Season 3 brought the rating down
gabrielmanoel-7828818 June 2022
I love the show. Seasons 1 and 2 were incredible. It was the first time I saw my story, as a Latino queer man represented to such fidelity. This was also the first show I saw without the bury your gays trope. However, season 3 was just weak story wise. They tried to explore how casual relationships work but weren't really successful at going deep into that (or anything else it feels to me).

Better than "Love, Simon"
djunaskye22 June 2020
I had low expectations for this series, since I didn't like the movie, but I just finished up season one and I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised! I liked it a lot. Compared to the movie this is, in my opinion, funnier, more relatable, and more realistic. The first episode was honestly kinda cringy, but after that, it started to pick up and I got invested in the storyline. Having a decent soundtrack is also a bonus!

What we didn't know we needed.
ikea201217 June 2020
This show fills a space that most of us were not aware we needed filled. Content like this would have been so beneficial to me, and others like me, if I was able to watch this at a younger age. The movie it's based off of is one of my favorite movies of all time but where this show really sets itself apart is how it handles the familial experience. I'm completely captivated by the journey the character takes and can relate to so many aspects of this. It's so important that this story is being told on this platform and I hope they continue to expand and diversify the telling of it. Straight people had so many examples of love and friendship while growing up and the LGBT+ community were left to journey through the dark. I know this just came out but I came here to praise this in all of its excellence before the career trolls arrived to attack it and minimize its efforts. I'm glad to hear there's already a writers room for season 2. Hopefully this blows up the way it should.

This hit just as hard as the movie did
matux3318 June 2020
Just binge watched the whole thing. There are movies and series where you can discuss the cinematography, character arcs, etc. In this case, all I care about how these 10 short episodes made me feel. And as a kinda-sorta-closeted-but-not-really guy, this series hit me hard. And that's all that matters. Yes, there are more critically acclaimed titles out there, with better storylines and whatnot, but none of them made me feel the way this series did. I'm currently crying. Damn the show's creators for not making this any longer. I really hope there are more seasons to this, because I'm just so emotionally invested in the story!

Season 2 Delivers
peterDM-3038012 June 2021
Wow. Season 1 was enjoyable and a good, simple starting point for this story, but Season 2 really stepped up in terms of improving the writing. The story lines are much more complex, the characters grow and learn, and the plot has great twists and turns. I can now say I genuinely like these characters and am invested in them. I think this show has at least 3 more good seasons left in it, and I hope they get the opportunity to continue telling these characters' stories. Everyone involved is doing great work.

First review I've ever done on here. I honestly wanted to hate this show. I felt like it was going to be a long, drawn out, copycat if Love Simon. It wasn't. I enjoyed Love Victor almost as much as LS. I feel like the show isn't trying to be something it's not and portrays the struggle of trying to figure out what you really want in an honest way. 10/10.

Overall decent, but got worse with every season
johnxrd27 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Let's start with the good things. This is a queer themed show for a young target audience and it is overall quite lighthearted and positive. IMO, this is already great because, while the straights™ have had their funny little rom coms for decades, shows and films about queer love have often been tragic, sad and everything but lighthearted.

"Love, Victor" does a good job at representing LGBT characters. Also, there are some really lovable side characters (e.g. Felix) and the character development of some characters (e.g. Lake, Victor's parents..) was decent. The show also touched on a whole lot of important but difficult topics, such as coming out, internalized homophobia, sex ed, healthy and unhealthy relationships etc.

HOWEVER, the third season in particular felt very (!) messy. Some plot elements such as the Victor/Nick relationship just felt super forced and rushed. I'm conflicted about making this argument because I am well aware of the fact that the portrayal of hook-up culture and STDs is important and not necessarily unrealistic, but it just did so little for the underlying plot of the show that I didn't like it.

Also, it felt as though someone broke up or started dating someone literally every 5 minutes. This kept going on and on and by the second last episode, I could not imagine how it would even be possible to tie up all the loose ends of the plot. Unfortunately, these fears turned out to be true because the last episode felt just as rushed and cheesy as the rest of the season.

TLDR: Cute, overall lighthearted show with decent portrayal of LGBT characters and topics; But: noticeable decrease in quality after first season, often felt too cheesy/rushed/forced/messy. I would not rewatch this, but I would watch it again for the first time.

