Primeval: #1.6 starts as Helen Cutter (Juliet Aubrey) contacts Stephen (James Murray) with vital information about an anomaly, she says she wants to meet up with Nick (Douglas Henshall) & the home office people Claudia (Lucy Brown) & Lester (Ben Miller). Everyone agrees & Helen says that an anomaly has opened but instead of the past it's a gateway to the future & a grotesque creature has come through, a creature which needs to kill to feed & has no problems using us humans as it's food source. However that's not the only problem it's presence causes as since it came from the future it has the ability to change the present & past & alter history in a very unpleasant way...
The sixth & final episode from the first season of this made-for-British TV sci-fi adventure series was directed by Jamie Payne & is another decent way to pass 45 minutes but isn't anything special or particularly memorable. The script by Adrian Hodges follows the same sort of pattern as the previous five episodes in that it seems to rip-off it's central premise from a big budget Hollywood flick & in this case it would appear to be top action/horror/sci-fi film Predator (1987) which Primeval #1.6 seems to 'borrow' from. From the ugly superior predator to the fact it hunts humans to the fact that it can camouflage in any environment to the fact that it 'sees' in a silly blue toned heat sensory vision thing seem very familiar plot devices, the ending is also a bit of a rip-off of Jurassic Park (1992) but that's just me being picky I suppose. I wasn't sure about the cliffhanger ending either, I don't know if there is going to be a second season but even if there is your going to have to wait a long time to see this episode resolved. I've watched all six episode of Primeval now & I have to say I have rarely seen a TV series where I care so little about the character's, I simply don't like a single person in this show & that makes it incredibly hard to care about anything that's going on. Nick Cutter is a bland hero, Helen is one of the most unlikeable & annoying character's in it, Claudia Brown doesn't seem to do anything & Stephen, Abby & Connor just stand around & occasionally speak for exposition purposes or get into trouble so Nick can 'save' them. As a whole Primeval is fun & has impressive CGI computer monsters but it's forgettable, you have to see them all in order for the continuous story to make sense & the individual episode story lines just feel too familiar, worth watching if there's nothing else on but not much else.
It looks like Primeval had a fair amount of money spent on it & again it's worth repeating that the special effects are mightily impressive for a British TV show, the predator type creature in this episode looks great & would probably scare the younger audience members. As usual it's well made with decent production values, the acting is OK although I still think Lucy Brown is terrible.
Primeval #1.6 is an OK end to an OK series, although having said that it's not technically the end since it finishes on a cliffhanger which will probably be resolved at the start of season two if it ever gets made. Worth a watch I suppose as mindless light hearted fun but not much else.
