An excellent ep
MiketheWhistle9 December 2019
This was a truly exceptional ep, but not just as part of the series but in general. It had suspense, drama, great acting, but I will say the twist at the end I saw right away. Truly adds to the series.

Perfect for the Borg Queen...
umustbekidn21 November 2022
Annie also plays the Borg Queen in star trek: Picard.

She has a real talent for playing roles that include intelligent psychopaths.

I personally enjoy the actors from other series being included in Rookie (Alan Tudyk was in a prior episode).

There are a lot of crime drama shows, but most don't appeal to me. Rookie does... And not just because a few of my favorite actors are in it. Rookie has a lot more humanity in it. The presence of Nathan Fillion got me to watch, but the cast as a whole has kept me watching. I'm actually re-watching the entire series now...

Great job, Nathan!

Keep up the great work, folks!

Good to see them mix it up

Good episode for a change of pace even if its a recycled story. If you don't like fiction go watch a documentary. I love fiction so this episode was awesome to me.

Amazing episode. But unoriginal writing.

Warning: Spoilers
Seriously. The episode was AMAZING. They did something different to switch it up, but the ending was just stupid.

"O hey.. I finally talked to a random guy... Sadly the only random guy in the entire bar I just talked to was a bad guy".

I don't post many reviews but this episode is very simple and lacks creativity. Typical Hollywood 9 to 5 writing.

The Best Episode of The Rookie So Far!
SourCandyOrNoCandy6 April 2022
Whew suchhh a good episode! The story was excellent, the characters were great and the writing was incredible. Rosalind was the complete opposite of the typical serial killer in crime shows and I loved it.

In my head, the ADA is the serial killer's apprentice. I don't know where that thought came from and there's no evidence to back it up, but as soon as we found out that there was another body at the dump site, my mind went to him.

Sergeant Hernandez is my favourite side characters from this episode. That actor played his role so well.

I was so excited that they gave Chen a love interest only to have that insane cliffhanger at the end. I'm so excited to watch the next episode! It was really funny seeing Bradford's reaction to Caleb. Those looks between him and Chen when Caleb turned up at the station? I ate that scene upppp.

Best part of the episode? Everything. The main plot and the side plots were so interesting. Loved everything single moment.

Worst part of the episode? I watched this episode twice back-to-back to find something I didn't like but I couldn't.

The Notorious Serial-Killer
claudio_carvalho23 October 2021
While drinking in a bar with her friends and fellow officers, Chen sees a man robbing and arrests him. She impresses a young and handsome man called Caleb Wright that visits her on the Police Department on the next morning. Soon all the department has a meeting with ADA Sean Delmonte that explains that the serial-killer Rosalind Dyer that is in the death row has made a deal to show three buried victims; in return, her sentence changes to life prison. Sgt. Grey and Detective Nick Armstrong advise the team to do not let Rosalind affect their minds. Nick, who arrested her, has deep traumas in his past caused by Rosalind. When they locate the two fist bodies, they find a second fresher corpse tattooed with the day of death indicating that Rosalind has a disciple that worships her. The period between the deaths is three months and on the next day it will complete another period. Now the police department is looking for leads to save the third new victim.

"The Dark Side" is certainly the best episode of "The Rookie" so far. The storyline is very well written and acted, with maginificent performance of Annie Wersching. The cliffhanger in the end is breathless. My vote is nine.

Finally, an archenemy?

Warning: Spoilers
Love this series more and more. And finally, a case that spans more than 1 episode. Just my opinion for the last scenes. I think it'd better if it show Lucy and Caleb first until he opens the trunk. Switch to reveal the news about Coleman's body. Then end with Caleb closing the trunk. Is Nurse McClintock gonna be the new 3XK?

Silence of the Bosch
meberaz10 December 2019
I want to like this series, but I am about to give up and delete it from my DVR's record settings. I understand that it is necessary, when writing fiction, to keep the situations intense. And by doing so, most situations will not reflect realities or possibilities. So we must suspend our disbelief and allow our imaginations to enjoy a thrill ride. That being said, this episode was completely ridiculous, far fetched and derivative. Heck, the dude''s a "rookie" cop and on a special assignment with a female Hannibal Lecter. Plus, the whole narrative is similar to a Bosch episode. This series started out as a story about a mid-forties-man reinventing himself as a LAPD officer, and all the emotions, struggles, challenges and triumphs he encountered as he patrolled the mean streets of Los Angeles. Although I loved the missile scare episode, I really would love to see this series move back to the original story-lines involving the "rookies'" encounters with the citizens of the once great city of Los Angeles.