Lovely.
jasnilsen17 June 2020
This series brought me so much joy. The storyline is very, very predictable, but somehow that doesn't matter since I didn't really start watching it to be surprised. I watched it to experience a roller-coaster of emotions, and the show did not disappoint me in that regard. Even though I wasn't surprised by a single thing that happened, I still admired the writing because, ostensibly, they had not included a single thing that was not somehow important later in the show, and that had me constantly analyzing everything that happened instead of being distracted by my phone or whatever else. Hoping for many more seasons (and many more shows like this)! Great job.

EDIT: I'm only three episodes in on season two, but I can already tell that they stepped things up (hence why I'm upping my rating from a nine to a ten.) I hate an unlikely fairytale love-story, and this isn't it. Ana Ortiz's acting is on point, and everyone needs a friend like Lake. Enjoy the binge, folks!

EDIT2: Finished. Mwah! Can't wait for season three.

Best show of 2020!!
This show is really good. The characters and the story was so good I literally couldn't stop watching. Barely any show can ever hold me this tight. I really suggest you watch this and if you loved Love, Simon then you'll love this! It deserves many seasons and deserves to be loved!

Trying to hard...
Elion875 March 2021
While the series is respecting their core values of the gay community. It's mostly a checklist "To do" series, with coming out moments, pronouns, inclusion, and so on. Its aimed at teenagers, so it lacks any depth, and continues into the repeating expecting traps. You will see what's coming a mile away, and there is little to no surprises throughout the series.

Its acted well enough, but nothing breakthrough, and its also no depth to the script. I liked it. But Movies like Call me by your name, or "We are who we are" still plays more to the depth of love stories.

Also telling stories like this, safely. While not exploring any sexual moments, to make it into a "family friendly" rated series; it is really not ... family friendly.

Love is not like this, it's not like a soap opera. It needs depth. Will all that negativity said, its has good momentum, but that also buries so many moments. the series is trying to cram 20 episodes of story into 10 episodes.

Review of the 3rd season
aecceity17 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This entire season felt like it was going around in circles. By the end, I still wasn't sure what I was supposed to have learned about the characters or what to feel. A quick overview of the storylines this season:

Mia and Andrew. Literally the same old story of Andrew putting his every need aside for Mia and basically being the perfect boyfriend (without being much else) while Mia is struggling with her connection - and lack of connection - to her family. EXACTLY the same thing as last season.

Lake and Lucy. One thing is how quickly their relationship progressed, but it made my head spin how quickly Lake fell for Lucy without us having seen ANY interaction between them prior to last season's finale. Sure, they were cute. But using the typical scenario of bravely breaking up because one of the characters is moving away just seems so tired and certainly not made to appear any less unoriginal by the fact that Mia and Andrew were dealing with the EXACT same thing at the same time.

Felix and Pilar. Again, they were cute and I actually thought their conflict was, if not good, probably the best one out of the weak choices. I understood Felix' dilemma and Pilar's frustration with feeling he chose her family over her. But it was wrapped up kind of badly and very abruptly.

Victor and Benji. Without a doubt the least functioning relationship on the show and yet the writers chose to have them broken up the ENTIRE season instead of proving why they were even supposed to be worth saving. The decision to have Victor forget about Rahim in 0,5 seconds and then bring in a third guy just seemed so odd. Especially because they then built Victor and Nick up in a way that actually kind of made me vote for them. They were certainly good for each other and seemed to grow in each other's company (even if Nick remained a half-empty shell of a character). I understand that first love often makes for the more "epic" story. But only if the characters are shown to actually make sense together.

Also, the way the broken relationships were all quickly resolved like pearls on a string in the finale was almost a little comedic and certainly didn't feel authentic. Overall, the entire season felt very lackluster.

