Bob Denver was in reality drafted and with this episode was written out of the series, replaced by Michael J. Pollard as Maynard's beatnik cousin Jerome Krebs. But Bob Denver was declared 4F due to a neck injury and soon returned to the series in the episode "Greater Love Hath No Man."
In this episode, Maynard's parents make their only appearance.
The title makes reference to George Washington's farewell to the troops speech. On 4 December 1783, at Fraunce's Tavern in New York City General Washington bade farewell to his officers at the end of the Revolution before returning to Mount Vernon.
Maynard's mentioning to his parents about calling Dizzy Gillespie long-distance in Copenhagen (Denmark) has some basis in plausibility, as Gillespie gave a concert in Copenhagen Concert on September 17, 1959. This episode was probably shot before that date, but Gillespie's European tour schedule was likely to be known well in advance.
John Ford stalwart Willis Bouchey plays Maynard's father in the character's only appearance on the series. His frustration with his son equals Frank Faylen's as Dobie's father, and for the same reasons.
