Eric uses a camera to take a single picture of a bullet. After he does, an exact 3D image of the bullet appears on the computer screen. Multiple photos of the bullet from different angles would have to be taken and a program used to stitch them together into a 3D object.

Calleigh only told him his PO had been killed, not how he had been killed. Dylan would not have known the manner of Andrew Bennett's murder.
