Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we have a conversation about what it means to be underappreciated. Not underrated necessarily. But underappreciated. And, boy, is Don Cheadle underappreciated. The Oscar-nominated actor has been elevating films in supporting roles since the late ‘80s.
Our guest today is Mitchell Beaupre, senior editor at Letterboxd.
Our B-Sides today include: The Assassination of Richard Nixon, Traitor, The Guard, and No Sudden Move. There is also a brief-but-worthwhile tangent on the Scott Caan-directed (!) indie The Dog Problem. Also the Sundance darling Manic from the early 2000s.
We discuss Cheadle’s incredible ability to listen as an actor. There may not be a better active listener working today. We offer some context into legend Steve Martin (who...

There are many lessons to be gleaned from Season Two of The Traitors, Peacock’s smash hit reality TV competition based on the parlor game Mafia: 1) that you should never drink from an ominous-looking rusty chalice, particularly if it has been offered to you by a notoriously cutthroat former Survivor contestant; 2) that virtually everyone looks cool in emerald-green velvet cloaks; and 3) that Peacock has an insanely high budget for both breakfast pastries and Alan Cumming’s headgear.

A 20-year-old BBC gameshow that bears striking resemblance to smash hit The Traitors has emerged online.
Yesterday, the Back the BBC Twitter account posted a YouTube video of a BBC series from 2004 titled Traitor, hosted by presenter Tony Livesey, in which contestants sit in a circle and try and figure out who the dishonest ‘traitors’ are to win a cash prize.
The BBC and Idtv, the Dutch producer of recent smash hit The Traitors, were taken by surprise by the emergence of this 20-year-old gameshow.
Traitor aired several episodes on the BBC in 2004. One of the former contestants, Pete Liggins, commented on X that the show was being considered as a replacement for The Weakest Link in the late afternoon slot but “I guess cost too much/was too complicated a production in comparison.”

Last week on “The Voice,” Team John Legend took the stage during the playoffs as all six contestants performed for a shot at making it into the live shows. In the end, three of John’s artists advanced to the next round: Mac Royals, Lila Forde and Azán. That meant the other three singers — Kristen Brown, Kaylee Shimizu and Taylor Deneen — were all eliminated.
Gold Derby asked “The Voice” fans to vote in our poll for which of these three was most robbed, and the results are overwhelmingly strong for Kaylee. She scored a whopping 82% of the vote, compared to just 10% for Kristen and 8% for Taylor. Do You agree or disagree with those poll results? Be sure to sound off down in the comments section.

Tuesday night during “The Playoffs” on NBC’s “The Voice,” John Legend was faced with the tough decision of cutting down his six-person team to only three aspiring singers. In the end, he chose to keep Mac Royals, Lila Forde and Azán, which meant Kristen Brown, Kaylee Shimizu and Taylor Deneen were all sent home. (Talk about a bloodbath!) So which of Team Legend’s three eliminated artists do You think was most robbed in “The Voice” Playoffs? Vote in our poll below.
“Mac, Lila and Azan — each of them knows who they are, and their stage presence is very assured, like they belong in this moment,” John declared at the end of the hour. “They’re real artists, and I’m excited to take them to the lives.” It’s been a while since a Team Legend artist has won “The Voice”. Can someone on this new team now prevail in Season 24? Stay tuned.

Needless to say, Noah was beyond thrilled to see Olivia singing his popular song.

Los Angeles, June 19 (Ians) The Israeli espionage thriller ‘Trust No One’ is set to have its world premiere at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival.
It marries the pedigree and primetime polish of past series like ‘Traitor’ and ‘Valley of Tears’ with techno-anxieties tied to the here-and-now, specifically with regard to the security state and modern cyber warfare, reports Variety.
“Israel has become one of the largest global exporters of spy ware,” said co-creator Daniel Amsel. “Only, those technological weapons can undermine democracy and lead to the death of truth. So we wanted to thread those very sensitive topics into an entertaining and fast-paced thriller that deals with the loneliness of leadership and the difficulties of parenthood, among other themes.”

