Quotes

  • [last lines]

Kang In-goo : Why me...? Why me?

  • [Hee-soo comes into the apartment and wanders into her room. In-goo is sitting, drunk and despondent, on the couch. He can't believe that his daughter actually wants him to die]

Kang Hee-soo : Did you go through my room?

    [In-goo says nothing]

Kang Hee-soo : How dare you? I can't believe you. Why'd you go through my room?

Kang In-goo : Do you... want me to die?

Kang Hee-soo : What? You read my diary?

    [In-goo sighs guiltily]

Kang Hee-soo : Fine, I guess you know. Yeah, I hope you die. I want you gone!

[In-goo hurls his beer can to the floor and lumbers to the refrigerator]

Kang In-goo : [slurred]  Hee-soo... You want your dad to die...

Kang Hee-soo : Where are you going?

[In-goo looks, dazed, around the kitchen, for the knife drawer]

    Kang In-goo : Then I should die.

    Kang Hee-soo : Don't you dare!

[In-goo rummages around for a knife and picks one out]

Kang In-goo : Rather than getting stabbed by some punk... It's better to get stabbed by my daughter. I'd be happier that way. Here, kill me.

[Hee-soo turns and flees into her bedroom]

Kang In-goo : Hee-soo! You said you wanted me dead!

Kang Hee-soo : [on the phone]  Mom... pick up...

  • [Fleeing into the countryside, In-goo's already smashed car breaks down. In-goo limps out to inspect the damage. Then he limps over to the boot. It's even more crushed than the bonnet. He sees something dripping out of the boot. It gradually dawns on him that it's blood, and that Sang-jin is wounded. In-goo tugs at the boot but it's stuck tight]

    Kang In-goo : Sang-jin!

[He thumps on the boot and kicks it, and kicks it again. It won't open. He tries pulling again and calls to Sang-jin who's locked inside]

    Kang In-goo : Come on, man! Sang-jin!

[He finally kicks open the boot. Sang-jin is inside, a bloody, bandaged mess. His eyes are closed. In-goo grabs him by the shirt and shakes him]

    Kang In-goo : Sang-jin! Sang-jin!

[He tries beating at Sang-jin's chest to give him CPR]

Kang In-goo : Get up, man! Sang-jin! You bastard! Get up! Sang-jin! Please! No! Get up! Don't do this to me! Sang-jin!

[It's no use. Sang-jin's dead. And the boss' car is coming up the road. In-goo quietly panics. Nervously, he closes the boot, as the car pulls up beside In-goo's. The boss gets out]

    Director Noh : In-goo?

Kang In-goo : [nervously]  Yes, boss?

Director Noh : Are you okay? I know about Sang-jin. Forgive him. It's all over now.

Kang In-goo : I turned left, and there were too many cars... I had no choice but to go over to the other lane... I didn't mean it, boss. I can explain... M-my bumper got smashed in... There was a traffic jam, and...

[Noh wrestles In-goo out of the way, opens the boot and sees the corpse of Sang-jin inside. In-goo starts to cry]

Kang In-goo : Let me explain, boss. Please, boss... It wasn't my fault...

  • Kang In-goo : Look, Sang-jin, I've had enough, man. You can't ask for anything. You didn't do a thing. I sold fruit for four years, man. Let's just drop it.

  • Kang In-goo : What else do you want me to say? Yeah, I'm a gangster. You knew that. Did you marry me thinking I worked at some big company? You lived off the money I made from the gang. All those years, you were okay with it. But now you want a divorce?

Mi-ryung : You didn't let me work, to take care of the kids. I never once felt right about spending the money you brought home.

Kang In-goo : Suddenly turned saint... But still, you can't do this to me, hon. Not you. You know how I lived all those years. Shit, you can't do this to me, hon.
