Must-see psychological thriller

If you're in the mood for a ghost story, don't miss this one. It's about a struggling novelist with writer's block who gets a free place to stay on a remote island. Sounds perfect, except it's the dead of winter and something's wrong with the house.

The acting is terrific; Kate Lyn Shiel does a great job of setting the tone with her creepy narration. It's dark, moody, and mysterious. Jay Duplass is convincing as a desperate but likable writer, and he adds some dark humor with his delivery of the lines. I laughed aloud in some scenes.

The director, Thomas Matthews, skillfully tells the story, mixing what appears to be archived footage and memories past, while building suspense throughout the film. It's fast-paced and fun and will keep you guessing-and on the edge of your seat-until the end.

More from Thomas Matthews

Ghostwritten had me from the beginning. Jay Duplass delivers a quirky, tormented performance consistent with the tone filmmaker Thomas Matthews delivers across the film through sound, editing, and visual effects.

World-weary Guy Laury (Jay Duplass) refuses to confront the plainness of his life and instead suppresses his self-disdain behind belief that he can resurrect his once-promising writing career. Eventually, his internal demons and delusions catch up to him in the claustrophobic isolation of a dreary New England island town. The story itself is a haunting and original take on mid-life crisis and a reminder to pursue life for the love of life itself.

This is a worthy film on its own, and I want to see more from this promising young filmmaker.

Instant psychodelic classic

Eerie and eclectic. Jay Duplass is perfect as an Everyman trapped in a suspenseful web of forbidden desire and vaulting ambition on an Atlantic island in winter.

Kate Lyn Sheil (Sun Don't Shine, Tomorrow She Dies) and Maria Dizzia (Christine, Martha Marcy May Marlene) are excellent and mysterious. I also loved seeing Henry Fool and Book of Life's Thomas Jay Ryan in a Faustian role.

The mix of sound and picture is unlike anything I've ever experienced. I wish more films could keep me on the edge of seat like this one. Fans of dark seventies and nineties indies will dig it. Highly recommended.
