Una compañía de 
Dominic West (este hombre desde su McNulty de "The Wire" me tiene ganado para los restos) como Virilus, el duro general de las legiones de Roma destinado en la fiera Bretaña siendo presa de una emboscada en la que es hecho prisionero como consecuencia de haberse fiado de una exploradora (Olga Kurylenko) que resulta ser una fiera lugareña infiltrada con ansias de venganza; un grupo de fieles supervivientes de esa emboscada primero tratando de liberar a su jefe, y luego corriendo por su vida, su correspondiente toque romántico entre el soldado romano de ese pelotón de supervivientes llamado Quintus (Michael Fassbender) y una lugareña que los ayuda llamada Drusilla (Rachael Stirling), y alguna que otra traición con la que lidiar (ya saben, entre iguales y las devenientes de chanchullos políticos); con estos ingredientes, el buen director ingles Neil Marshall (también autor del guión) elabora un entretenido film bélico (sección "de romanos"), que si bien no es ni será una referencia en el género, se deja ver y no aburre en base a las dignas escenas de acción sazonadas de generosas y truculentas raciones de sangre que salpican su ajustado metraje, los bellos paisajes de Inglaterra y Escocia donde está rodada, una banda sonora "ad hoc", y el ritmo que imprime un siempre interesante Neil Marshall, que si bien ni mucho menos destaca sobre sus anteriores obras, si la hace interesante como veraniega película de romanos.
