The summer movie season tends to be thought of as a big, vast, noisy, expensive parade — a monolith of fun. The movies, before they come out, have an aura of invincibility. Most of them have been designed to be rockets to the other side of the box-office rainbow, and each week, when another rocket or two (or three) gets launched, the grosses cast their own aura: “Look, up in the air! It’s a smash! It’s a winner! It’s Superhit!” The breathless ritual reporting of those weekend tallies reflects something much deeper than the fact that people are obsessed with Hollywood accounting.

I'll give it to the Log Cabin Republicans, they have been persistent and successful fighting Don't Ask, Don't Tell, and yesterday they scored a victory by having the stay of the judgment blocking enforcement lifted, halting any and all discharges under the policy, unless President Obama appeals.
Should we be counting it as a victory that the National Enquirer is gossiping about gay celebrities just like any other? Because now they're reporting that Lance Bass is marrying Lorenzo Martone with Justin Timberlake as his best man.
The 2018 Winter Olympics will be held in Pyeongchang, disappointing my copy editors immensely, because they know I'll never be able to spell that consistently. It's also bad news for NBC, who owns the TV rights to something they won't be able to air live due to the time difference.
The National Organization for Marriage has been told yet again, this time in Minnesota, that...

Written by: Melanie Finn
Narrated by: Miranda Richardson
Nature documentarian Nick Stringer takes audiences on an aquatic adventure through the experiences of one loggerhead turtle, beginning with her hatching on the Florida shoreline. “Turtle: The Incredible Journey” opens with brilliant sunlight, the rush of the ocean waves and the newborn turtle scrambling toward the sea to escape predators that pounce moments after her birth. With the roar of a massive swell, she is swept into the blue tide and begins her journey.
The loggerhead turtle is an extraordinary creature that is slowly going extinct. It has one of the longest quests in the natural world, and Stringer’s film captures all of it. From the Florida shorelines of her birth, viewers follow her as she rides the Gulf Stream north, to African isles and ultimately back to the beaches in Florida.

"Cars 2, directed (like several great Pixar films of the last two decades) by John Lasseter, finds itself in the unlucky position of the not-so-bright kid in a brilliant family," finds Slate's Dana Stevens. "No matter if his performance in school is comfortably average; he'll always be seen as a disappointment compared to his stellar siblings. There's nothing really objectionable about Cars 2, although parents of young children should be warned that a few evil vehicles meet violently inauspicious ends. It's sweet-spirited, visually delightful (if aurally cacophonous), and it will make for a pleasant enough family afternoon at the movies. But we've come to expect so much more than mere pleasantness from Pixar that Cars 2 feels almost like a betrayal."
Nick Schager for the Voice: "Pixar's Cars franchise takes a sharp turn from Nascar mayhem and rural red-state-targeted 50s nostalgia to 007 espionage with this upgraded sequel, though in its...

The blockbuster sequels continue this weekend with the release of Cars 2, a movie that is guaranteed to make boatloads of cash but appears to be Pixar's first real critical failure. Normally it would be foolish to open another major release on the same day as a Pixar movie, but Sony is taking a chance with their R-rated comedy Bad Teacher and it just might pay off for them. However, if it's laughs you're looking for this weekend, I seriously doubt anything will beat the hilarious documentary Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, which is now playing in select theatres. Also in limited release we have Chris Weitz's indie drama A Better Life, the experimental art film General Orders No. 9, and the majestically titled nature documentary Turtle: The Incredible Journey. What will you be watching this weekend? Cars 2 [1] Bad Teacher [2] Beginning of the Great Revival [3] (limited) Conan O'Brien Can't Stop...

Title: Turtle: The Incredible Journey Director: Nick Stringer Two hundred million years ago, turtles were exclusively creatures of the land. Though their ancestors were driven into the oceans by the predatory prowess of dinosaurs, even today loggerhead turtles retain the unusual practice of birthing their young on the beach, setting the scene for one of the most amazing and improbable stories of new life on Earth. Narrated by Miranda Richardson, director Nick Stringer’s Turtle: The Incredible Journey charts this fascinating tale, and does so in a fashion as visually captivating as it is informative. The product of more than two years of filming, Turtle opens on a beach in Florida, where we witness...

It's no secret round these parts that documentaries that tackle the trials and tribulations of wild animals send me into an emotional tizzy (see Born To Be Wild 3D or African Cats for examples of such tizzi-ness). But despite the heart-rending wallops that often accompany such films, I can't get away from them and their often very important messages about the brutality of nature, the beauty of the world, and the need for conservation efforts. Which leads me to Turtle: The Incredible Journey. Following a tiny loggerhead turtle from birth to her own egg-laying, Turtle is, truly, about an incredible journey. This trailer alone will floor you with its scope and the daunting task that faces all loggerheads. Yes, it made me tear up.

Turtle: The Incredible Journey is an award-winning documentary that follows the life and migration of a loggerhead turtle from hatching to maturity and a return to its original Florida nesting grounds . 25 years later!
The loggerhead turtle, a threatened species, has one of the longest and most difficult migratory patterns of any marine animal: Sea turtles newly hatched on the East Coast of the United States (usually in Florida) make their way from the sand into the ocean, and then begin a voyage that can span the entire Atlantic Ocean, only to return decades later to that same beach.
Award-winning filmmaker Nick Stringer follows the loggerhead turtle on an adventure of more than 9,000 miles guided only by instinct. Stringer and his camera crew spent two years following loggerhead turtles on their trips across the ocean, and have captured on film the remarkable life cycle of a beautiful creature that struggles to...