A Very Good Follow-Up to Love, Simon
aidanratesmovies29 June 2020
Funny, sweet, and by all means deeply heartfelt- Love, Victor is bound to have you laughing and crying till the very end, in a very good, but not perfect spinoff, of the fantastic film Love, Simon. I have to admit at first I was quite skeptical of the series, I had seen the trailer, and didn't think it was going to be much. I've seen Love, Simon countless times since its release in 2018, and it has become easily one of my favorite films of the last decade, so I thought this could not nearly meet the expectations I wanted for it. However, although that fact was still somewhat true, I was delighted to see how much humanity they could put into a spinoff of one of my favorite films, and was often delighted to watch it throughout. The premise of the show, isn't anything you haven't seen or heard of before, but even though the storyline may not be as unique as Love Simon's its character depth is often quite good. I always enjoyed watching the characters of Victor, Mia, and Felix on screen- and found it quite impressive how much the show developed their characters as time went on, and how much effort was put into doing so. Felix was most notably my favorite character of the show, as I find his personality a lot similar to my own, and found it touching to see someone so weird and so caring on screen. His (Anthony Turpel) character I felt was very unique, and not something you see often in this type of thing, so it was always refreshing to his interactions throughout the show. Victor (Michael Cimino) also gives quite a great performance throughout the show, and we can see that circumstances for these type of things are not easy as for some as they are for others. I liked this take and view on the story, and was glad they went that direction. I was also overjoyed to see the callbacks to Simon (Nick Robinson), and his subtle voice appearances throughout the episodes, which honestly made me quite overjoyed to see his involvement with the franchise is still present as well as Keiynan Lonsdale who played Bram. The show can be a bit cheesy at times, as well as formulaic, and is notably more so towards the beginning. It's characters of Lake and Andrew often feel incredibly cliche and they make light of this fact in the show, but it can't help but feel like you are watching useless characters as they are on screen. I did enjoy the touching romance between Lake and Felix on the show, but I felt Bebe Wood's performance as Lake was a bit overdone as well as Andrew's as it just all felt a bit wooden. The pilot is exactly what you expect it to be, as well as most of the third episode, which was kinda a bummer, considering they had a lot more to work with rather than just putting it all crammed together in the end, but the final few episodes are incredibly touching, heartbreaking, and emotional to watch, and watching it all together, I wouldn't want it any other way. My Rating: 8.75/10

The Sequel We Never Thought We Wanted
wjmlorenzo25 June 2020
Love, Victor is so sweet and realistic. Well acted, especially Mia and Victor. All of the characters are gems especially the "best friends" who are goofy and quirky that blends together with the main casts. They should give a raise to whoever arranged the soundtracks to this show because it is very enticing and upbeat that amplifies the volume of their emotions. The conflicts are good, although a little dramatic but it is painted enough to reflect a situation.

This show learned from the lapses made in "Love, Simon" which is the lack of emailing between Simon and Blue, here it was emphasized which makes sense because the book transcends that feeling of old-fashioned but romantic communication.

Overall, Victor is soooo adorable. This show is really a treat. Good JOB!

Cute Show, Kind Of Cringy At Points
zqtssmm2 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The show was cute and showed the true realities of coming out to one's friends and family. It also depicted the real fundamentals of coming to terms with your own sexuality.

I feel like this show could've been more than just a spinoff from Love Simon. It could have easily been its own thing, in my opinion.

In the show, I feel that there where points where the dialogue was very robotic/scripted, it seemed - and I know this sounds stupid to say, because it was - like it had been written, and it was not being read again instead of being more natural-sounding.

SPOILER WARNING: Another thing I enjoyed about it was how it showed some realities within the LGBT+ community - rather than only showing picture-perfect, cute parts as some shows do - for example, at one point Victor finds himself in a 'casual relationship', this shows him how many people in the LGBT+ community just want quick hookups, rather than regular relationships. He also has to deal with a not-so-supportive mother.

I feel that these are things which the watcher may be able to relate to.

We need more content like this.
ann9618 June 2020
The fact that I'm even writing a review for this - something I've never done before - is enough. I simply have to shout out all the feelings I have about this show right now. I'm serious. I literally just pulled an all-nighter to binge all 10 episodes of this even though I have a full day of work ahead of me but I just could. Not. Stop. Watching

I teared up and straight up cried so many times throughout the whole thing because I saw so much of myself in Victor. This is just such an incredibly heartwarming, touching, beautiful and relatable story. I strongly believe most of us who have gone through the whole experience of trying to figure out your sexuality at a younger age really could have used a show like this growing up.

I absolutely adored the movie but I might just love this show even more.

Hoping for more Love, Victor and a LOT more shows and movies like this in general.

Safe
joeface-3228119 June 2021
This series plays it safe in almost every way, and sticks to cliches long established by teen romance shows of its kind. The lead character is pretty vanilla, and doesn't have much to him. The supporting cast, however, is great, and have some of the more interesting side stories. Overall, if you're gay and looking for a show that finally represents the struggle, this isn't it. If you're simply looking for a casual love story, try it out.

21st century series
henriquezapala17 June 2020
I really enjoyed this series for the fact that embodies all the new series trend in a good way. They are almost 30 minutes each episode wich is great because nobody has time to an hour episode. The cast is really diverse. For me every character has a good plot, for me all the plots was interesting and I was invested in all of them. For me the only downside is that I think that the show needed more episodes, because there is a good building in the plot but the last episode a lot of things happens and I thought it was a little rushed.

