As if last year’s nostalgia-infused sensation Stranger Things didn’t make it clear enough, the world is currently going mad for all things eighties. Not the big hair or the shellsuits, mind – rather woozy synthpop, blood-rich neon and anything related to the heyday of creepy body horror.
With Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski’s splattery new gorefest The Void out now, one that gleefully mashes up loving homages to H.P. Lovecraft John Carpenter, David Cronenberg and more, here are the essential throwback horror movies that you need to watch in preparation.
The House of the Devil
Writer/director Ti West is at the forefront of recent revival horror and this deliciously slow-burning spooker remains one of his best. Drawing on the ‘Satanic panic’ craze that swept America during the eighties, it’s the unbearably suspenseful story of a young woman (Jocelin Donahue) whose babysitting job at a creaking,...

No, you don’t have to do a double-take. You did just see Haley Bennett in The Magnificent Seven, and now she’s back only a few short weeks later with another blockbuster affair, Tate Taylor’s The Girl On The Train. The Paula Hawkins adaptation also stars Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux and Luke Evans, but Bennett gets to star as arguably the most important cog in Hawkins’ twisty, mysterious machine. For those of you who read the book during its best-seller run, Bennett plays the part of Megan Hipwell. You know how things go.
For those who don’t, understand that Tate Taylor’s suburban nightmare is never what it seems. The film itself has screened to some pretty rocky reviews so far, so it looks like I’m in the minority of critics who believe The Girl On The Train is a homegrown story of passion...

Is satire obsolete? Our appalling present political reality has surpassed some of the wildest jokes in director Joe Dante's 'exaggerated, outrageous' 1997 cable movie. An immigration squabble snowballs until a renegade state governor closes his border and threatens to secede from the Union. It's a 'political idiocy' version of It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World ... and nineteen years later, we're stuck living it. Burying the Ex (2014)
Written by: Alan Trezza
Directed by: Joe Dante
Cast: Anton Yelchin (Max), Alexandra Daddario (Olivia), Ashley Greene (Evelyn), Oliver Cooper (Travis)
Breaking up is tough all the way around. Yeah right, usually of all the misery is one sided. The one who lowers the hammer of heartbreak and the other who is left to pick up the pieces. That’s usually the way it goes down, but not always. On occasion there are really, really nice guys who suffer through a bad relationship (sometimes an entire lifetime) because there just doesn’t seem to be a way out without sorrow, a feeling of betrayal, or an amped up display of crazy. Typically it’s a combo of all three.

We recently saw a new batch of stills for the upcoming Martyrs remake and with the movie due for release early next year, it was only a matter of time before a trailer was finaly released.
We've been cautiously optimistic about the movie. Sure, it's a remake of a horror classic but it's not without its merits going in; namely, the new version is written by Mark L. Smith (best known for Vacancy and The Hole, two solid horror movies not to mention co-writing The Revenant (review)) and directed by Kevin and Michael Goetz (of Scenic Route fame). For all of the hype and excitement generated by Joe Dante’s so-called comeback with 2014’s Burying the Ex, the middling comedy horror proved to be a forgettable romp – one which pales in comparison to the director’s body of work. But before you get down and out about Dante’s recent misfortunes, Variety reports that the filmmaker is wasting no time in teeing up his next creative venture: a supernatural thriller known as Labirintus.
Penned by cult screenwriter and novelist Alan Campbell, the director’s latest foray behind the lens will whisk moviegoers off to Budapest, Hungary, following the spine-chilling tale of a paranormal investigator and psychiatric researcher who throw caution to the wind and explore the city’s more treacherous ruins. Settling on what is possibly the creepiest location in the entire country, Variety teases that Labirintus will see the ghost-hunting pair venture into “an abandoned subterranean Soviet research facility,...

Every year as Halloween gets closer, basic cable and the DVD racks at big box stores are flooded with Halloween programming for kids—Disneyfied TV movies and animated specials featuring all their favorite characters in costume. But are these cash-ins any good? If you’re trying to foster a love of horror in your little ones—or just looking for something age-appropriate to show them during October—navigating the seas of “kid-friendly” content can be irritating at best, downright impossible at worst.
Because I both love horror movies and have small children, I have my own picks for what I’ll be showing my kids until they’re of an age for… oh, I don’t know… Cannibal Holocaust. All these choices are subjective and entirely dependent on what different kids can handle.

