-tv flick. The story revolves around a young couple and their daughter who move into an old house that is "inhabited by small demon-like creatures". The movie will be helmed by Troy Nixey, another up and comer described as a "Del Toro protege". Guillermo Del Toro...

Guillermo del Toro and Miramax will produce a remake of the horror-thriller telefilm "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark," the specialty distributor's first big dive into genre filmmaking under president Daniel Battsek.
Comic book artist-writer Troy Nixey will make his feature directorial debut with the adaptation of ABC's 1973 cult classic. Del Toro is adapting Nigel McKeand's teleplay with Matthew Robbins, his writing partner on the 1997 horror film "Mimic" for Miramax's former genre label Dimension.
(Bob and Harvey Weinstein took the Dimension Films label and several genre projects with them when they left Walt Disney to form the Weinstein Co. in 2005)
"Dark" centers on a young girl, sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend, who discovers sinister creatures that live underneath the stairs.
Michael Falbo, Miramax's director of production and development, will oversee the project for the studio under president of production Keri Putnam.
The film is in its early stages; research and development of the monsters hasn't begun yet, and other producers might come aboard. Moviegoers can expect an upscale creature feature along the lines of del Toro's "Pan's Labyrinth," with an emphasis on distinctive characters in keeping with the Miramax slate.
Directed by John Newland, the original telefilm (known as "Nightmare" in Europe) gained a cult following through syndication and home video release.
Nixey wrote and directed the 2007 supernatural thriller short "Latchkey's Lament," a mix of CGI animation and live action. He has attained cult status for illustrating "Batman" and "Matrix" comics as well as writing and illustrating Dark Horse Comics' "Trout," which is in development at Phoenix Pictures.
"It has always been a dream of mine to work on a project with Guillermo, my favorite filmmaker," Nixey said. "I had no idea it would be on my first one out. Miramax's faith in me is everything a first-time director could ask for."
Nixey is one of several emerging filmmakers, including "Orphanage" helmer Juan Antonio Bayona, mentored by del Toro.
Peter McPartlin, vp business affairs and legal, negotiated the deal on behalf of Miramax. Endeavor and Gary Ungar at Exile Entertainment, who rep del Toro and Nixey, negotiated on behalf of the filmmakers. Robbins is repped by the Pitt Group.