I'm a bit older and I wish I had something like this to watch when I was in high school! The show was really cute, although a bit too cheesy sometimes and tried to bee too dramatic, but hey, it's a hs romance/drama. The last season felt a bit rushed and I was annoyed by how every 3 minutes someone broke up or started dating someone. But anyways, this show will stay in my memory as a good one!!

Love,Victor is an inferior sequel series to the original l film Love, Simon, but it still has some enjoyable moments and characters. Also, the show is only 10 episodes with good pacing in each episode so easy binge.

3rd time's not a charm
michal-5059516 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The only reason I gave this five stars and not zero, is because of the first 19 episodes. The first two seasons they built up such a strong story with great, round characters. Different than any other show on air. All of their hard work came crumbling down, however, starting with the final episode of season 2. The Vahim kiss came out of nowhere and was just all kinds of wrong. It mainly felt to me like it was added so the can end season 2 on a cliffhanger. Felix and Pilar dating also started abruptly, before we even had a moment to digest his break up from Lake. Not to mention Lake and Lucy... they're storyline felt like someone thought about it last minute and just threw it in there, because, why not? Andrew went from having a great character development, to being such a flat one with no arc. His whole purpose of season 3 seemed to be just being Mia's boyfriend. It was such a messy season, completely all over the place, that I don't even know what it was I just watched. All I do know is that it felt extremely rushed and nothing really made sense. Least of all the whole Nick storyline, because like where the heck did he come from? It just made the whole twist so cheap, like all someone needs is someone to get under to get over another. Which is the worst lesson to teach people. They had such a prime opportunity to teach teens how to cope with such grown up topics, how not to run away from troubles and how to deal with it together without falling completely apart. And even if not together, they could have taught an even better lesson of how to get over another by getting under yourself, and how to be strong on your own and not to need someone to be your best self. I liked the final scene of the season, but it also made me feel like the whole messy season was just so they can end it with a full circle on that ferris wheel. The only things I really enjoyed about this season was the friendship between Rahim and Benji, and that Venji ended up together after all.

Love, Victor season 1
Avidviewer-0284722 June 2020
SEASON 1

It's a spin off from Greg Berlanti's movie "Love, Simon", the creators of this series were the screenwriters of "Love, Simon". A lot of gay coming of age films tend to be short films or B movies, but Berlanti's film had a really good script, good cast and was a top quality production.

The mainly young cast in "Love, Victor" is good with a few cross over characters from "Love, Simon" and the script is good. It's not another stupid rom-com. It's nice to see a lead character who is gay, most LGBT characters are in supportive roles. Seems like most of the LGBT characters in network and streaming series are lesbian characters, perhaps because two women kissing doesn't make hetero men uncomfortable like watching two men kissing does. The main thing that I disliked about "Love, Victor" was it's 30 minute episodes, too much time is lost to the opening intro and ending credits. It's on a streaming service so it probably has a better chance of being renewed than if it was on network TV.

Hope it gets a season 2, there are so few gay characters on TV that it's great to see gay characters portrayed in a positive light. Too many "coming out" stories or "gays dying of AIDS".

EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH LOVE, VICTOR.
spiderdib1 August 2020
SEASON 1 REVIEW: Sometimes I'm not really a big fan of LGBT productions for teens given that I don't really see the "dark" side of it, I mean, the realism of being part of this community aside of realizing you are part of it, "Love, Victor" totally wins giving a shot of realism, doing this in a light dosis and in a interesting way.

Being able to see terms like being a latin, religion, racism, family problems and a bit of economical concern that actually concerns the teen (while dealing with coming out in this environment) is pretty human; as a latin and part of LGBT community I feel represented.

The connection with the movie "Love, Simon" is awesome even though I think this show is more valuable than that movie, at first with the news that a spin off of the movie was in plans I thought nothing but "Okay, the movie got famous and they want more money of it, how the hell are they gonna connect them? They're probably planning on selling it as something similar of Simon"...but WOW, just WOW, this show totally kicks the movie out of the way and deserves more recognition.

In conclusion, you will not regret watching "Love, Victor".

SESION 2 REVIEW: Sincerely, I can be totally honest saying "WOW, how in earth is possible for a tv series that have a better second season in comparison with the first?" It barely happens. Love, Victor Season 2 let me fall in love even more with every single character, know them all and even better, see every problem surrounding coming out (which is clearly even more than just having peace with yourself) through the fantastic acknowledgment the series does with every single aspect of this situation.

This series just keeps getting better and better. Please, keep doing it and inspiring a bunch of people. It's necessary.
