Dua Lipa‘s third studio album has arrived!
Radical Optimism is packed with hits like “Illusion,” “Training Season,” and “Houdini,” as well as eight more tracks.
“I wrote this album during my singledom,” Dua said in a statement. “I always came into the studio with some funny story, and they all inspired different songs. There’s a looseness and an honesty that I hadn’t had before.”
Dua describes Radical Optimism as “psychedelic pop” noting that “there are musical breaks and a mix of different sounds, and when you listen to it with your eyes closed, it opens up a very visual world.”
You can catch Dua performing her new songs on Saturday Night Live when she pulls double duty as host and musical guest on Saturday, May 4.

Dua Lipa has announced her third studio album, Radical Optimism, out May 3rd.
Radical Optimism consists of 11 tracks, featuring the previously released singles “Houdini” and “Training Season.” Lipa’s core team for the project includes longtime collaborator Caroline Ailin, Danny L Harle, Tobias Jesso Jr., and Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker.
In a press statement, Lipa explained the inspiration behind the album’s title and concept. “A couple years ago, a friend introduced me to the term Radical Optimism. It’s a concept that resonated with me, and I became more curious as I started to play with it and weave it into my life,” she said. “It struck me — the idea of going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm.”
Lipa continued, “At the same time, I found myself looking through the music history of psychedelia, trip hop, and Britpop. It has always felt so confidently optimistic to me,...

Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures has entered production on Hedda, its reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler, announcing the addition of six to its cast. Newcomers include Imogen Poots (Baltimore), Tom Bateman (Thirteen Lives), Finbar Lynch (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), Mirren Mack (The Witcher: Blood Origins), Jamael Westman (Hamilton), and Saffron Hocking (Top Boy).
The actors join an ensemble that also includes Tessa Thompson, Nina Hoss, and Nicholas Pinnock, as previously announced.
Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler revolves around Hedda Tesman, a newlywed stifled by societal norms. Frustrated and trapped, she resorts to manipulation and destructive actions. As secrets unravel, the play explores themes of power, gender roles, and the tragic consequences of societal expectations in the late 19th century.
Directing from her own script is Nia DaCosta, the filmmaker behind Uni’s newest Candyman horror pic and the acclaimed crime drama Little Woods. Producers include Plan B,...

In 2008, the writer-director Azazel Jacobs made a small but vivid splash with “Momma’s Man,” a Sundance comedy about a troubled dweeb hiding out in the cocoon of his parents’ downtown Manhattan apartment. The parents were played by Jacobs’ own (the avant-garde filmmaker Ken Jacobs and his wife Flo), and the movie turned their overstuffed bohemian pack-rat museum of a loft into a tiny city of its own. “Momma’s Man” showed extraordinary promise, and in the 15 years since I’ve been waiting for Azazel Jacobs to make good on it. But while he has given us a compelling movie or two, they have all felt minor, and his last feature, “French Exit,” though it generated Oscar buzz for Michelle Pfeiffer, was equal parts charming and contrived.
Now, though, the angels have smiled. Jacobs has taken the leap I always wanted him to make and become a filmmaker of effortless and moving assurance.

Wyoming is headed to West End. Brokeback Mountain — Annie Proulx’s short story made popular by the 2005 film — is getting a stage adaptation set to premiere in London, starring Lucas Hedges and Mike Faist as closeted cowboys Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. It marks both actors’ West End debuts.
Variety reports that the West End adaptation of Brokeback Mountain is slated to premiere at the venue @sohoplace, and will play from May 10th through August 12th, 2023. Although there’s no Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger in this go around, Proulx said in a statement that the “script is fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments,” which seems like a promising co-sign.
The play Brokeback Mountain was written by Ashley Robinson, with songs by Dan Gillespie Sells. Jonathan Butterell directs, and it’s produced by Nica Burns with Adam Blanshay Productions, Lambert Jackson Productions...

Michelle behind the scenes of her THR photoshoot (from her Instagram acct)
Though we've been obsessed with Michelle Pfeiffer for our whole lives we haven't had much occassion to revel in that love given her infrequent appearances on screens in the past two decadess. At last, with her kids in their 20s and her unisex fragrance line Henry Rose fully established and successful, she finally appears to be ready to act frequently again. French Exit (2020) was an excellent warm up to return to leading lady status and she's absolutely acing the great role of the influential Betty Ford in The First Lady (2022) and receiving 'best-in-show' raves for her work. We're crossing our fingers for an Emmy nod.

