As “The Sopranos” turns 25 years old, its esteemed creator David Chase isn’t exactly celebrating. In a recent interview with The Times UK, Chase proclaimed television’s golden age over and lamented over the changing state of the business. He suggested that today’s TV gatekeepers are no longer interested in the serious-minded fare that Chase broke new ground with “The Sopranos” and that continued over the next 25 years with the likes of “The Wire,” “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and more. Chase called this “a 25-year blip.”
“Yes, this is the 25th anniversary, so of course it’s a celebration,” he said. “But perhaps we shouldn’t look at it like that. Maybe we should look at it like a funeral….We’re going back to where I was. They’re going to have commercials.”
Chase is already correct, as top streamers such as Netflix and Prime Video have introduced ad-supported plans in recent months.

Krysten Ritter has fallen down an all new rabbit hole in the first look at the AMC Networks’ anticipated spinoff, Orphan Black: Echoes.
The network released the minute-and-a-half trailer on Thursday during its panel for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, and sees a disoriented Lucy (portrayed by Ritter) waking up to an unrecognizable near future. The original series is set in the same clone-filled universe as its critically acclaimed and fan-loved BBC America predecessor, Orphan Black, which starred Tatiana Maslany.
“What’s wrong with me?” Ritter’s Lucy can be seen asking. ”Why don’t I know who I am?”
The series is set to explore the scientific manipulation of human existence and will follow a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives while embarking on a journey that will both unravel the mystery of their identity and uncover a story of love and betrayal.

It's hard to believe that the Orphan Black franchise is staging a comeback almost seven years after its series finale.
Thankfully, it looks like Orphan Black: Echoes will fit into the franchise very well.

The promo was unveiled during New York Comic Con on Thursday and showcases Ritter as Lucy, a young woman caught up in what we can only describe as a nightmare.

Over six years after the finale of “Orphan Black,” AMC has returned with a first look at the upcoming spin-off “Orphan Black: Echoes.” The teaser was released as New York Comic Con enters its first day on Thursday.
The teaser shows Krysten Ritter as a dazed Lucy asking a woman, “What’s wrong with me? Why don’t I know who I am?”

One of the most significant acquisitions of the Cannes Film Festival this year was Todd Haynes’ May December, which, just before its NYFF debut later this week, has finally gotten a trailer. The film stars Natalie Portman as an actress staying with the woman (Julianne Moore) that she’s about to play in a movie. The woman in question is a former teacher who had an affair with one of her students and, once she got out of jail, married the now-grown man (played by Charles Melton) in question.

In a sign of Hollywood’s escalating internal tensions, a prominent Directors Guild of America member openly advocated against the election of 10 writer-directors to the guild’s board earlier this month on the grounds that they were “primarily writers” and hailed from “fringe groups.”
In a leaked email that has been shared widely in the creative community, Linda Montanti, chair of the guild’s Western Ad/Upm Council, urged a bloc of DGA voters to not support the board candidacies of a number of multihyphenates who are members of both the DGA and WGA — some of whom have been outspoken about strike issues. The list includes writer-producer Boots Riley, Oscar-winning “Coda” writer-director Sian Heder, actor-filmmaker Justine Bateman, actor-writer Paul Scheer and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin. The unorthodox move prompted DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter to contact the members affected to assure them that Montanti’s move was not condoned by top DGA leaders.

In the spring of 2020, a handful of shows developed to air on the basic cable channel FX instead debuted exclusively on Hulu. It was an attempt to better integrate different parts of the Disney corporate family in the aftermath of Disney acquiring most of Fox’s film and television assets, as well as an acknowledgment that more and more viewers were waiting to watch shows on streaming. Cutting out the legacy media middleman just seemed like a logical next step toward the medium’s future.
It was also, however, extremely confusing.

Since FX moved under the Disney umbrella in 2019, it has sometimes been difficult to find its programming; I’m a professional and I’m often stymied when it comes to which FX shows actually air on FX and which are Hulu exclusives. But FX shows have still felt like FX shows.
The new FX-produced drama Class of ’09 is a puzzlement. One of those Hulu-only offerings, Class of ’09 surely has the air and aura of an FX show, from its sturdy, cinematic production values to a cast topped by FX veterans Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) and Kate Mara (A Teacher) to its creation by writer Tom Rob Smith (The Assassination of Gianni Versace). But what it feels like? Well, it feels like a broadcast TV show from a decade ago — specifically like ABC’s Quantico, a drama remembered largely by Priyanka Chopra Jonas devotees.

Apple TV+ unveiled the first teaser trailer for the upcoming drama series “Lessons in Chemistry,” produced by and starring Academy Award-winner Brie Larson.
Adapted from the fictional, best-selling debut novel by author, science editor and copywriter Bonnie Garmus, the show will debut on the streamer this coming fall.
“You’re one of the smartest people in this lab,” Lewis Pullman’s character says to Larson’s Elizabeth Zott in the beginning of the trailer.
“Lessons in Chemistry” follows the story of Zott (played by Larson), whose dream of being a scientist hits hurdles in a patriarchal society when she becomes pregnant and gets fired from her lab. She accepts a job as a host on a TV cooking show, and sets out to teach a nation of overlooked housewives – and the men who are suddenly listening – a lot more than recipes.

The Sopranos creator David Chase has lined up his next project — and it’s not for HBO, the home of his seminal drama and with whose parent company he has a first-look deal.
Instead, Chase is teaming with the Disney-backed FX for a previously unproduced drama of his that sources describe as being about the witness protection program.
Chase is in the second of a five-year, first-look deal with Warner Bros. Discovery. The pact gives HBO and HBO Max first rights to anything that their treasured showrunner wants to do. Given the agreement and Chase’s long and celebrated history with HBO, it begs the question of why the premium cable network/streamer and even Warner Bros. Television aren’t connected at all with the new (er, recycled) Chase project?
Sources say HBO/HBO Max passed on Chase’s drama, which is definitely not the 2009 miniseries A Ribbon of Dreams...

After creating one of the greatest TV shows of all time, with HBO’s “The Sopranos,” you’d think David Chase would have turned that into a golden ticket to make years and years of whatever TV shows or films he wanted. Netflix’s cautionary sci-fi anthology series “Black Mirror” hasn’t aired new episodes since 2019, but with a new cast on board, it looks as if the show’s highly awaited sixth season is finally moving forward.
Aaron Paul, Zazie Beetz, Josh Hartnett, Kata Mara, Paapa Essiedu, Danny Ramirez, Clara Rugaard (“Press Play”), Auden Thornton (“Palm Trees and Power Lines”) and Anjana Vasan (“Killing Eve”) have joined Season 6, Variety reports. Netflix had no comment.
These actors will reportedly appear throughout three episodes, with some signing on for additional episodes. Hardcore fans may remember that Paul lent his voice to Season 4’s “U.S.S. Callister” in a brief vocal cameo, and it’s been rumored that that episode might be getting a sequel spinoff of sorts, though that remains unconfirmed.
