Double crossing
jotix10021 April 2010
Warning: Spoilers
As the story begins, we watch a truck stopping in front of an office building. The man that descends from the vehicle is an exterminator, supposedly, but of course, he is someone impersonating a bug man. He gets rid of some secretaries and begins to arrange the place, changing into a business suit. He is Solal, a well connected member of a mafia family operating in France. He had set an appointment with Lardier, a man that knows his identity and knows he was set up. Solal is murdered on the spot.

Solal's family swears to avenge his death. His brother, nicknamed Cash, enters the story at this point. He and his family have devised a plan for getting the murderer and for a caper that involves the stealing of valuable diamonds that a rich man will be bringing to a resort hotel in the Riviera.

There is an ambitious police investigator, Julia Molina, who is into Cash's activities. She wants to infiltrate the operation because she has a plan in mind that might be flawless. For that, she must become irresistible to another group that is being put together to help with the caper. She is in for a big surprise! "Ca$h" is a French thriller by Eric Besnard, who also wrote the script for the film. One thing for sure, Mr. Besnard has a keen eye in which to set the action. The director takes us on a tour of the world that only a few privileged people get to know and play. Mr. Bernard has written a lot for the movies. Giles Henry, the cinematographer, clearly understood what the man in charge wanted, giving the film what it needed to go along with the action.

Jean Dujardin plays Cash with playful style. Valeria Golino, a good Italian actress usually seen in American films, is on hand to play Julia Molina. Jean Reno, an actor that has done a lot of action films, doesn't have much to do in here. Alice Taglioni, Francois Berland, Cieran Hands, and the rest of the supporting cast make a good contribution to the picture.

Not quite a "sting", but neither "THE Sting"!
Mihnea_aka_Pitbull3 September 2008
The comparison is fateful - for better (as "unavoidable") and worse (as "suicidal"). The main fault lays in the characters (none has the perverse charm of Gondorff and Hooker) and in those parts of the script that depict the heists (not by far as ingenious as in the best movies of the genre, but neither as hair-pulled and flat as in the "Ocean..." series). Fortunately, the direction is fast-paced and stylish, so this saves the day more or less. And... okay, I won't spoil the ending, but one thing should be stated: it's totally unlikely. You do NOT pull such an elaborate farce, ONLY to send (...) screaming in a motor boat without fuel in the middle of the Mediterranean.

Further, the perpetual use of the trick "I'm not who you thought me to be" is hugely abused of, reminding rather of "The Pirates of the Caribbean". What really stands is the sparkling direction and the old-fashioned style, nostalgically recalling the end of the Seventies. For such a merry flick, it's positively refreshing.

Humorous, delightful, stylish, entertaining
jalind-764-78075913 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Contains a partial spoiler at the end with a warning line as a comment about another review...

I found this a delightful, fun and entertaining French movie about a masterful and highly convoluted confidence crime (or crimes). Thanks TF1 et al for a fun and entertaining movie! I'm recommending this one to friends for light entertainment.

I feel it is well cast, has some fine contemporary actors/actresses and I believe they play their characters well. I feel an easy-going style, fun, light-hearted portrayal to the characters that plays well in the overall style of story. This is, after all, light-hearted pure entertainment. I can imagine the characters fun to portray and this film fun to make.

The scenery and setting are bright and up-scale. Nothing is dreary or drab, adding to the overall light-hearted and delightful feel.

I feel the reveals are well paced and will not give away too much or too little (at least for me) right up to the end. The pace seems right to me. It felt quick but not rushed. It kept moving and left me little time to ponder deeply, something I feel appropriate for this type of movie.

There is virtually no action in this movie, it is all comedic drama with what I feel is well-paced tension and relief.

Some dialog is in English, some in French. I've not been able to figure that one out, since all the characters speaking English are supposedly French. The English dialog has some Anglicisms recognizable to me (e.g. a "fiver") but may not be to some in the US and the English accents British or Canadian. The English (I'm not a francophone) subtitles for the French dialog seem very natural with the characters and what little French I know although I can't speak for the total accuracy of the translation. This is one of the easiest subtitled movies to watch I've seen, and I tend to browse the foreign film sections of video stores and rentals more than any other section.

I think all but the most naive viewers will start realizing what is really happening very close to the end, but not too soon to spoil the ending. I think the writers, director and cast have all made viewers' reveal timing nicely elastic and not brittle.

Partial Spoiler Alert....

One reviewer felt that no group would do anything this elaborate just to leave _____ out in the Mediterranean in a boat out of gas and found that too far outside the realm of suspended disbelief for comfort. I believe that review completely misses the strongly implied impending mortal revenge about to take place off camera and just past the movie's time line. But, I may be willing to suspend disbelief for this form of entertainment a little more than that reviewer. As with all movies of this type, the intricacy of the scheme hatched is far beyond what anyone would sensibly rely on in real life.