The Reusable Bughuul: Foy Marks a Franchise for Death
The only thing effectively murdered in the utterly unnecessary and awkwardly bungled sequel to Scott Derrickson’s mostly effective 2012 film Sinister, unrolled with the equally uninspired moniker of Sinister 2, is the material’s once lucrative franchise capabilities. But perhaps Irish helmer Ciaran Foy, taking over for Derrickson, is doing us all a big favor with this perplexingly lethargic follow-up to a film that was already reconstituting elements from a variety of other known genre entities (such as the exposure to vintage cinematic documents necessitating a sort of initiation into the specific paradigm of this particular dark realm a la The Ring).
No longer part of the police force following his involvement with the fiery end greeting the Oswalt family in Sinister, the now Ex-Deputy So & So (James Ransone) is committed to following up on the demonic entity known as Bughuul.

I’m a Joe Dante fan. That is something I cannot hide. His early work made him a horror icon, and Gremlins stands as one of my favorite movies of all time. These are facts, and if I ever get to meet Joe Dante, I’d like nothing more than to buy him a drink and hear him reminisce about the good old days. You know, the exciting, creative times that yielded scene after scene of infectious horror fun.
Basically, any time before Burying The Ex happened.
It’s not that Dante created a soulless romcom disguised as a cheeky horror comedy. It’s more that any voiceless filmmaker could have made Burying The Ex. No scene glistens with Dante’s typically demented polish, and everyone involved seems to be phoning it in. There’s not a single genuine moment of chemistry to be found between the three members of this undead love triangle,...

Ex to Grind: Dante’s ZomCom Never Finds Its Pulse
Zombies are difficult subject matters for the screen. A staple of a popular subgenre, original narrative inspiration is rare in a field of low yield thrills from contemporary films unable to match the iconic masters, like early George Romero. Of course, every now and then, something innovative and exciting comes along, such as Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002), and it’s surprisingly energetic sequel. But increasingly, like all glorious horror tropes, comedy has taken the place of tension. Sometimes, in the right hands, this can also be inviting. So it’s disappointing to see a director like Joe Dante, the man who balanced these elements deftly in classics likes Piranha (1981), Gremlins (1984), and The ‘Burbs (1989) turn up with his latest, Burying the Ex. With its overtly fresh faced young cast and first time script from Alan Trezza (adapted from his own...

Yes, it has been six years since Joe Dante released his last feature film, The Hole; a solid, if not ecstatic film, most notable for its sophisticated and restrained use of 3D technology. Outside of Netflix, very few folks in Canada or the Us got a chance to see The Hole due to poor distribution, so, more or less, it has been about a dozen years since Mr. Dante has had a movie play in the multiplex (Looney Tunes: Back in Action). As much as I quite adore his Trailers from Hell website -- seriously folks, spend your time there, it's great!-- and some occasional TV work, we would really like to see a return to the greatness of his work from the late 1970s through to the early...

Filmmaker Joe Dante is responsible for some of the finest B-movie outings to emerge in the late 70s and early 80s. Pirahna, The Howling and Gremlins now exist as generous reminders of an era where monsters were rendered painstakingly with animatronics and puppetry. More recently, Dante’s devout approach saw him tackle kiddie-centric thriller The Hole, which is in this writer’s opinion vastly underrated. While he’s taken a breather from features to focus on TV (Splatter, Witches Of East End and Hawaii Five-o), the horror helmer returns to his origin genre for Burying The Ex.

There are so many films in development at Blumhouse that it’s hard to keep track of them all. One will stand apart from the pack, however, as it’s being specifically targeted at families. This is a significant departure for the production company behind the Paranormal Activity, Purge, Sinister and Insidious series.
The only information THR have on the film so far is that Robert Ben Garant is writing and Harald Zwart is directing. They have much more kid-friendly experience than Jason Blum and co., thanks to the Night at the Museum films, Cody Banks and the Karate Kid remake.
Garant’s actually been busy at Blumhouse of late, also working on some proper adult-targeted horror fare. I’m not at all surprised; he’s also the author of Writing Movies for Fun and Profit with his co-writer Thomas Lennon and they weren’t joking about the profit part.

Delays hit the reboot of Gremlins, as writer Seth Grahame-Smith admits "I think we just ran out of steam".
Director Joe Dante has long-admitted that he thinks a new Gremlins film is an inevitability.
Dante, who's helmed both the Gremlins films to date, hasn't been involved with a Gremlins 3, nor the talk of a reboot that tends to surface from time to time. And a reboot is currently the thinking for a new Gremlins adventure.
Seth Grahame-Smith, who's also working on Beetlejuice 2, had pitched an idea for a new Gremlins to producer Steven Spielberg and the writer of the original, Chris Columbus. And it seemingly got to the stage where he was working on the project. However, in a new piece at Entertainment Weekly, he concedes that the new Gremlins has burnt out somewhat.

