Good News Everybody!
Comedy Central has been very generous with the Futurama tidbits. They have been posting a new sketch, scene, character design or plot detail every day, as a lead in to the triumphant return of Futurama.
Unfamiliar with Futurama? Here is what you need to know. Futurama is the other show by The Simpsons' creator Matt Groening. The show centers on Philip J. Fry, a 20th century pizza delivery boy that accidentally gets frozen for 1000 years. He awakens in New New York, a future inhabited by robots, aliens, mutants from below the surface and animated heads in jars (including the Earthican President Richard Nixon). Fry finds himself what family he had, in a withered and aged scientist-cum-entrepreneur Professor Hubert Farnsworth, who beyond inventing such world changing devices as the smell-o-scope and the first robot to qualify for a boat loan, owns and operates Planet Express, an intergalactic package delivery service.

Jason Manford, Oliver Postgate and a whole lot of movies lead this week's TV round-up...
Geek Week TV: saving clicking finger tendons and remote batteries since 2009
In the run up to what's proving to be an Easter TV week to remember, there's a couple of promising shows to enjoy now, before the sugar shock sets in and the geeklets near you start bouncing off all available surfaces.
Comedy Rocks With Jason Manford airs tonight, Friday March 26th at 9:00pm on ITV1. It's billed as a variety show, but don't let that scare you off as the scales seem heavily tipped in the comedic direction with standup comic John Bishop and Jo Brand lined up alongside the music and other acts. We're quite happy to spend time with Mr Manford outside of his 8 Out Of 10 Cats team captain duties and are booking our spot on the settee early.
Then on Wednesday,...

Last year we learned the Comedy Central has been looking to develop new "Futurama" episodes and begin airing them in 2010. But then came news that most of the voice actors would be replaced in order to save some money. Everything ended up working out and it has already been confirmed that Billy West (Philip Fry), John Dimaggio (Bender) and Katey Sagal (Leela) will all be returning. And Comedy Central has now revealed that the first episode will air on Thursday, June 24th at 10pm. "Futurama" launched in 1999 on Fox and aired through 2003. Adult Swim and then Comedy Central kept the show alive in repeats, with Comedy Central giving a home to the "Futurama" movie "Bender's Big Score," "The Beast with a Billion Backs," "Bender's Game" and "Into the Wild Green Yonder." Ratings for the reruns, as well as DVD sales, helped to spur talk of a comeback. "Futurama" has a...

Fox has announced Futurama: Into the Wild Green Yonder, the fourth feature-length adventure of the popular animated series, will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray February 24. In the all-new Futurama extravaganza, mankind stands on the brink of a wondrous new Green Age. But ancient forces of darkness, three years older than time itself, have returned to wreak destruction. Even more shocking: Bender's in love with a married fembot, Leela's on the run from the law and Fry is the last hope for the universe. Could this be the end of the Planet Express crew forever? Joining the saga this time as guest stars are illusionist Penn Jillette, hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, talk radio superstar Phil Hendrie, and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. In addition, fans of the series will be thrilled and relieved to finally discover the truth about “Number 9 Man,” a deeply mysterious character from the earliest days of the series.

Note: No one wanted this movie to be great more than myself. With that said... Fearfully I say unto thee, Futurama Faithful: the series has taken another hit. That’s not to say “Bender’s Game is a hit!” but rather the third installment of direct-to-dvd movies leaves Futurama fans unfulfilled. Now, for those of you who sat through Beast with a Billion Backs biting back bitter, beleaguered bellows of disappointment – you might think Bender’s Game takes the series back in a better direction. And you might be right but that doesn’t solve the very low volume of laughs to be found here. I’ve found that Beast with a Billion Backs, though initially disappointing, gets better with age and I can only hope the same is true of Bender’s Game. The price of dark matter has reached an all-time high in the year 3000 and after a...

Futurama has never been afraid to delve into the big, playfully philosophical ideas endemic to brainy science fiction. So when it was announced that the beloved cult show would be returning as a series of feature-length DVD movies, fans were exhilarated that the show's geek squad would finally have the space to do justice to its big ideas and ambitious premises. But there's such a thing as too much freedom, and the direct-to-dvd features Bender's Big Score and The Beast With A Billion Backs regularly veer into winking self-indulgence. So it isn't an encouraging sign that the third Futurama DVD, Bender's Game, is an extended love letter to Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord Of The Rings. Though D&D+Futurama is an equation sure to inspire geekgasms throughout the role-playing community, fans who've never known the joy of rolling the 20-sided die are bound to feel a little left out.

The big-screen remake of Get Smart, starring Office funnyman Steve Carell in the role of comically inept secret agent Maxwell Smart, leads this week's batch of new DVD releases*. Also debuting today on DVD: Machinist director Brad Anderson's indie thriller Transsiberian, starring Woody Harrelson and Ben Kingsley; the animated holiday special Shrek the Halls; the straight-to-dvd animated comedy Futurama: Bender's Game ; and yet another completely unnecessary pair of Star Wars box sets.
(*This week's other major release, the Dreamworks animated hit Kung Fu Panda, arrives on DVD Sunday, November 9. More on that later.)

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Man, this week seems almost bigger than it actually is due to the myriad of ways each of these releases occurs. The Planet of the Apes Blu-ray release can be purchased as a collection or individually, Kung Fu Panda can be purchased individually or with the Secrets of the Furious Five, the Get Smart movie is out and you can also purchase the complete TV series set, Shrek the Halls can be bought on DVD as well as options with toys, the Star Wars trilogies are being released again and A Christmas Story now comes to Blu-ray. On top of all that I have added several upcoming Fox catalog Blu-ray releases, which are listed at the end of this report. Planet of the Apes on Blu-ray I just reviewed the single disc Blu-ray edition of the 1968 film that started this massive franchise,...

Like most of you, I loved Futurama during its all-too-brief run on the Fox Network and cherished those DVD box sets and 11pm Adult Swim airings. And like most of you, I was pleased to hear that the show was coming back as a series of direct-to-dvd movies featuring the original cast and most of the original writers, including Matt Groening. But now, I am thrilled to tell you that the Alamo Ritz will be screening the new Futurama movie, Bender's Game, this Monday, October 27, at 7pm... for free! This is a one-time only screening, and you'll get to see it one full week before it comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 4. That's 8 days of bragging rights!

On the heels of The Beast with a Billion Backs comes the third installment of the four Futurama direct-to-dvd films in Bender's Game. It's difficult to take these movies in as "movies" because they all feel like three or four episodes strung together (in fact, that is how they will be released on Comedy Central later this year) but they all seem to have a central storyline or element that runs through the entire feature and ties everything up in the end. For this film, that element is the Dungeons and Dragons.
The film starts off as the younger of the Planet Express staff (Cubert, Dwight and friends) are geeking out in a game of D&D and acknowledge that Bender was built without an imagination (really?). This comes back later on in the film for a bit of a Wizard of Oz-like twist in which the whole crew gets sucked into Bender's imagination.
