Anders Holm played the role of Bow's father, Paul Johnson, in the pilot, and appeared in the early trailers and promo photos. However, Mark-Paul Gosselaar replaced Holm after the show was picked up, and Holm's scenes were re-shot for the first episode.
The theme song, "In the Mix," was written and performed by Mariah Carey, born to an African-American father and an Irish-American mother. The showrunners planned on having Carey make a special guest appearance on an episode, but the show was canceled before the episode was even written.
Like Dr. Rainbow Johnson's character in Black-ish (2014), Mixed-ish (2019) is loosely based on the early life of Rainbow Barris. Dr. Barris is an actual anesthesiologist who was raised in a biracial family. However, unlike Rainbow Johnson, Barris was the middle child of five, she was the first in her family to go to college, let alone earn a post-graduate degree, and she was not raised on a commune.
During the opening credits, Christina Anthony (Aunt Denise) is seen standing on a tombstone that says "Berliner Mauer 1961-1989". "Berliner Mauer" is German for "Berlin Wall," which the German Democratic Republic constructed in 1961, and citizens of East and West Germany famously destroyed in 1989. Ironically, Mixed-ish (2019) only covered 1985-1987 before ABC canceled it.
Most of the episode titles were named after songs from the 1980s.