Through his films such as The 'Burbs and Gremlins, director Joe Dante made mischief in American suburbia, Ryan writes...
Mayfield Place is the perfect 80s suburbia. There are painted houses fringed by lush green lawns cut to just the right length, separated by a wide grey road. There are white picket fences. The neighbours are out, tending to their gardens beneath a pristine blue sky.
Thirty-something resident Ray Peterson stands in his front yard, surveys the scene, and sees that it is good.
Except this is a Joe Dante film, and things are never good for long in a Joe Dante film.
Queenie, the little white dog belonging to the old guy across the road, has just left a spire of brown poop on Mark Rumsfield's lawn. Mark, a Vietnam vet and patriot, is running around in his camo shorts, threatening to eviscerate Walter's dog. Elsewhere, Ray's schlubby neighbour Art...

Chicago – When sequels are made, they are rarely better than the original and often have different cast members. “Dolphin Tale 2” defies both of those conventions, and the returning cast delivers the goods – including Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick Jr., and the teenage actors Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff.
Both 17-year-old actors are experienced veterans in show business, and both began when they were eight years old. The first “Dolphin Tale” film was Zuehlsdorff’s debut, and Gamble had his first movie role in the Best Picture Oscar nominated “Babel” in 2006. Zuehlsdorff can also be found on the Disney Channel’s “Mighty Med” TV series, and Gamble had kid roles in “Marley and Me” and “The Dark Knight.”

Last seen on the Venice Lido in 2009 with his acclaimed 3D horror The Hole, Joe Dante returns to the festival with the disappointing schlock fest that is Burying the Ex. All I wanted to bury was my head in my hands during the screening of this tired, cheap and cliché-ridden film.
Our hero is Max (Anton Yelchin), a shop assistant at Boo Mary’s, selling Halloween costumes and horror gimmicks while classic horror movies play on a loop on a TV screen. His girlfriend Evelyn (Ashley Greene) is an eco-blogger who – despite being up for skipping work to have sex with Max when a consignment of naughty nurse costumes arrives – is not actually that much fun.
She hates it when Max’s lothario half-brother Travis (Oliver Cooper) shows up, though to be fair he does have a threesome with a couple of good-time girls on her nice paisley sheet. She...

Getting its premiere out of competition at this year's Venice Film Festival is Joe Dante's Burying The Ex. The zombie rom-com - fast becoming its own sub-subgenre - stars Anton Yelchin, Ashley Greene and Alexandra Daddario, and to herald its undead arrival, a quick clip has just lurched online. It finds Greene suffering a spot of neck trouble. In one of those unfortunate occasional clashes of content Burying The Ex, on paper at least, has exactly the same premise as Life After Beth, which will beat it to release. It involves Greene being killed in a freak accident, but returning from the dead and expecting to carry on her relationship with Yelchin as if nothing is askew. The trouble is, he's already romantically moved on with Daddario.Jeff Baena's Life After Beth has an almost identical love triangle with an undead Aubrey Plaza and a still-living Dane DeHaan and Anna Kendrick.

Based on a short film of the same name, the Alan Trezza-penned script follows Max (Yelchin) and Evelyn (Greene) as their relationship takes a nose dive once they move in together.
Max discovers how controlling and manipulative Evelyn is, but he’s too scared to break up with her. When fate steps in and Evelyn dies in a freak accident, newly-single Max prepares to move on with Olivia (Daddario). His romantic life becomes complicated when Evelyn rises from...

Our collective attention here at Dread Central was most certainly captured earlier this year by the sales trailer for Fear Paris, an anthology of horror tales set to explore the dark underbelly of France's capital.
With three directors already attached, two more have just rounded out the list of contributors, and you'll find all the latest by reading on!
Bloody Disgusting reports that Midnight Meat Train director Ryuhei Kitamura and The Devil Inside's William Brent Bell have both readied their passports for a trip to Paris. They join the previously announced Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Hole), Xavier Gens (Frontier(s), Hitman), and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky).
Fear Paris is described as "genre-bending" with connected stories that will present a Paris unlike anything seen before. Check out the awesome sales trailer below to whet your appetite!
Casting is under way as the film will go into production this summer/fall.

