'Deserto Feliz' (or 'Happy desert') tries to focus attention on a well known topic: an unhappy country girl moves to the big city, idly hoping for a better life over there.
Meant as a social statement, with its scene set in Brazil, this film delivers a true South American watching experience. Its shooting, its pace and its way of telling differ considerably from what we are used to in our Western world.
Director Paulo Caldas tries to involve you as much as possible. Well taking his time to enable you to participate in every scene, allowing you to get yourself penetrated. Supported by competent acting, in this respect 'Deserto Feliz' certainly succeeds.
Meant as a human document, 'Deserto Feliz' focuses on the fate of the unhappy country girl. Its scenery, story & picturing, although pretty adequate, come second place.