Most U.K. sales agents sent slimmed-down teams — or none at all — to Cannes this year, but Rocket Science CEO Thorsten Schumacher had no qualms about getting back to business as usual on the Croisette.
Rocket Science has two films in the festival: Sean Penn-directed competition title “Flag Day” and Eva Husson’s “Mothering Sunday,” starring Josh O’Connor and Odessa Young. The sales firm is also shopping one of the buzziest titles at the Pre-Cannes Screenings: Todd Haynes’ “May December.”
“As a business decision, it obviously would have been easier and cheaper to do it on Zoom, but I thought it was [important] for us as a company to project that we’re at the forefront of reopening that door and going back out and supporting the festival,” says Schumacher, a former managing director of HanWay Films. Just about the only irony to be found in Paul Weitz’s earnest and tender “Fatherhood” is that its story, about a single father’s extraordinary efforts to overcome his immaturity and selfishness to raise an infant after his wife’s death, plays so effortlessly on screen.
“Fatherhood” may offer pleasing platitudes and uncomplicated life lessons about trying hard, being present, and the healing power of love, but at least the film eschews cloying contrivances on its journey to big smiles and feel-good hugs.
Father-to-be Matt (Kevin Hart) is a well-intentioned and affable man whose tenuous grasp on responsibility doesn’t quite extend far enough to build the crib in time for the birth of his daughter, Maddy. When Matt’s wife, Liz, unexpectedly dies of a pulmonary embolism barely a day after giving birth, Matt has to quickly and simultaneously navigate the exhausting paths of grieving husband and single parent.

There are countless different coming-of-age movies about kids who learn to blaze their own trail and become the best possible version of themselves, but “North Hollywood” is one of the rare few that actually embodies the courage of its convictions both on-screen and off. On second thought, make that less on-screen than off.

Liam Neeson thriller “The Marksman” defied pandemic norms with a three-month theatrical window. Five months after its release, it’s now available to rent at the standard-price $5.99 after a late-April Premium VOD debut. It claimed the #1 spot on all charts calculated after the mid-week shift. That includes FandangoNow, which ranks entries by the revenue accrued. That means it had more than triple the number of rentals as their #2 title, “Nobody,” which still costs $19.99.
VOD platforms otherwise saw ongoing success for familiar films, including “The Little Things.” The Denzel Washington action title was #1 at Spectrum, which as usual lags in reporting.
Noteworthy this week is the debut of three fresh titles, two of which are recent releases that went directly to standard pricing and saw immediate interest. “Together Together,” a comedy starring Patti Harrison and Ed Helms, and “French Exit” both saw traction. However, the real breakout is “North Hollywood,” apparently...

As coronavirus cases continue to decline across the U.S. and President Joe Biden vows to disperse 200 million more Covid-19 vaccine doses by his 100th day in office, Hollywood is inching closer to reopening.
Entertainment is among the industries most crippled by the pandemic. Nationwide lockdowns forced the shutdowns of television and film productions, delayed movie premieres, shifted release strategies and closed movie theaters.
California is set to fully reopen its economy on June 15 if vaccinations remain widely available and hospitalizations continue to stabilize. It will relinquish the four-tiered, color-coded system that has guided the state’s reopening process during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, California allows indoor concerts, theater performances and other gatherings as of April 15. Attendees have to either show a negative Covid-19 test result or proof of full vaccination. Three counties in northern California can hold concerts and other indoor events at 75% of capacity.

Spirit Awards 2021 Winners List: ‘Nomadland,’ ‘I May Destroy You,’ Riz Ahmed, Carey Mulligan Win Big
“Mank” is the big leader at the 2021 Oscars with 10 nominations, but that wasn’t the case at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The nomination leader at this ceremony was Eliza Hittman’s acclaimed “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which the Academy shut out from the Oscars. The same goes for other beloved Spirit Award nominees like “First Cow,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “The Assistant.” In other words, the Indie Spirit Awards were a breath of fresh air in this elongated awards season where underdog indie contenders finally get their due in the spotlight.
“Minari” also preformed strong at the Indie Spirits, earning six nominations to match its six Oscar nominations. Fellow Oscar nominees “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Nomadland” each picked up five Spirit Award nominations. Netflix was the most nominated studio with 16 nominations, followed by Focus Features with 10 and A24 with 9.

The 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards are set to take place this week as a welcome reprieve to this elongated Oscar season. Unlike the Academy Awards, where David Fincher’s “Mank” reigns supreme with 10 nominations, the 2021 Indie Spirit Awards are dominated by Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which was shut out of the Oscar nominations. “Never Rarely” boasts seven Spirit Award nominations this year, including Best Feature and Best Director.
Unlike the Oscars, the Spirit Awards also boast a Best First Feature category to honor the greatest directorial debuts of the last year. The 2021 nominees in this category are “I Carry You With Me,” “The 40 Year Old Version,” “Sound of Metal,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “Nine Days.” Only “Sound of Metal” broke into the Oscars among these nominees.
As always, the budget cutoff for films to be eligible for the Spirit Awards is $22.5 million. For this reason, several high...