Cliched. A waste of the actors' talents.
erictaysom9 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A serial killer, yawn. A serial killer is a conscienceless sadist who has planned the whole thing from the beginning to people around, blah. A side character is actually working with the killer and now one of the regular cast has been kidnapped, boring.

I didn't care for this setup when it was new, but every crime show feels compelled run through the same worn out scenario. The crew of the show put the episode together with their usual competence and we ended up with... mediocrity. Seriously, writers need to just ax this type of episode from their handbooks for a decade or two.

This show is at its' best when it isn't doing the terrorist, or the serial killer, or what ever other over the top idea they try to make things more exciting. This is a show about ordinary rookies, let it be about them. Tell stories about the sort of problems regular cops, through the lens of people who've never had to deal with them before.

WHO chose the music for this episode?!?!
secoons12 December 2019
This was a typical ABC cop show episode. Unbelievable, cliche storyline, but unlike some reviewers that doesn't upset me. Sure, a little boring, but expected for this kind of show so I was kept entertained enough. And to be fair, I didn't expect the ending to go exactly the way it did, so cheers. What really made me almost stop watching was THE MUSIC. The two songs in this episode were so awful I almost didn't get through the scenes they were featured in - the audio was so bad I had a hard time hearing the words and the style so distracting it was impossible to pay attention to what the actors were saying. Nails on a chalkboard? Exactly. I literally don't know what was said in certain scenes because all I could hear was the music. I rarely review on IMDb but I just had to this time because this was probably the worst I've ever heard in any TV show.

How to Ruin a Show With One Episode
qtfetan25 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the show so far and I didn't had any problems with the previous episodes but this one ruined the whole show. We have the classic "Moriarty" serial killer cliche, with no original trait whatsoever (the I'm a mastermind but also am savage and brag about it killer). Moreover, we get the "the killer was the new boyfriend and kidnaps one of the main characters so we can rescue?!?" cliche which I wouldn't expect that if all the police shows didn't do the exactly same thing. It's a skip for me.

I watch this series to relax and so far I more or less enjoyed the plot and the cast and I think they should stick to rookie stuff, which is entertaining enough. Unfortunately, in this episode, they go down the well-trodden path of the "brilliant serial killer", with the inevitable twist that the killer is female!

Wow! Really wasn't expecting that (eye rolls) ... to compound the felony, serial killer Rosalind is very attractive and well-groomed, with perfectly dyed hair - not the look of someone who spent five years in maximum security -, she's smug, arrogant and a mind reader, a sort of a bad copy of Lecter, inclusive of secret admirer working from the outside (yes, it's the Tooth Fairy plot, only with rookies mixed in).

So we're fed the inevitable silly dialogues with Rosalind outsmarting everyone and the LAPD looking like a bunch of idiots... and it's not over yet, even the cliffhanger ending is so entirely predictable that I informed my husband about what was going to happen five minutes earlier and inevitably it did. So much for piling up tropes and clichés.

More Like "The Dim Side"
SaintFu27 September 2022
Love the show, but honestly, the serial killer actress is a huge yawn. She works way too hard to sound and act scary and crazy, but just doesn't pull it off. There's no aura of menace or real power from her performance, unfortunately. Sure, the acts her character committed are atrocities, but her character's attitude is more like "look what I did! I'm so naughty!" With the connection/timing of later murders, the murderess feels like an homage to Kevin Spacey in Se7en, but feels like a sad tribute band.

Still a 5/10 because the cast delivers its usual strong performances and the writing is good.

Exclusively huge bag full of clichés
kofila29 February 2024
Wow... Worst episode yet. Each time there was some kind of revelation I had to roll my eyes. Everything you can think off in a serial killer episode of a procedural but in such huge amount of improbability at the same time. Not much of it makes sense and the acting doesn't help for sure. And to help that the writers had this awesome idea. Let's take a Hanibal Lecter and make him a nice and kinda hot lady! Oooooo! Spicy! And then use the ever unused lines such as: "she's been a step ahead of us the whole time" or "don't let her get inside your head" 😂 Oh boy.. For real? Come on Rookie... You can do better than that!