End Partial Spoiler...

Clever. Maybe too clever for its own good?
gridoon20246 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Although I'm a big fan of movies with plot twists, there are occasions where these can go too far, to the point of negating everything that went on before and telling you that everything you just watched was a big lie. The 2003 film "Basic" falls into that category, and "Ca$h" follows the same path. The good side of this is that the film is almost entirely unpredictable; the bad side is that the whole incredibly elaborate plan of the true mastermind(s) at the end relies on the victim(s) doing EXACTLY what they are expected to do - one "wrong" move, and the whole plan would go to ruins. If you can live with that, the film is good-looking fluff; Valeria Golino, with a new, sophisticated hairstyle, looks as if she hasn't aged a day since "Hot Shots" back in the early 90's, and Alice Taglioni is sexy & tricky. Enjoyable Bilingual Caper Movie
l_rawjalaurence30 December 2014
Other reviewers have noticed the similarities between C$SH and OCEANS ELEVEN (2001) or OCEANS TWELVE (2004). To this list we might add some caper films of the Sixties, including the original OCEAN'S ELEVEN (1960) or Ronald Neame's GAMBIT (1966) and Peter Collinson's THE Italian JOB (1969).

All the familiar elements are here: exotic locations in Monaco as well as the south of France; sun-kissed beaches and luxury hotels; the deep azure blue of the Mediterranean; iconic cars; and a stellar cast clearly enjoying themselves with Éric Besnard's script.

The plot is basically irrelevant - suffice to say that small time conman Cash (Jean Dujardin) pits his wits against Mr. Big Maxime - Dubreuil (Jean Reno). It seems that Cash's endeavors are doomed to fail, as Maxime not only has power but wealth and guile as well. Cash teams up with enthusiastic police officer Julia (Valeria Golino), whose understanding of the difference between right and wrong appears tenuous at best, and together they set about trying to place a sting on Maxime. The action comes to a climax at a luxury seaside hotel, with the protagonists fighting to secure an attaché case full of expensive and unregistered diamonds.

Also involved in the gallimaufry are Ciarán Hinds and Joe Sheridan as a pair of native English speakers involved with the French police force; their grasp of both languages is highly competent - far more so than their professional abilities.

The effect of watching C$SH is rather like playing with a series of Chinese boxes; nothing is quite what it seems. The 'good' characters turn out to be corrupt' the 'bad' characters are not quite as black-hearted as we might first assume. But director Éric Besnard isn't much interested in morality; he invites us to admire the ingenuity of the various cons instituted by the various characters. This is a world where only the fittest - and the most astute - survive.

A highly enjoyable film, with a series of ingenious shot-structures (especially the use of split-screen techniques) recalling those days of the "Swinging Sixties" when everyone seemed so much more carefree than they do today.

Fun but pointless
paul2001sw-15 April 2016
Con-trick films are a well-worn genre: perhaps almost every one of them recalls 'The Sting', while the ending of 'Cash' brings to mind superior efforts like Mamet's 'House of Games' or my personal favourite, Fabian Bielinsky's 'Nine Queens'. But the particular story of a glamorous investigator on the trail of an equally glamorous criminal reminded me most of 'The Thomas Crown Affair', even before the use of split-screens, surely an act of intentional homage. The movie's glamorous portrayal of smoking also seemed like a gesture to another era. But unlike the best films of its type, there's no deep character study here. The film is entirely lightweight, and even has comedy music to underscore its critical moves. The result is fun and lavish, but also utterly shallow, and none of the developments really take you by surprise as nothing is really credible even before the under-layers are revealed. Even as a comedy-thriller, it's lacking substance and it's hard to care about any of the protagonists. It is mildly entertaining, but devoid of any deeper purpose, and there's really nothing here you won't have seen before.

French can nail it
meniek6413 September 2020
A very good, really fun and clever heist movie. And for those who keep comparing it to Ocean's-don't-know-which-number: it's far less glossy than its Hollywood counterparts but glossy enough for its genre. Jean Reno and Jean Dujardin have much more substance in their acting and they possess a European class that Hollywood actors like Clooney or Pitt (excellent as they might be) are missing. Accordingly Goino's and Taglioni's elegance and expressiveness have Zeta-Jones and Roberts just envying. Bref, a very enjoyable movie that's not pretending to be anything else than that.

Pretentious poppycock
richard_sleboe25 August 2008
"Cash" is a sad case of Paris playing Hollywood, and failing. The plot is a total "Ocean's Twelve" knock-off, with bits of "Heist" and "After the Sunset" tossed in. Also, Catherine Zeta-Jones was about a zillion times hotter as Europol power bitch Isabel Lahiri (than Valeria Golino in the near-identical part of a struggling international forgery investigator). Everyone else is even more forgettable, with the possible exception of Ciarán Hinds in the part of Julia's hard-headed boss. Jean Reno, who appears in the small part of the big counterfeit kahuna, must have owed someone a favor. Don't waste your time with this.