Cannes — Burgeoning Israeli film-tv studio Sipur and cable channel Hot, behind the original versions of “In Treatment” and “Euphoria,” are introducing at MipTV “Everybody Loves…,” a new global dating reality format.
The news comes just days after France’s Mediawan Rights has pounced on international distribution of another Sipur format, “Hungry for Love,” and partners Sipur and MGM’s winning five Israeli Emmy Awards for chilling doc series “The Devil’s Confession: The Lost Eichmann Tapes.”
Tel Aviv-based Sipur has also moved into post on “Bad Boy,” a scripted series from Ron Leshem, creator of the original Israeli “Euphoria” and an exec producer on its U.S version.
All these moves mark further signs of growth at Sipur, driven by CEO Emilio Schenker. Formerly Tadmor Entertainment until its rebranding last July, it is quickly emerging as one of Israel’s fastest-growing film-tv studios, playing off unique international relationships, led by a first-look production-distribution deal with MGM,...

The most recent arrived on Friday night, as the 19-year-old pop star was photographed leaving Electric Lady Studio in New York City.
Rodrigo was rocking a pleated red plaid miniskirt showing off plenty of leg and a bedazzled black t-shirt with cap sleeves. On her feet, she had black combat boots, adding to her pop-punk look.
The singer also had several long braids done in her hair, with one visibly falling down her side in one of the photos (below).
She carried a small black bag with her, which she clutched by her side as she walked down the street.

SEEVMAs announce social category nominees including BTS, Blackpink, Beyonce …
We’re betting on Taylor Swift to go three-for-three in the categories we’re forecasting: Video of the Year, Best Long Form Video, and Best Direction, all for the short film she directed to accompany her 10-minute extended version of “All Too Well.” If we’re right about the top category, Swift would make history as the first artist ever to win Video of the Year three times. Unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you are probably confident in Olivia Rodrigo winning this. Her meteoric rise to fame has been almost unmatched. She scored one of the biggest albums of the year with “Sour,” which includes four top 10 hits: “Traitor,” “Deja Vu,” “Drivers License,” and “Good 4 U,” the last two of which were number-one hits. “Drivers License” alone was a big pop culture moment of 2021, going as far as to inspire a “Saturday Night Live” sketch, and she was even...

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
Star Wars villain Asajj Ventress remains one of the most popular characters introduced in the Clone Wars era, but she’s missing from The Clone Wars season 7. With the animated series coming to an end, fans might be wondering what happened to this fan-favorite baddie and why she’s not in the final season. Fortunately, this is a plot thread that Lucasfilm did address, but not in the TV series.
Faced with the strangest and most important choice in her life, Asajj Ventress gets one last Clone Wars adventure in Dark Disciple, a novel by Christie Golden built from unaired episodes from the original run of the show. The novel also represents an interesting time in the show’s history.
While The Clone Wars originally went off the air in 2013 after five seasons on Cartoon Network, the animated series found new life on Netflix...

Year-end conversations about the movies are often dominated by top 10 lists from critics who spend the year watching movies. But they aren’t the only ones. Many of the most influential people responsible for getting movies out into the world are toiling away behind the scenes, whether they’re assembling venerated film festival lineups or acquiring and distributing some of the most revered films of the year.
Each year, IndieWire reaches out to a range of figures from the independent film community to give them the opportunity to single out some of their favorite movies from the past 12 months. This year’s respondents include programmers, publicists, and distribution executives. Provided with a flexible criteria for their lists, participants singled out a range of media — from television to theater and beyond — providing a unique window into the way many of the movers and shakers in film culture experienced the year as a whole.

