Not great but good

Chemistry between two main characters kind of blah. Beautiful scenery and cast but there are better Hallmark movies.

Nice musical hallmark movie
azmanomar1 April 2020
I always love music related movies. The main characters didn't dissapoint me at all unlike the views of many in the comment. But I do agree with them that Hallmark should have just let them sing in full version towards the end as that will gives me a complete sastifaction.

It's playing while I'm doing other things
bameiboo7 October 2020
Why do they hire these actresses with squeaky annoying voices! The lead isn't to awful but all the women around her (except the bride) are terrible sounding. Absolutely makes the movie unenjoyable and unwatchable. I'm doing some of my crafting and this is playing in the background I really do not care what happens It's just noise!

Hallmark movie, two attractive people find a way to get back together.
TxMike1 February 2021
True to form, this Hallmark movie is set in Washington state but filmed in Canada. Two 30-somethings, a guy and a gal, used to be a couple in Nashville, they sang together and wrote songs together. She left the relationship because he was too controlling and she went back to her grandmother's resort to be the wedding photographer.

Now after two years apart her old boyfriend's sister is coming into the resort for her wedding, and of course he is there too. The movie is mostly about their wanting to reconnect and finding a way to do it.

Some of the dialog and situations seemed phony but overall it is an entertaining, lightweight 80 minutes of rom-com. My wife and I watched it at home on DVD from our public library.

Observation

I thought this movie was decent and I was glad to see diversity that reflects the real world. I've noticed that movies that have people of color for hallmark they tend to get low reviews. Just something I've noticed.

Fantasy Island
atlasmb6 June 2021
This Hallmark romance concerns a music producer who travels to an island community where his sister is to be married. As in many Hallmark films, the meet cute is a reunion of exes. Jake (Scott Micheal Foster) finds that the wedding photographer is Maggie (Laura Osnes), a former girlfriend and musical partner.

This film features plenty of music--incidental and otherwise---including the wonderful voice of Osnes. She also has a strong filmic presence, so I am not sure why this film does not make more impact. The central couple has adequate chemistry. And the settings are beautiful.

Perhaps the script relies too much on the mechanics of wedding preparations, losing its "magic" among the details. But even if it could have been more, it's an enjoyable diversion.

Love this movie but........
sjd05624 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a Hallmark movie lover. I especially love the movies with music. Which is why I get exasperated when the music is particularly good and we don't have the opportunity to hear a full song. The dialog that was injected into an otherwise beautiful last song just ruined the moment. The actors were great. Their faces conveyed enough information that the explanation could have waited. C'mon Hallmark! You're better than this!!

This is boring movie.
chocolateunicorn14 June 2020
I love Hallmark movies, but this one was boring. Rehash of same old story, ie, ex-boyfriend, unfulfilled dream, going back home, etc. Absolutely no chemistry between the lead actors. Turned it off after 45 minutes. Too painful to watch. The only good thing was the magnificent scenery.

Not much to see here folks

7.3 stars.

Maggie (Osnes) takes pictures, her Nanna owns an event center on an island with a very small population? Maggie is a professionally good singer, but she quit her career years back because her boyfriend and singing partner Jake (Foster) was too bossy.

Now Jake's sister is getting married on the island, Maggie is the photographer... surprise they all meet, of course there's tension between Maggie and Jake, they were blindsided by Jake's sister, she never told them they would be seeing each other at the wedding.

Jake is still the controlling sort, Mags is turned off by it, the sister is still getting married so they need to straighten up, the mayor will perform the service, he has a huge flower garden.

Back to Maggie, she's still taking a bunch of pictures, she gets guilted into singing with Jake and it's in bad taste. Jake currently works with a superstar singer who is releasing a single, but it falls through, maybe Maggie will go back to her singing career?

Not a great movie, just ok. The singing is really good, and I added .3 stars for it.

In the Key of Love
shootingstarr122 March 2020
There are so many really good movies put out by Hallmark. I don't know why some are so good and full of substance & others like this one are just not there. It didn't flow well. And, was just so off.

Not a fan!

Music in the key of love
alexgibbsa30 December 2021
I love this movie because this is about how to ex sing partners find each other again because the phoropter for his sisters wedding is his old ex sing partner. And they end up sing a song together for his sisters wedding. But then he gets a opportunity to song again, but he turns it down was he relishes that he is in love with this ex sing partner. And this Spring wedding/music movie is a great on for families to sit down together and watch.

One of the worst movies from Hallmark
flashlightreview24 July 2020
While this movie deviates from the standard Hallmark recipe in some areas (i.e interracial marriage), the overall movie is just bad.
  • The two lead characters don't have any chemistry.
  • The plot is worse than usual and has no dynamic that develops either.
  • The movie feels therefore slow and the acting feels fake.
  • Writing: there is no way even the best actors could work with the dialogues written into this play. there is just not much going on.

There are so many amazing Hallmark movies out there - go watch those instead!

Great movie
Girlsrock298 February 2021
First of all to all those people who gave this movie a 1 star review, I pity you. This movie was fantastic because it was about the story about two people getting married and it was also about two people finding love again after a long time. I have seen a movie with Laura Osnes once before and she was great in it and was great in this movie as well. I also loved the fact that with every hallmark movie I watch I recognize the background in almost every movie. I am saying this because I love that almost every hallmark movie I have scene, they are filmed in beautiful B.C. Canada.

