- Maria is shocked to meet thirteen year old Sarah Jane Smith, and puts together that the second girl must be Andrea Yates. She finds a newspaper and realizes that it is the day of the lethal accident, the last place in time the Graske must have been. She warns the girls not to go near the pier, but Andrea convinces Sarah Jane to ignore her. When they leave, the Graske finds Maria and teleports her away. He takes her to an empty white plane and leaves her, though she is found by the grown-up Sarah Jane, who tells her they are trapped in limbo.
At the Jackson house, Alan tries to remind Chrissie about Maria, but she is adamant that there is no such person. Once again the photos have changed so it shows only Alan moving into the house alone, and all of Maria's things have disappeared. Alan puts together it must have been the puzzle box, and decides Maria must have been right about Sarah Jane. Sarah tells Maria about the school trip when her best friend Andrea died. They had slipped away from the group and gone onto a closed pier for fun, but Andrea fell over the edge. Sarah Jane tried to save her but was too late. In this new version of reality, their places were switched so that Sarah Jane fell, and Andrea lived a full life. The puzzle box was given to Sarah Jane because the alien soothsayer foresaw this situation. She tells Maria that the Graske himself was not behind this, and just then a voice summons Sarah Jane. She goes to see the hooded figure, the Trickster, who claims to be an agent of disorder. He found a way to remove Sarah Jane just in time for the meteor to destroy earth, and sent away all of the hostile aliens that Sarah Jane stopped in the past, saying that the meteor destroying earth for no other reason than blind chance will cause the most chaos. Sarah Jane demands to see Luke, but the Trickster says that since in this reality the Bane never invaded and never created him, he never existed in the first place and is lost in an even deeper void than she is. He tells her that Andrea made an agreement with him to trade Sarah Jane's future for her own. He leaves to oversee the destruction of the planet, planning to return and use Sarah Jane's memories to find the Doctor. Without the Doctor, the entire universe will fall to chaos.
At number 13, Andrea is enjoying a lively party with her many friends, as well as Clyde, Chrissie, and Alan. Alan is now extremely suspicious of Andrea, and privately confronts her about Maria and Sarah Jane. Andrea gives him the whole story about what happened at the pier that day. When she was trying to hang on, the Trickster spoke to her, offering to save her in exchange for Sarah Jane. The terrified girl agreed, and Sarah Jane fell and died instead. The Trickster made her forget the deal she's made, and Alan asks why she sent away Maria. Andrea says she could not bare to remember, and the Trickster asks if she wants him to remove Alan as well. Andrea agrees, and takes his puzzle box as the Graske appears. Alan makes a run for it, passing a confused Chrissie on the way out. In the living room, the party has stopped and everyone is watching the news, as the meteor is now very close to earth, and all efforts to stop it have failed. Alan tackles the Graske and ties him up, making him return Maria. As she comes back, Chrissie remembers her, and Andrea realizes that Maria said that Sarah Jane is the only one who can save the earth from the meteor. Alan tries using the Graske's device to return Sarah Jane as well, and they go the attic to see if it worked while the Graske frees himself and escapes. Outside, the meteor is now visible and coming closer and closer to striking the earth.
Andrea goes to the attic and finds Sarah Jane in the mirror. She cannot return while Andrea is still there. Maria and Alan arrive and Maria tells Andrea the Trickster used her to cause the end of the world. The only way to stop it is for Andrea to back out of her deal with him, and trade back her life for Sarah Jane's. Andrea grows angry, saying she lived her life to the fullest after what happened, and does not want to be forgotten. Sarah Jane tells her she never forgot her. Seeing her friend die made her value life all the more, and drove her to protect it her entire life. She pleads with Andrea to give her son the chance to live, and save the earth by taking back her agreement. The Trickster appears and tries to convince her not to, but Andrea decides she can use her life for something good, and takes back the deal. In the 1960s, Andrea dies, asking Sarah Jane to remember her.
In the present, Sarah Jane and Luke appear in the restored attic with Alan and Maria, though the meteor is still coming. They activate Mr. Smith and safely redirect the meteor away from earth right before it makes impact. Sarah Jane reunites with Maria and Luke, who has no memory of the recent events, and Clyde joins them. The realize Alan is now in on the secret, and he demands an explanation.