The European Film Academy has unveiled its nominations for the 32nd European Film Awards with the ceremony to be held December 7 in Berlin. Among the titles to figure in the races, three are tied with four mentions each including Roman Polanski’s An Officer And A Spy, Pedro Almodovar’s Pain And Glory and Marco Bellocchio’s The Traitor. The latter two are also the Oscar representatives from their respective Spain and Italy and give Sony Pictures Classics a combined eight nods at the EFAs.
While Polanski remains a controversial figure, there has been a divide between U.S. and Euro perspectives in the #MeToo era. His Dreyfus Affair drama, An Officer And A Spy, which also has Efa nominations for Director, Actor and Screenwriter, was one of the most contested titles at the Venice Film Festival where it debuted earlier this year. It went on to win the Grand Jury Prize there.

Marco Bellocchio’s film bagged seven prizes from the Italian film journalists, including Best Film and Best Director, while Leonardo D’Agostini and Valerio Mastandrea scooped Best Debut Directors. It really was Marco Bellocchio’s night on Saturday in Taormina’s Teatro Antico. The Traitor, the Piacenza-born director’s film on the subject of Tommaso Buscetta, which debuted in competition in Cannes this year and already triumphed at the Italian Golden Globes just a few days ago (read our news), was handed no less than seven awards (out of 11 nomination) by the Sngci – National Union of Film Journalists: Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Score, Best Actor (Pierfrancesco Favino) and Best Supporting Actor (Luigi Lo Cascio and Fabrizio Ferracane). In terms of the reigning women, Italy’s film journalists named Anna Foglietta and Marina Confalone best actresses, while...
For the first time ever, FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story” has been submitted on the Emmy ballot as a drama and not as a limited series. That’s because of a recent Emmy rule stating that since this particular installment, “Ahs: Apocalypse,” featured continuing storylines and characters from both “Ahs: Coven” and “Ahs: Murder House,” then it couldn’t compete as a limited series. The cable network is now hoping that the Emmy switcheroo will pay off for 19 of its performers, as that’s the number of actors and actresses that have been submitted on the 2019 ballot.

Master filmmaker Marco Bellocchio returns to Cannes (he was last there for 2016’s Sweet Dreams – a Directors’ Fortnight entry) for what will be his sixth trip to Palme d’Or comp. Dating back to A Leap in the Dark (1980), he has been there with 1984’s Henry IV, 1997’s The Prince of Homburg, 1999’s The Nanny, 2002’s My Mother’s Smile and 2009’s Vincere. The Traitor looks to see him continue with exploring what lurks behind the scenes with a look at one person who breaks the code of silence.

Led by “Bacurau,” directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, and Marco Bellocchio’s “The Traitor,” both playing Cannes competition, Brazil has five movies selected for this year’s Cannes, seven if including Acid, the best result in living memory. It also makes Brazil Cannes’ fourth-biggest national cinema presence, after France (46 productions), the U.S. (11) and Belgium (nine).
One more title can be partly chalked up to Brazil: Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse,” produced by Rodrigo Teixeira at Sao Paulo-based Rt Features, which, extraordinarily enough, also has “The Invisible Life” and “Port Authority” in Un Certain Regard.
Yet most of these selections came on April 18, the same day that Christian de Castro, head of Brazil’s all-powerful film-tv agency head Ancine, recommended staff to halt new and recently approved incentive awards, in a memorandum leaked to the press.
Ancine contributes some $300 million a year into Brazil’s film-tv industries.

Films from a number of big-name returning auteurs – including Xavier Dolan, Pedro Almodovar, Terrence Malick, Bong Joon-ho and Ken Loach – appear to have a lock on competing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, making for a stronger and starrier lineup than last year’s slate, sources tell Variety.
Dolan’s “Matthias & Maxime” (in which he stars), Almodovar’s self-reflective “Pain & Glory” and two-time Palme d’Or winner Loach’s “Sorry We Missed You” are set to join Jim Jarmusch’s previously announced opening film, “The Dead Don’t Die,” in competition, sources say. Other high-profile Cannes alumni who appear poised to return in competition include Malick, with his World War II drama “A Hidden Life” (previously titled “Radegund”); Bong, with “Parasite”; Marco Bellocchio, with his Mafia thriller “Traitor”; Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, with “Ahmed,” a look at religious fundamentalism in Europe; and Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho,...

