Fun one time movie
a-bognar9315 January 2015
A portrait of the life in a small southern town in the USA, Good Intentions is a fun movie, that offers a deep variety of emotions.

As the title suggest our main character Etta just want the best for her family, but ends up failing to do so because she wants to have everything and everybody around her under her control. In the end she learns a valuable lesson about trusting others and giving them the respect and honesty they deserve.

You are probably not going to watch this movie more than once, but the humor, the characters and the atmosphere of the small town will probably be enough for you to make the movie a great experience if only for 84 minutes, it certainly has been for me at least.

Stupid people doing idiotic things?

Always wondering what the point of a movie is. Okay, I'm usually not because usually the movie tells the viewer as the film progresses. Even The Royal Tenenbaums was a movie about a family just being dysfunctional, despite the fact that nothing much happens, it's a great film. Good Intentions, for all its good intentions, was a bit flat. Usually movies are about a family, a relationship, a human psychology and something changes that in a life altering way, or a crime or tragedy that does the same. So, it was unexpected when this movie did none of this. It was really about stupid and poor people continuing to go in over their heads in stupid schemes. So, on the one hand I'm thinking "is that all this is about? seems trite for a movie," while on the other hand I'm thinking "Wow, this film really speaks to me," as I know soooo many people who are poor, scheming, and constantly going in over their heads in stupid schemes. Especially me. Therefore the movie should speak to me more, it just didn't. I was busy trying to figure out if this was a comedy, drama, crime movie, or a ridiculous plot that was based on a true story. Usually when movies come out of left field, it's because they're based on a true story, or else why would they be greenlit. I haven't checked to see yet, but that's what it looked like. When the mother was in the station waggon with her two sons, I was thinking, "Oh no, this movie is about that lady who drowned her two kids by driving them all into the lake," and I braced myself. That would have made sense as to the point of the movie, but nope.

This wacky flick was decent. Elaine Hendrix was so believable as a hot Georgian hick wife that by the end you start only looking at her as a woman who's hot like your girlfriend or wife would be hot. And wow to Leanne Rimes, congrats to her for pulling off the hot sister role, she used to, um, not be cast in that role so that's a huge achievement as she easily fit as Pam. Perry was good in this, did his role well, but it didn't call for him to stand out at all so he just played his part the way he needed to.

The acting all around was good, the story got a bit campy at times, the humor hit the mark 1 out of 3 times, and the pacing was erratic.

For some reason it just played like a made for TV movie based on a true story, but the idea behind the film, that we constantly go in over our heads, is a great message. Just felt that the conclusion wasn't believable until you classify it as a ridiculous comedy, but it wasn't that funny. Hence the weirdness of it all...

Entertainment all around

I love films about southern living. This film is filled with clever humor and wonderful performances by Elaine Hendrix (AKA Etta which is also the name of my grandmother who is from Arkansas ha ha), Leann Rimes, Luke Perry, and The Sheriff (I always forget his name.) Believe me when I say that it is much better than a 4.7. It's not a critics kind of movie. This is a fun, light-hearted film about a small town with quirky characters. Be warned there is a little bit of sexual content, so I wouldn't recommend it for kids unless it has been edited. For an independent film, it is extremely well done. Compared to some of the other romantic comedies at the box office this is worth watching.

Defines Southern

Warning: Spoilers
What a nice surprise! I have been feeling particularly homesick lately! Nostalgic for Dogwoods and things Southern. And, as luck would have it, I stumbled on a movie on Prime to help relieve my condition. It was rated three and a half stars, but I was intrigued. Good Intentions: "Off-beat southern comedy....". Who knows? Could be another "Stars and Bars." So I checked it out. Starred Luke Perry and Elaine Hendrix. And Pam was a surprise...played by LeAnn Rimes, who also sang the theme song. The story was a bit hokey because even the redneck women I know are a lot brighter than Ella. But Luke Perry absolutely nailed redneck guys. Down pat. However, the best thing about this movie was the art production. The symbolism and imagery, including Southern idioms, was very accurate:. Georgia red clay roads, rusted tin roofs, cotton fields, ads for boiled peanuts, ball caps, old pickups, Daisy dukes (complete with dimples), double strap tank tops, etc. And LeAnn to sing the theme song. The story was pretty much a redneck girl story. I think The Bellamy Brothers' song "Redneck Girl" should have been in there somewhere. Basically, the leitmotif of the story was "Redneck girls are hard to handle." "That ain't right," but it might be true! I give it 5 of 5stars just out of nostalgia. On Amazon Prime. Enjoy.
