An instant classic single by The Smiths, "Ask" got this video made when they were promoting the compilation album "Rank". A cute and artsy video for the
single already existed back then, directed by filmmaker Derek Jarman, and a small clip from it appears in this video as well, along with a live performance
by the group. Except for some slow effects whenever Morrissey appears on screen (almost unrecognisable behind those dark glasses), the key event unseen in
their other videos is the presence of guitarrist Craig Gannon, who joined the band during the firing of Andy Rourke for a couple of months. Yet both appear
on the video so for this brief moment registered on tape The Smiths became a band of five guys.
Nothing wrong with the video except some poor image quality but it's really live performance rather than some of their audience performances where the original track was put afterwards, so you'll may notice a different intro and a different end to the original song, and some vocal variations by Morrissey. Fine moment of theirs but I still prefer Jarman's charming video with the shy teen showing his affection for the pretty girl as dancers keep moving around them. 7/10.