Keanu Reeves plays a doctor at an experimental research facility in the amusingly unconvincing “Replicas,” which is set in a Puerto Rico that looks like it has sustained no damage at all from Hurricane Maria, a visual decision that suits the totally unrealistic movie.
Reeves’ Will Foster is first seen waiting for a donated brain that is being brought to him via helicopter, and director Jeffrey Nachmanoff (“Traitor”) cross-cuts between Reeves anxiously staring at his watch and the brain being rushed into the facility. During an operation to place this brain into a robot body, Dr. Foster is asked, “Do you concur?” by a colleague and Reeves cries, “I concur!” in that ineffably stilted but enthusiastic Keanu-ish way.
Dr. Foster plays Dr. Frankenstein with this robot, urging it to relax once its brain has been turned on; the robot freaks out and tears itself apart, but nevertheless, Foster is encouraged.

When Adina Porter first signed on to “American Horror Story: Apocalypse,” she was told her character, Dinah Stevens, was a “self-made billionaire like Oprah.” And while that certainly proved to be true — Dinah was a wildly successful talk show host before the events that led to the end of the world and her taking refuge in the Outpost 3 bunker — it was just one layer to a complicated woman.
“Dinah is a chameleon and she becomes whoever she needs to become for whoever her employer happens to be, whether it’s a rich Beverly Hills socialite or Papa Legba,” Porter tells Variety.
The seventh episode of “Apocalypse,” titled “Traitor,” revealed that Dinah’s drive came heavily from her roots as a voodoo priestess.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Traitor,” the seventh episode of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.”
It was always going to be hard for “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” to top the returns of Jessica Lange, Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott last week — and this week struggled a bit to meet that level of excitement. Fortunately, they saved a couple of other fun returns for “Traitor,” plus added some satisfying deaths and leaned hard into the idea that Mallory (Billie Lourd) is the next Supreme.
After Madison (Emma Roberts) reported back to the coven about her findings at Murder House, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) decided they needed to take any available resource in order to stop the antichrist (Cody Fern) from becoming the new Supreme. So she tracked down Dinah Stevens (Adina Porter), a voodoo practitioner who took her to see Papa Legba (Lance Reddick).

The only thing that seems absolutely certain in American Horror Story: Apocalypse is that Michael Langdon is really, truly powerful and evil. What more would we expect from the actual Antichrist? After all the horrible things he does - or probably has done - it doesn't seem like there could possibly be any path to redemption for Michael. Reddit user masonfrelsari, however, has a different idea.
Spoiler : Theory about Madison and Michael. from r/AmericanHorrorStory
Could you believe that Michael could ever turn away from evil? Let's break this theory down and you can decide for yourself.
Essentially, this theory suggests that Madison could go back in time to change Michael's future from childhood onwards. It hinges on the technical aspects of Michael being the Antichrist: the idea that he is half-spirit or demonic from his ghostly father and half-human from his human mother, which makes him the "son" of Satan.

Madrid — Omar Zuñiga’s “Los Fuertes,’ Sebastián Muñoz’s “The Prince” and Carlos Piñeiro’s “Sirena” have been selected for the 34th, twice-yearly, Films in Progress, a Latin American pix-in-post competition which runs Sept.24-26 at Spain’s San Sebastián Festival, representing one of the event’s biggest industry attractions for arthouse sales agents and distributors.
Strong on co-productions – a reflection if the bi-lateral and minority co-production funds in place in Brazil, Argentina and Chile – this year’s selection packs five first features – six if you count Argentine Nicolas Savignone’s prior “Los desechables” as a medium-feature – a reminder of the hordes of filmmakers pouring out of film schools in Latin America, powering up production levels dramatically over the last decade.

