American Jew Jake Adelstein works as English teacher in Tokyo and takes a sincere interest in Japanese culture. He becomes the first foreigner to s-pass for the most popular newspaper Meicho Shimbun's feared journalist entrance exam. Jake is hired. but openly seen an undesirable outsider by many colleagues and frustrated that at his obligatory first department, crime articles, Japanese media only report -mainly verbatim- what the police officially states, which clearly isn't the whole story, but he's forbidden even to look for that. Still Jake digs further in his spare time, even pays a police detective to teach him the ropes. Thus he finds out about manipulative Yakuza murders, notably forcing debtors to public suicide to spare the loved-ones worse.