Love off key
TheLittleSongbird10 March 2022
The concept actually sounded very nice and sweet, even if not novel, music has always been and still is a huge part of my life and absolutely love it when any film etc. Centres anything around it. Such as 'In the Key of Love'. Actually have seen Hallmark do music-related films quite well, so there actually weren't many doubts and expectations were actually higher than most Hallmark films released this particular year. Also have nothing against Laura Osnes as an actress or singer.

Something that has not changed watching 'In the Key of Love'. Unfortunately, the film as an overall whole felt very off, the music side of things is quite good and the setting is used well but 'In the Key of Love' is very off-key when it comes to the romance and most of the overall execution. It is not awful and there are things that it does well. There are also a lot of things that are done rather badly, so a big part of me could not help feeling disappointed.

'In the Key of Love' has good things. Osnes is very appealing in the female lead role, managing to make a character very likeable (shame that the way she is treated by some of the others is anything but) and her singing ability is nothing short of fabulous. Shannon Chan-Kent and Andrea Brooks bring some vigour to their roles. Did like the chemistry between the three ladies.

Cannot neglect talking about the scenery, which is spectacular and it was clear that the cameraman/cinematographer was in love with it because the colours are so vivid and the vistas are so picturesque. There is a lot of music and it's full of energy and makes one want to dance and sing along.

Do have to agree with others though that it was not a good move to not have the songs played in full, they tend to be far too short and round off abruptly. There are more serious drawbacks though, one of the biggest ones being Scott Michael Foster who has very little personality and never looks comfortable or like he wants to be there. He and Osnes have no chemistry, not only because the relationship is underused and under-developed but also because the chemistry feels mismatched. But even more so because the character is so unlikeable, due to overwritten character flaws, that he treats people horribly and due to never growing as a character. Didn't like how easily manipulated and walked over Osnes' character was, she was an appealing character but lacked assertiveness.

The story is paper thin and excessively predictable from following a well worn formula too faithfully and too to the letter, everything here has been seen before. The relationship is not used enough and never gets a chance to develop, playing second fiddle to the setting. Which was used well, but the story surrounding it comes over as very sluggish in pace and too textbook. The script is corny, lacked personality and doesn't flow all that well. Would have liked a lot more development to the characters, especially Foster's, and the direction is pretty routine.

In summary, pretty lacklustre and never feels in harmony. 4/10.

Laura is a lovely singer. My only problem with the film was that the songs were so short.

I finally turned it off after the first 30 minutes. The main characters had zero chemistry and neither could act.

Maggie (Laura Osnes), Sasha (Shannon Chan-Kent), and Jennifer (Andrea Brooks)
aab8749 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Favorite scene with

Maggie (Laura Osnes) - Canoeing and talking with Jake and falling in the water.

Sasha (Shannon Chan-Kent) - Finally being brave enough to stand up to Evelyn regarding her job, and getting what she wants.

Jennifer (Andrea Brooks) - Telling Jake that he needs to return to Nashville to record the song.

No chemistry with main characters
micpou8 April 2020
I really like the fact that Hallmark put in people of different sizes and different races together. However, even though I like the voice of Laura Osnes, could not stand the lead male. The leading man who was her ex-boyfriend and brother of the bride to be was super annoying, smacked a lot, was NOT at all handsome - Hallmark could have done much better. Don't waste your time with this movie.

Didn't work for me
toncincin24 March 2020
Boring. Didn't like the leading man. Not a big fan of Laura Osnes. (Didn't like the Christmas movie either...) She's probably great on Broadway - but doesn't translate to TV movies Well. I watched an hour of the movie - which was probably 30 minutes longer that it needed to be. It was on my DVR - stopped and deleted it.

First Hallmark movie I had to turn off
rsk-3620123 March 2020
I have never turned off a Hallmark movie until this one. There was no chemistry between the two main characters and he was so pushy and controlling that if it hadn't been a Hallmark movie, I would have thought it was a Lifetime movie about an abusive relationship. The main female character allowed herself to manipulated by every person in her life: her grandmother, best friends, and ex-boyfriend and everyone acted charmed by her being manipulated. This movie made me so uncomfortable that I had to turn it off. Shame on you, Hallmark.

Laura Osnes is beautiful and talented!
phd_travel25 August 2019
Laura Osnes is one of the few Broadway stars beautiful enough to appear on screen. Many Broadway actresses who can sing and dance so well are not quite pretty enough for romantic roles on the big or small screen. Laura is one of the few that is beautiful and talented. A wider audience than New York needs to see how special she is. Hope to see lots more of her on screen.

This is a Hallmark movie that involves a wedding photographer and her romance set on a pretty lake. Even the usual over chirpy Hallmark tone doesn't grate here. The wedding she is photographing is inter racial - part of a trend of Hallmark to become more diverse. She meets up with an old flame she used to sing with. Guess what happens? The song she sings is forgettable though.

Charming enough to watch.

not so bad, but...
Kirpianuscus4 July 2021
Scott Michael Foster is the worst option for Jake role. But she saves the film. And the high predactibility of story. Another good point - the music, Coleen Winton and, maybe, the flowers. Sure, it is unfair to be too critic about it but , obvious, it could be better, using the old cliche of the wedding of the sister of ex in the political correctness note but giving something more attractive. But, maybe, it is enough.

Hate these!!
Marynewcomb20131 April 2020
Hallmark has the same plot in all movies pretty much & some are done really well, while others are just blah!! These country singing ones & other musical movies they do are the worst!!! Not everyone wants these kinds of movies!! It's especially that way with this one where the acting is forced & the singing is awful!!! When casting, you have to cast people that work well together, not pick who you're told to pick!! This just needs to be put in the forget forever stack!!!