Most of the cast and crew of “The Shape of Water” were on hand for the film’s Best Picture Oscar win, but one person was noticeably absent: Michael Shannon. Where was he? In a dive bar in Chicago watching the show on mute.
Shannon closed a production of Brett Neveu’s “Traitor” at A Red Orchid’s Theatre in the Windy City on Oscar Sunday and unwound at Chicago’s famed Old Town Ale House. Bruce Elliott, the bar’s owner and artist behind the bar’s quirky celebrity paintings, tweeted a photo of the actor — clad in a winter jacket with a beer in hand and sporting a ‘stache — watching the credits roll on the screen after “The Shape of Water”’s win.

When “The Shape of Water” was named Best Picture at Sunday’s Academy Awards, Sally Hawkins, Doug Jones, Octavia Spencer, Richard Jenkins, and Michael Stuhlbarg followed their director, Guillermo del Toro, onstage (watch below). Absent was their co-star Michael Shannon, who many thought deserved his third chance at Best Supporting Actor for playing the villain in this year’s most-nominated film. But Shannon wasn’t home sulking over his lack of a nod — his art kept him more than a thousand miles from Hollywood.
Oscar night coincided with the final performance of Brett Neveu’s “Traitor” at Chicago’s A Red Orchid Theatre, where the play ran for seven weeks. Shannon directed the production, for the theater company he co-founded in his late teens. Rogen will play an out-of-work journalist who decides to pursue his childhood crush (Theron). The biggest obstacle? She is now "powerful and unattainable." [THR] Five Against a Bullet: Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor, above right with Don Cheadle) will direct the action thriller Five Against a Bullet. The sequel to “John Wick” has been in the works since 2015 and sees several of the actors from the first film return, including Ian McShane (“Deadwood”), John Leguizamo (“Carlito’s Way”) and Lance Reddick (“The Wire”), among others. Stahelski directed the sequel based on a script from Kolstad.

Actor Keanu Reeves may have been the butt of a lot of jokes back when the Matrix Trilogy wrapped up, but if there's an actor who's learn to cater his roles to his strengths, it's him. The 2014 film John Wick managed to bring just the perfect amount of stoicism and badassery to the title character to make it fall squarely in his range.
Now it sounds like another Keanu Reeves vehicle has just started production, namely the film Replicas. This isn't the first we'd heard of this. The film was first announced back in October of 2014, but since that time has pretty much disappeared from the public eye. It's unclear why it was stalled for so long, but today, Remstar Studios announced they would be co-financing the flick with Riverstone Pictures (via Coming Soon).

From Dumb & Dumber and The Martian, through to Arachnophobia and Steve Jobs - we salute the screen work of Jeff Daniels...
They say that when you play the Game of Thrones, “you win or you die”. The Game of Jeff Daniels, however, is an undeniably different beast and for the most part is a definite “you win or you win”. After viewing dozens of Jeff Daniels movies and spending many, many hours with his on-screen personas, it’s fair to say that the maxim has been sorely tested but guess what? It still holds true. This list has been carefully curated to celebrate the veteran actor’s talent, versatility and wit and no matter which (if any) of these movies you decide to revisit or check out for the first time, Jeff is guaranteed to give you something to love in each and every one.

Following the recent Wonder Woman villain details, we have our first couple of images from the set of the Patty Jenkins-directed DC Comics adaptation. These type of pics usually come from outside sources, but this time they were actually posted by a member of the cast: Saïd Taghmaoui (La Haine, Traitor, G.I. Joe : Rise Of Cobra, Three Kings), who added the images to his Instagram page. We had no idea Taghmaoui was even in the movie, but here he is decked out in Wwi garb, alongside Chris Pine as Steve Trevor.
Obviously the snaps confirm that at least part of the movie will be set during World War I, but they also strongly indicate that Steve Trevor will be a fixture of the past only, and won’t be around to fight alongside Diana in the present day. So, unless there’s going...
