Hardly 24 hours after she teamed up with The Roots for a killer cover of Portishead’s “Glory Box” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, St. Vincent took on David Bowie’s “Young Americans” Thursday night during the star-studded Love Rocks NYC benefit concert at New York City’s Beacon Theatre.
The night was a whole a who’s-who of performers: James Taylor, Mavis Staples, Sheryl Crow, Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo, Warren Haynes, the John Mayer Trio, Rufus Wainwright, Gary Clark Jr., Jim James, Ledisi, Allison Russell, The War and Treaty, and former Yankee Bernie Williams all took the stage throughout the evening.
Aside from St. Vincent, a few standout performances include Benatar doing “Love Is a Battlefield,” Taylor singing “How Sweet It Is,” Staples dusting off Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself,” and Russell honoring the late Christine McVie with a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop.” St. Vincent...

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon had a pretty stellar musical moment last night when St. Vincent teamed up with house band The Roots to cover Portishead’s classic “Glory Box.” Watch the performance below.
Covering a song as unforgettable as “Glory Box” is certainly no easy task, but St. Vincent does Portishead justice with her faithful rendition. She doesn’t do too much to tweak the source material — why mess with perfection? — but the sultry sheen and electric guitar flourishes are right up St. Vincent’s alley. If you weren’t already convinced Portishead were ahead of their time, here’s some more proof.
“Glory Box” appears on Portishead’s 1994 debut album Dummy. The trip-hop pioneers have been largely defunct for the last decade, but they reunited last year to perform at a Ukraine benefit concert alongside Idles, Katy J Pearson, and Heavy Lungs.
St. Vincent loves a cover.

St. Vincent returned to The Tonight Show stage Wednesday night to cover the perennially chill “Glory Box” by English electronic band Portishead. The performance comes ahead of St. Vincent’s appearance at Love Rocks NYC’s God’s Love We Deliver livestream tonight.
The singer was joined by house band the Roots for an expectedly emotional rendition of the hit 1995 song. “Give me a reason to be a woman,” she sang, “I just want to be a woman,” before playing a Hendrix-y, wah-wah-drenched guitar solo. Throughout, she tapped into...

St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark, made a special appearance on The Late Show in host Stephen Colbert’s house band. The musician took the opportunity to publicly urge the Dallas Cowboys to book her to perform the National Anthem at a future game.
“You are a proud daughter of Dallas, is this not true?” Colbert asked St. Vincent. She confirmed, “I am, in fact, from Dallas, Texas, yes.”
Colbert then asked her to “sell me on Dallas,” explaining that he has never been. “Is it the brisket? Is it the Cowboys?...

Canadian director Daniel Roby (Funkytown) will write and direct the upcoming film Hell.com. The latter is based on a best-selling novel by Patrick Senécal.
In an exclusive article, the newspaper La Presse also added that the film will be produced by Nicole Robert. This producer has adapted into films other novels by Patrick Senécal.
She turned into films Sur le seuil and Les sept jours du talion.
Obviously, a third novel of Patrick Senécal has also been made into a film, which means 5150, rue des Ormes.
Once the first draft of Hell.com's script is over, it will be sent to Téléfilm Canada and the Sodec, which are respectively a cinematographic funding agency from Canada and Quebec.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? También la lluvia (Even The Rain) Trailer Director, and native Spaniard, Icíar Bollaín certainly has picked someone unique to talk about the Bolivian Cochabamba water...

Has there ever been a period more friendly towards dance-themed films than right now? Maybe for a brief period in the seventies or in the era of big musicals but what we're seeing now is something entirely different. And we've got two very different projects coming soon from Quebec.
Set in the disco clubs of 1976 Montreal, Daniel Roby's Funkytown is all glitz and glitter and sexual freedom. That is until things get dark and the guns come out. This is the dark, sultry side of things - a dance film for adults very clearly meant to be in the mold of Saturday Night Fever and it would appear that Roby and his cast have the chops to pull it off.
On the other side of the spectrum is Sur Le Rythme, a hip hop dance feature in the vein of the Step Up movies clearly aimed straight at the young teen audience.

From the author of Mambo Italiano, comes the World Premiere of a light-hearted and hilariouscomedy about love, lust and misunderstandings, inspired by Feydeau, Goldoni and Sophia Loren.
It's a burning hot August in Naples, 1952 - "earthquake weather", and the citizens of Piazza San Domenico are all stirred up when Carmelina Benevento (Christina Broccolini) suddenly faints upon hearing some bad news about her fiancé, Guido (Guido Cocomello). A series of conspicuous sightings between people provoke gossip.
Misinterpretations ensue as The Players contrive their own schemesand desperately try to keep face. But love and earth tremors have a way of setting things straight! Playwright, Steve Galluccio is a three-time Gemini Award-winning writer whose career started in Montreal's vibrant underground theatre scene. Galluccio burst into "legit" theatre in 2000 with his breakthrough work, Mambo Italiano which was translated into French by Michel Tremblay.
An astounding hit in both French and English, the play has...