Who could begrudge Joe Dante the honor of an anthology volume dedicated to his work? Here's a director who's never quite gotten his due despite a plethora of appreciative, dedicated fans. Serious American critics, including Jonathan Rosenbaum and Dave Kehr, have stumped for him for decades, but it seems sadly unlikely that such a volume would come out in his home country. In fact, even the Austrian Film Museum press' previous subjects (e.g., Apichatpong, Karmakar, Denis, Assayas) merely emphasize how this looks, superficially at least, like a departure. As an object, of course, the book is beautiful like the other entries in the series.
The co-editors Nil Baskar and Gabe Klinger have brought together a nicely diverse set of accounts of Dante's work. Some are pieces of historicist criticism; others are textual readings of certain tropes or tensions in the movies themselves (e.g. Dušan Rebolj on “Dante's Agents,...

Leonardo DiCaprio signed on to star in "The Revenant," a new thriller that will be directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Babel) and is scheduled to hit theaters in the fall of 2015. DiCaprio will play Hugh Glass, a 19th century fur trapper who gets mauled by a grizzly bear, and then is left for dead by cohorts who rob him. When he survives, he is pissed and sets out on a treacherous journey to exact revenge on those who betrayed him. "The Revenant" is based on novel by Michael Punke. It was adapted by Inarritu and Mark L. Smith (Vacancy, The Hole). Sean Penn has been in talks to play one of the bad guys, but has since dropped out.

Casting the Runes
Director: Joe Dante
Writer: David Tully
Producers: Daniel Tully, Rob Heydon
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Simon Pegg
So Joe Dante’s last film was the underrated 2009 3D film, The Hole, which sadly went direct to DVD even after being well received in Venice and Toronto that year. Now, he’s got a few projects brewing and 2014 will see the release of his film, Burying the Ex starring Anton Yelchin. But the project we are really interested in this project, which looks to be based on the same short story that inspired Jacques Tourneur’s classic 1957 film Night of the Demon, which starred Dana Andrews. While Sam Raimi did a sort of homage to the material already with his 2009 film Drag Me To Hell, Dante’s film seems more of a direct connection. And set to star Simon Pegg!

We've seen horror anthologies in the form of V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, but now the terror is headed overseas in a new series of interconnected horror stories called Fear Paris. The producers behind Paranormal Activity and Insidious have rounded up directors Joe Dante (Gremlins), Xavier Gens (Hitman) and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky) for a collection of stories within the realm of fantasy, horror and sci-fi, all set in "the dark underbelly of the City of Lights." After movies like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death, I’m all for horror anthologies abiding by a particular theme. There’s something inherently fun about such a cornucopia of treats, as different directors populate one single film with so many distinctive styles and traits – as long as the segments set the stage for such fun. I’ll always give a horror anthology a try, from Chillerama to The Theatre Bizarre, which is why I’m happy to say we’ve got an exciting anthology coming our way with Fear Paris.
Newly announced, Fear Paris will join the likes of Joe Dante (Gremlins), Xavier Gens (Hitman/Frontier(s)), and Timo Vuorensola (Iron Sky), as they explore the horrific underworld of France’s iconic capital city. Here’s the full press release, accompanied by a tonal teaser below:

It's always a dicey proposition when a well-known filmmaker "presents" a film they didn't necessarily produce or direct. Usually the "presents" designation is something that occurs long after a film is done, and the producers are able to call in a favor (or throw a few bucks) to someone whose name has a certain degree of film geek credibility. Think of "Quentin Tarantino Presents," for a good example, or perhaps "Wes Craven Presents" for the not-so-good examples. (Nothing against Mr. Craven; I simply prefer the films he actually directs, not "presents.")
Now we can add Joe Dante (director of Piranha, The Howling, Gremlins, The Hole, and many other great flicks) to the list of cool filmmakers who now "present" films that aren't exactly up to their own directorial standards. For some odd reason (possibly because it features his old pal Robert Picardo), Joe Dante Presents Trail of Blood, and let's...

Since his last foray onto the big screen with The Hole in 2009, Joe Dante has been kicking it in TV land, directing episodes of Splatter and Hawaii Five-o. That’s all about to change, however, as this former apprentice of Roger Corman is set to return to cinemas with Burying The Ex.
The forthcoming horror-comedy features a script by newcomer Alan Trezza, who already made his own short film of the story back in 2008. It tells the tale of young couple, Max and Evelyn, whose relationship runs aground when they move in together, and Max discovers an unpleasant, controlling and manipulative side to his partner. While fearfully pondering how best to break up with her, fate intervenes and Evelyn is killed in a freak accident. Problem solved, as far as Max is concerned but, as he tries to move on with new love interest Olivia, Evelyn rises from the dead,...
