Rome, 1940. The single mother Ida Ramundo is Jewish, but keeps it hidden for fear of being deported. In January 1941, her life is turned upside down. A German soldier rapes her. Ida is tormented and ashamed. She discovers that she is pregnant and one day gives birth to an infant with beautiful blue eyes.

Ida's son Nino asks no questions and instantly falls in love with his little brother. But despite that, Nino leaves his family. He is a convinced fascist and joins the army as a volunteer. Ida is alone with her little son, who is nicknamed Useppe. But soon the war turns everyone's lives upside down.

Ida has lost everything and must flee. During the escape, she meets the craftsman and communist Cucchiarelli. For Useppe, the escape is an adventure and he loves Cucchiarelli. Nino reappears. Now he has become a freedom fighter, and he persuades Cucchiarelli to join the armed struggle.
