Excellent portrait of the current system. The series shows the degradation of the main character's businessman, who is an exception for his sense of morality and justice, until the end where he does not mind killing or having his relatives killed in order to support himself. In the end, it doesn't matter who Midas' favorites are because it is capitalism itself. Maintain corruption and privilege in exchange for whatever and even if innocent people die. By the way, very good actors and the final scene of the car was well planned.

Three episodes would have done it for this tonally flat, slow series.

Conceptually, this type of plot has been developed before in many forms, regardless of their origins, and more often than not it's been more entertaining. It's tedious watching a middle-aged, divorced, relatively unlikeable wealth-inheritor figuratively wrench his hands over and over, and wrestle with his conscience so hard and so often, only to be kind of a self-serving dick at the finale.
The other characters weren't fleshed out enough for my taste, so their motivations weren't interesting, nor did they inspire much sympathy. The philosophical speeches peppered here and there were Far Too Long, although they were well-crafted. Then there's the anticlimactic non-reveal ending after a lot of time-wasting protest/riot scenes, driving scenes, sex scenes, watching people smoke and look out of windows, guitar solos, staring at computers, crying jags; it's not a very good production.

Don't expect much A bit cliche, unconvincing acting too

Pros:
It's a well-filmed, probably fairly well budgeted TV series, with some good Spanish actors.
Cons:
The plot does not makes sense really, and it's a bit of a millenial's cliche. I am not going to spoil it by saying more.
The actors, while great names, they play unconvincing roles.

Extortion is a dangerous game ... combined with civil unrest ... everyone involved might be in over their head. Or are they? And what does it do to those involved psychologically? If you are responsible if someone lives or dies ... no matter if you know those people or not, it is a heave toll to bear.
So having the main character portrayed by one of Spains finest actors is quite the genius move to make. Also if you know him, you know he can play many things and can portray many things too. Sometimes likeable, sometimes something more sinister ... and we may see some of that here. It is not bad to stretch ones acting muscles ... some of the more "evil" side can be attributed to the stress though that he has to endure - can it not? A short series with an interesting turn of events along the way ... and some romance to spice things up too (social and other questions included)

1st 3 episodes

Boring? No. At least first 3 episodes kept me engaged. After that things got a bit too confusing and too complex. Marta Belmonte character was irritating me big deal, the money hungry ex-wife cliché was 'tiring". Did Marta Milans augmented her face? She is only 38, but looks older and surgically "enhanced". Can't accept actors with "fake" faces. Episodes 3-5- too much philosophy that feels rehearsed, robotic. I'll finish watching. But intriguing beginning is not living up to my expectations so far.
Really good! original story based on a book!

What is power and money? Very exciting series , 6 episodes. Luis Tosar, again! Awesome! The police inspector Guillermo Toledo also awesome!
Just don't miss it if you like good thrillers with an interesting, .. very interesting subject. The ones only scoring this series with a 2 or 3, just incomprehensible!
Good idea poor execution

Interesting Plot. Something to think on

Incredible miniseries! it is already noticeable in its plot and philosophy that it is based on a classic author.
it simmers and finally gets you where it needs to go. I look forward to a continuation. Freemasonry present as the hand that touches the cradle. plot, action, drama and some philosophy. What more could you want?! I haven't seen such high quality material for a long time.
What is wrong with Netflix?

Promising story, Rubbish ending.

Warning: Spoilers
It started well and I was interested to see if I had guessed who the Minions of Midas were, I had an idea, but we never find out because of a useless cop out ending. Really disappointing and a total waste of my time.
One of the best

Ultimately made no sense

We are left with no clue as to who the minions are, why the character changed, who he saw at the ending... which means this was largely a waste of time. The lead character also emoted in a way no "real men" emote, he did some just plain stupid and irrational-to-the-degree -unbelievable things few people would do/not do. Point: his behavior was not realistic.
Decent show.

A pointless allegory of evil
bright1026 November 2020
I think it was the most boring series we have seen in Netflix. In my opinion it should end in the third episode. The plot was bizarre, the characters even the protagonist, were vague, their reactions ambivalent. As for the plot, we were supposed to understand what is happening at least in the last two episodes. We didn't get a clue. Pointless chats, the same atmosphere throughout the series, no evolution, no meaning. Just a pointless allegory of evil consuming the characters.
It could have, should have, been a solid 8, but....

5 well-made entertaining and promising episodes, pleasantly watchable - and one dire train-wreck of an episode that made the whole thing a total waste of time.
I'm not rating it low for the same reason that others are: I enjoyed the character development and slow-burn style, with almost a hint of noir. I'm up for a range of styles and don't need something to be a perfect action flick to score highly.
However, it was like the writers believe some things in the realm of social commentary, but can't say why they believe it or what it means ... and then they impose the same empty ramblings on the rest of us.
It was NOT worth watching, and I'd only recommend it to people who love getting lost in their social philosophising - whatever the heck that means.
Urgh.

Mysterious puppeteers pull the strings

As the new proprietor of a newspaper becomes embroiled in MoM's extortion of his millions, he tries to take the high road, however the powers that be don't share his view. His noncompliance with his blackmailers has fatal results. This is set to a backdrop of Spain in a state of internal revolt, similar to 2011 or 2018, when citizens took to the streets for peaceful marches protesting against anti-austerity measures, politicians and bankers. Excessive force was observed, and the protests escalated and became out of control resulting in the armed forces being called in to quash the violence and arson. One of his newspaper's journalists responds in a TV broadcast: " . . . leaders condone their actions as being for the greater good . . .". One death in this state of chaos to prevent the deaths of many etc. It is with this moral and ethical dilemma we are left to contemplate. What would you have done?
Pointless and boring show

Excellent series based on an excellent book. Perhaps not for the average US audience raised on car chases, guns and everything spelled out to then in American English.
Wonderful to see European actors without big blonde hair, whitened teeth and fake mannerisms. Recommended highly.
CONSUMING AND POINTLESS
shoma-chatterji17 November 2020
I did not quite care for the series because it finally zeroes down on negative moral values that surpass judgement of any kind in the climax. The technical execution is good but too much focus on a single protagonist tends to make it boring, Though it is pegged as a thriller, the thrill is not solved till the end of the series. Why was this guy being blackmailed at all? I am not that intelligent to read between the lines of this very confusing drama
