Ever since Disney's announcement of the long awaited and not so far, far away "Star Wars" sequel trilogy starting with "Episode VII" in 2015, there's been a flurry of excitement, mostly from folks wondering what a follow-up to "Return of the Jedi" will look like three decades after the fact.
Some couldn't wait to see what the Mouse House has in store for the "Star Wars" franchise, and these artistically inclined ambassadors to the nerd community have put forth their own forceful visions of George Lucas' universe. We've collected the best of this fan art, some of which is truly awesome, some of it chuckle-worthy, in many cases both.
Original Trilogy Trio
Although original stars Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher have yet to officially board "Episode VII," in the minds of die-hard fans, they're already signed, sealed and delivered.

Today more cast members were announced for the upcoming Kanjani8 movie, The Eight Rangers, directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi. Most notably, Becky will play a female detective and Noriyuki Higashiyama will play a villain for the first time in his career.
Kanjani8 is a boy band under Johnny & Associates that made their CD debut in 2004. Partly due to the numeric significance of this year marking their eighth anniversary, a movie version of the sentai parody the group performs at concerts was announced early last month.
Higashiyama will be playing the leader of a terrorist organization called “Dark Crusade”. For his first attempt at playing a villain, he reportedly drew inspiration from Gary Oldman’s character in Luc Besson’s 1994 film Léon while still trying to maintain his own style.

This isn’t exactly new news this as we covered its release in Japan a few months back, but as an added bonus we have just turned up an English subtitled version of the trailer for Japanese action pic K-20. It’s due for release in Singapore (hence the subs) in Febuary, which has the added bonus of helping the chances of an English friendly DVD sometime soon. Directed by Shimako Sato the pic stars Takeshi Kaneshiro (Red Cliff) & Takako Matsu (Hero). For those that missed it, here’s the plotline again.

- Excuse me while I mop up my brains because my head just went kaboom. Jason Gray of Screen Daily broke word today that Franco-Vietnamese auteur Anh Hung Tran will adapt world-renowned Japanese author Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood for the big screen. First published in 1987, the novel is a nostalgic rumination told through the eyes of college student Toru, a listless drama major who floats through life and relationships in a haze of melancholy. Set in the turbulent ‘60s, when political and social unrest was the order of the day, Murakami takes a hard view on the period as he juxtaposes Toru’s disengaged nature against largely misguided student movement. 8.7 million copies have been sold in Japan alone and it has been translated in 36 languages. Known for his emotionally complex tales of desire and loss, Murakami, who’s style is heavily influenced by the West, is Japan’s most highly regarded author.

TOKYO -- The film adaptation of the local TV hit Hero has taken the Japanese boxoffice by storm, opening Saturday on a record-breaking 475 screens and earning ¥1.08 billion ($9.4 million) over the weekend.
Distributor Toho said that about 750,000 people saw the big-screen debut of the Fuji Television Network series, but that figure might have been even higher had the country not been recovering from the impact of a major typhoon.
With a per-screen average of $19,790, Toho predicts Hero will surpass ¥10 billion in earnings and has a chance of being the highest-earning title in Japan this year.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End presently holds the top spot, with a gross of ¥11 billion.
The film has benefited enormously from the presence of Takuya Kimura, a member of the popular boy band SMAP, who plays the lead role of unconventional public prosecutor Kohei Kuryu.
Hero was initially a TV drama in 2001, quickly becoming the most-watched series in Japanese history, with an average viewer share of more than 34%.

TOKYO -- Two of Asia's biggest male stars will be shoulder-to-shoulder on the set of Hero now that South Korean star Lee Byung Hun has signed up to appear alongside Takuya Kimura in the theatrical version of the Fuji Televison Network hit.
Hero, produced by Fuji's film arm, grew out of a hugely popular miniseries about an unconventional public prosecutor played by Kimura. The show was a ratings monster, earning a 34.3% audience share when it first aired in 2001. A two-hour special in 2006 was equally well received.
Fuji is clearly attempting to spread the appeal of the title to other Asian nations and has guaranteed impressive sales in South Korea by setting the story in both countries and casting local hero Lee as a public prosecutor in the port city of Pusan.
Filming is currently under way with Masayuki Suzuki at the helm. The title will be released in September.
"Since we were set on shooting part of the film on location in South Korea, we felt it was important that we cast opposite Kimura a South Korean actor with a commanding presence and charisma," a Fuji TV spokesman said.