After the very impressive start of “Godzilla vs. Kong” last weekend, the MonsterVerse hit grossed $13.38 million. That’s a big drop from its opening, but how big is a matter of perspective.
Overall, the weekend’s top 10 grossed around $24 million, with all films seeing about $26 million. That’s about 45 percent less than last weekend’s holiday total, but still second best for the year so far. It would have been nice to have another big, new title to build on last weekend’s success, but for now struggling theaters have holdovers.
At $69.5 million domestic over 12 days, it is now the top-grossing domestic release in over a year. Several factors make that even more impressive: HBO Max subscribers can watch “Godzilla vs. Kong” for free, a substantial number of theaters remain closed (including most of Canada), and a swath of the potential audience remains reluctant to enter confined spaces. It suggests...

Movie theaters are a tiny part of the economy. In 2019, their entire, worldwide revenue — tickets sold, concessions, screen ads, rentals — grossed about the same as all McDonald’s in the U.S. Despite that smaller footprint, they symbolize a vital film industry — which is why a “Godzilla vs. Kong” performance that doubled expectations represents a sense of optimism that’s worth a lot more than $50 million.
The official total of $48.5 million for five days (don’t be surprised if it gets closer to $50 million when Sunday’s numbers are verified) represents $32.2 million for the three-day weekend. By midweek, it should outgross the totals for “Tenet” ($58 million) and “The Croods: A New Age” ($56 million).
This comes with day-and-date play for HBO Max subscribers in the U.S. and Premium VOD in Canada, where most theaters are closed. (It earned another $3 million there.) In the U.S., many theaters remain closed including nearly all Regal locations,...

“French Exit,” which closed last fall’s (mostly virtual) 2020 New York Film Festival, takes a lot of cues from its lead character — an eccentric, rich widow played with delicious zeal by Michelle Pfeiffer. The look is elegant and classy, but underneath things get pretty dark and twisted.
Still, the film wears its weirdness more lightly than the character. Frances Price (Pfeiffer) may be defiantly unconventional, thumbing her nose at social norms and the usual modes of parenting, but the movie tries to be dark and odd in a more beguiling way; it undercuts its polished stateliness with quiet black humor, though in the process it sometimes struggles to find the right tone for its polished, deadpan fatalism.
The result is a showcase for Pfeiffer’s sly but all-consuming embrace of a woman barely able to give a moment’s thought to anybody but herself, and one who surrounds herself with...

Michelle Pfeiffer shines in the quirky, new comedic drama French Exit. The film follows Frances Price (Pfeiffer), a widowed New York socialite who, along with son, moves to Paris after squandering what is left of her inheritance. Also accompanying them is the family cat, who may apparently be the reincarnated spirit of Frances’s deceased husband. Once in Paris, they connect with a variety of quirky individuals and eventually end up communicating with the husband/father via a séance and an otherworldly candle. All the while, Frances continues to liquidate her remaining funds towards making her “French exit.”
Along with Frances on her journey is her son, Lucas, played with detached amusement by Malcolm Price. When the film begins, Lucas is engaged to his longtime girlfriend Susan (Imogen Poots), but has no plans to inform his mother of the pending nuptials. This, of course, leads to Susan breaking off the engagement,...

As predicted, Roadshow’s The Dry has crossed the $20 million mark.
This means the Robert Connolly film, based on Jane Harper’s best selling novel, is now the 14th highest grossing Australian film of all time, surpassing titles such as The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Muriel’s Wedding and The Dish (not adjusting for inflation).
And the mystery drama is likely to still have life in it, with star and producer Eric Bana doing a set of Q&As screenings this week.
“The astounding success of The Dry confirms what Roadshow has always known, that there will always be an appetite for quality Australian productions which can without a doubt rival their Hollywood counterparts at the box office,” said Roadshow Films CEO Joel Pearlman.
“We will continue working with local industry and our partners in exhibition to deliver these crowd favourites to the big screen.”

It seems as if the year’s extended awards season has been going on forever. But for Sony Pictures Classics’ entries — including The Father, starring Anthony Hopkins, and French Exit, showcasing Michelle Pfeiffer — the quest is just beginning in earnest. The question is whether making such a late bid amid this season’s prolonged marathon can prove a winning strategy or if it puts the films at a disadvantage when so many others are already widely available.

The motion picture academy has handed out Oscars for leading performances since the first ceremony in 1929. While the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran, the Best Actress Oscar has tended to go to an ingenue. However, those age biases could be changing. While a whopping 32 of the 94 Best Actress champs have been in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last three women to win were 60-year-old Frances McDormand, 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). And Zellweger’s closest rival was 44-year-old Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2021 Oscars predictions for Best Actress.)
Besides Zellweger, the only other Best Actress champs in their 50s were both 54 when they won: Julianne Moore, who finally prevailed after four losses for “Still Alice” in 2015, and theater veteran Shirley Booth, who won for reprising her Tony-winning role in 1952’s “Come Back, Little Sheba.

