Xavier Dolan's I Killed My Mother edged out Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique, claiming the top prize and collecting a total of five trophies, beating Villeneuve's film by one. Since Cannes last May, both films have been pitted against each other: while Villeneuve's film had the edge on the Quebecois box office front and received acclaim at Canada's Oscars (Genies), it was the debut film from Dolan that overwhelmed audiences on a global level, winning at several film festivals including three in Cannes - Xavier Dolan's I Killed My Mother edged out Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique, claiming the top prize and collecting a total of five trophies, beating Villeneuve's film by one. This afternoon, the nominees for the Jutra Award, Quebec's own Oscars, were announced. Unlike last year, there are two new things that we should expect to see. The first one being that the jury will be formed by 18 people. Secondly, all members of the jury have seen the films that are nominated. Besides, the host of evening will be Patrice L'Écuyer and the ceremony will take place at La Tohu on March 28. Also note that the Jutra Award will be broadcasted live on Radio-Canada. Anyway, the following is the list of nominees.

A couple years back Quebecois director Erik Canuel made a big splash here in Canada with his action comedy Bon Cop, Bad Cop, a film that skewered language relations here in Canada but did so in such an engaging way that it became a huge hit not only in his native Quebec but also across English speaking Canada - a rare occurrence since Canadian films hardly ever get significant theatrical releases in the English speaking territories of the country and French Canadian films even less so. And now Canuel is back, with his latest feature - the much darker, but still comedic Cadavres - due to release in February.
Cadavres is a tragicomedy about the deadly feelings that unite a brother and sister who have nothing in common. Raymond is a jealous, misanthropic couch potato. Angèle is a sexy TV starlet, childish and disillusioned. One Halloween, their mother, Solange, suddenly dies.

Toronto -- Canadian distributor Seville Pictures has received court permission to acquire the domestic rights to 27 films from a reorganizing Christal Films.
The Quebec Superior Court on Friday approved a bid from Montreal-based Seville to take over the distribution contracts to the Christal titles, which include Kim Nguyen's "Truffe," which bows Aug. 22, Philippe Falardeau's "C'est pas moi je le jure," Erik Canuel's "Cadavres" and Jaco van Dormel's "Mr. Nobody," which stars Diane Kruger, Jared Leto and Sarah Polley.
In May, Christal Films secured court protection from its creditors after losing a sublicensing deal for the Quebec market with Maple Pictures and Lionsgate.
Terms of the deal, which will enlarge Seville's share of the Quebec distribution market compared with Alliance Vivafilm, were not disclosed.