Ca$h in
YohjiArmstrong11 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
CA$H is a French con thriller that feels like it could have been made at any point in the last fifty years -- which is a good thing. The plot is nearly impossible to describe due to the many double crosses - and frankly it would be a shame to spoil it anyway - but suffice to say that it's about a con-man who sets out for vengeance on the person who murdered his brother. The cinematography and direction are a little unsure - not quite as slick as they want to be - but the many very good actors (some British) led by super-charmer Jean Dujardin and buttressed by several very pretty girls more than make up for it, as do the lovely locations in the South of France and the general old-fashioned charm of the piece. The plot changes course practically every ten minutes and even though, looking back, it's utterly unbelievable, it's still a lot of fun to watch.

crooks scamming other crooks
myriamlenys4 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Cash" serves as a showcase for some of the most famous and popular contemporary actors in Europe. The movie is long on style, entertainment and polish. The movie is short on depth, edge and relevance. Probably it's best watched and appreciated as an expertly made "divertissement". The escapist nature of the whole is underlined by the sequences set in a jaw-dropping luxury hotel for the very rich. Most of us are never going to come near a place like this, unless we discover a Degas in our attic or become the sex kitten of a Russian oligarch.

"Cash" contains some good jokes, with the best of them related to a posh charity event where benefactors can become "godparent" to an exotic animal.

The plot deals with more than a simple police-versus-criminals conflict, given that both the criminals (many of whom are professional scammers) and the police have split up in various rival factions. There's a lot of plotting and counter-plotting. There's also a lot of secret agendas and shifting alliances. It's all pretty convoluted, meaning that even the more attentive viewers may reach a point where they can no longer see the forest for the trees.

The most intriguing character and the most intriguing performance coincide in Valeria Golino playing a specialized police investigator who may be perfectionist, ambitious, naive, reckless, unscrupulous or any combination of the above.

Shameful Copy of ocean eleven
atala6717 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The music, the plot, the scenes (old man faking a heart attack...), the cast of characters, the fancy hotel, the revenge from a rival con artist ... reeks of the Ocean franchise. When did French cinema start being so complacent and disrespectful to the viewers?

Double-cross film about double-dealers has panache
donby-120 December 2008
A scam is afoot, but then there is a double-cross, triple-cross, quadruple-cross, etc. I found the film enjoyable, parts of it filmed inside some very posh hotels that you usually don't see in films.

Also, there are the Extremely Attractive three lead actors, very easy on the eyes.

Some of the critical reviewers seem to have been expecting Citizen Kane, which of course it isn't. But it's fun to try to differentiate the good guys from the bad guys. You won't be bored !

French films in the past have gotten a bad rap accused of being too "arty". This is certainly not true of this offering, whose purpose is only to entertain. Enjoy !

There are more heist movies in the world than Ocean11 - please stop comparing!
viktor_weimer1 September 2008
Apart from the numerous stylistic resemblances between "Ca$h" and the Ocean's 11/12/13 movies (funky music, editing pace, use of colorful light, etc.), you have to realize that this is a very different movie. Of course, if all you have seen in this genre is Ocean's 11, and you're easily distracted by style, then of course you draw parallels, and you might prefer the Ocean's movies.

This is, please let me emphasize this, this is NOT a heist movie! So don't expect a heist movie! This movie is more in the line of "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", in that it's filled with con artists, scams, twists, and a sometimes very comedic approach to all that.

Sure it could be better here and there, but it's a really nice feel good crime/(little bit of)heist/con movie, charming and entertaining, and I left the movie theater with a big grin.

Not perfect, but enjoyable.

Reno's own Ocean
kosmasp9 April 2009
A french caper movie, with a stellar cast. Enjoyable and kinda light, despite the criminal background of the movie. Of course you might see where this is going way before it actually gets revealed, but as with other movies, but as a saying goes: "The journey is its own reward" and it is true with this film here too.

The actors seemed to have great fun and you will have to, if you let yourself enjoy this crime caper, that has some of the finest contemporary and popular french actors in it. I did watch it at the Fantasy Filmfest in Stuttgart and was one of the few that liked it. Most thought it wasn't anything special or new, but that wasn't the point in my view. So just sit back, relax and enjoy (if you can and are able to)

Excellent crime caper
gailafield26 March 2009
I just saw this at the French Film Festival and thought it was excellent - no way I could foresee the ending. OK there's a lot of twists and turns but in the end it was all well done and well thought out. I would like to see it again now that I know the ending to figure it all out. Personally I liked it and anyone who says that Julia Molina is not hot must be blind (ref: a previous commentator), especially in that fantastic evening gown she wears. I like the Jean Dujardin's easy style and charm and all the cast were great. I wasn't used to actually seeing Jean Reno speaking in his native tongue! All in all, a great watch if you don't like your films predictable.