Michelle Pfeiffer, over the course of more than 40 years in the business, has come to be regarded as one of the most talented movie stars in the history of Hollywood. She has three Oscar nominations and an Emmy nom to her name. She has been included on People magazine’s list of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World a record six times, twice appearing on the cover of the issue, including the first time it was published back in 1990. And though she has worked less frequently in recent years than she did in the past, when she does ...
Oscars are a time capsule. Though pundits may quibble about nominees or winners, one thing is beyond question: The film choices reflect the year in which they were released.
For example, in 1946, “The Best Years of Our Lives” hit a nerve as people were trying to rebuild their lives after WWII. The 1969 “Midnight Cowboy” captured all the sexual confusion, excitement and fear of that tumultuous decade.
This year’s contenders similarly reflect the moment we’re living in: a time of racial tension, gender battles, political wars, health issues and an overriding sense of doubt and isolation. A montage of 2020 film highlights would sum up the year just as accurately as newsreel clips.
Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7” perfectly parallels the current outrage at government lies and manipulations. Like many of the awards contenders, it’s set in the past, but it’s very much concerned...

After a week that exposed the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s own lack of diversity within its membership, the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place from both coasts on Feb. 28.
Although hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler addressed this controversy in their opening monologue and a trio of members of the HFPA took the stage to acknowledge their need to do better within the first half hour of the show, surprisingly few winners used their acceptance speech time as opportunity to discuss what their win meant in this larger context.
Instead, they chose to celebrate their fellow creatives — both the other nominees in their categories, as well as their cast and crew members with whom they worked and who helped make the win possible.
The three-hour broadcast pretty much went similarly uneventfully, with mostly expected winners actually being the ones to take the trophies, especially on the television side.

Rosamund Pike has a track record of getting audiences talking with her daring performances — but an unexpected bonus from her Golden Globe-winning turn in “I Care A Lot” has been a conversation about some of the most scrutinized members of society.
In a virtual backstage conversation at Sunday’s Globes telecast, following her win for best actress in a motion picture comedy, she said the buzz around the film was the closet thing she’d experienced to the phenomenon created by “Gone Girl” — the 2014 David Fincher thriller that put Pike on the map.
“The way people passed memes, quoted lines back and forth, the way that the audiences felt connected through conversations about it has been about as close as you can hope for outside the cinema,” Pike said of the Netflix original, which shot to number one on the service in dozens of counties upon its premiere. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have remained steadfast hosting partners for three Golden Globes ceremonies, at each other sides as they trade whipsmart, stick-it-to-Hollywood one-liners at the A-listers in the front row. But in their fourth stint leading the Globes on Sunday night, the two comedians were thousands of miles apart due to the coronavirus pandemic, Poehler at the ballroom of Los Angeles’ Beverly Hilton Hotel and Fey in New York City’s Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center.

Awards season rolls right along, albeit in somewhat strange fashion, with the 78th Annual Golden Globes Awards unspooling this evening, aimed at honoring the best of film and television from both 2020 and early 2021. Netflix led the pack in both television and film nominations, including six nods for “Mank” and five for “The Trial of the Chicago 7” on the film side, and six for “The Crown” in the TV arena. Other heavy-hitters in the mix included “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” and “The Queen’s Gambit.”
Chloé Zhao became only the second woman to win the Globes’ Best Director award, following Barbra Streisand, who first won it in 1984. She soon followed that win with a Best Picture, Drama win for her film “Nomadland.” “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” won Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category, with star Sacha Baron Cohen also winning Best Actor. Nominations for the Golden Globes are usually announced in December ahead of a ceremony in early-to-mid January, but the pandemic shifted the rollout for the 78th Golden Globe Awards into February. Nominations were announced February 3 ahead of a ceremony date of Sunday, February 28. Netflix leads all studios in 2021 with a total of 42 Golden Globe nominations, including leading film nominee “Mank” (six nominations) and leading television nominee “The Crown” (also six nominations). Other Netflix contenders include “The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “The Queen’s Gambit,” frontrunners to win Best Picture Drama and Best Limited Series.
While Netflix is far and away the most nominated studio, fellow streaming platforms Amazon and Hulu also managed to crack the double-digit nomination mark in 2021. Amazon Studios landed 10 noms thanks to “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” dominating the Musical/Comedy categories, plus “Small Axe.” Hulu also earned 10 nominations thanks to “Palm Springs” and a handful of television contenders,...
