Despite being a television creation, our favourite time lord has had a long association with the printed page. More than one fan over the years has revealed that they discovered Doctor Who through reading the popular Target novelisations of the television series, rather the onscreen original. When the series went into its long sixteen year hiatus in the nineties however, the Doctor Who novel really came of age, at first under the aegis of Virgin Publishing, and later under BBC Books’ own imprint. Although the novels carried over many of the same authors between companies.
By the time the programme came back in 2005, the Doctor had enjoyed well over 200 adventures across his many incarnations, and several writers would eventually create stories for the new series, including Gareth Roberts and Paul Cornell. So far Cornell is only writer to have seen his own novel Human Nature realised as a television adventure,...

Non-Stop
Composed by John Ottman
Varese Sarabande Records
The latest entry in Liam Neeson’s Career Resurgence Extravaganza, Non-Stop has Neeson’s alcoholic air marshal Bill Marks unravel a mysterious bomb threat aboard a flight from New York to London. (Said flight is, in fact, non-stop.) When it’s not withholding key pieces of its mystery, Jaume Collet-Serra’s thriller is both tense and supremely silly — imagine Flightplan’s laser focus on its central character with Speed’s one-upsmanship.
Having previously scored Collet-Serra’s Unknown (also starring Neeson), John Ottman’s no stranger to genre. From Eight-Legged Freaks to Gothika, he’s also scored nearly all of Bryan Singer’s films since the early days of Public Access. His work in Singer’s ill-fated Superman Returns is a standout highlight, showing a deep reverence for John Williams’ importance to the original’s iconography. In short, Ottman has a flexible toolkit,...

In a more fair world, one where television shows are not judged by the announcement of their intention to exist but instead by the content of the episodes they produce (which is to say, a world without Twitter), we would keep our mouths shut and wait for Heroes: Reborn to hit the airwaves next year before deeming it the mediocre thing it has every chance of being. But my editors tell me that taking a respite from obsessing over True Detective “might be healthy” for me. And anyways, there are some legit things to fret in theory about the...

Steve Talley is set as one of the leads in Lauren Iungerich’s ABC comedy pilot Damaged Goods. Described as a comedy about the sexual politics that have changed between men and women in this post-feminist era, it revolves around three damaged women and two damaged men who explore the minutiae of love and relationships. Talley, repped by Domain and Framework, will play one of the men, Jason, a lovable ladies man who sabotages his relationships. He’s coming off FX pilot Death Pact and is currently recurring on The Crazy Ones. John Gemberling has been added to Marry Me, NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot from David Caspe, about a young couple, Jake (Marino) and Annie (Wilson), who get engaged, something they quickly realize is harder than it looks. Gemberling, repped by CAA and Principato-Young, will play Gil, Jake’s best friend, who’s divorced and pines over his ex-girlfriend.

Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich is back on pilot duty with a pickup at ABC for her comedy Damaged Goods, which had a pilot production commitment. It is one of two pilot orders to single-camera comedies from female creators at ABC this morning, along with the My Fair Lady-esque Selfie, by Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek. With Suburgatory not doing well with its rebooted third season, tying a series low last night, is ABC eyeing a successor in Selfie? Both pilots hail from Warner Bros TV, where Kapnek is under an overall deal through her Piece Of Pie Prods. and Iungerich had a script deal. Damaged Goods is described as a comedy about the sexual politics that have changed between men and women in this post-feminist era. Related: ABC Pilots 2014 Inspired by My Fair Lady, Selfie tells the story of a self-obsessed twentysomething woman who is more concerned with “likes” than being liked.

ABC just picked up two comedy pilots with wildly different summaries. One these potential shows has a hooky title and a description that seems engaging and colorful, the others sounds more like a college elective class. See what you think of these two ideas for new comedies next season, both from talented writers of popular shows: Selfie from writer Emily Kapnek (Suburgatory). Logline: “Comedy inspired by My Fair Lady tells the story of a self-obsessed 20-something woman who is more concerned with ‘likes’ than being liked. GTA V's online component, GTA Online, has been patched again, and the fixes come with goodies...
If you're one of the legions of fans living out a life of crime in the massively popular GTA Online, then you'll certainly be happy that Rockstar has released the latest 1.06 'Beach Bum' update.
This update features a selection of new (and free) beach-themed vehicles, a couple of free weapons, new clothes and some extra jobs (30 of 'em). This is great, and offers even more content to the already sprawling, if a little repetitive, title, but it's the bug fixes that'll get most experienced players' attention.
The 1.06 update claims to have fixed all sorts of cheap exploits used by players to get an advantage, instances of players losing vehicles, and other mission-related problems. There's quite a lengthy list, and the patch also includes a slew of gameplay tweaks,...

Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich is having a banner development season following her three-year stint at MTV. After landing a pilot production commitment at ABC for single-camera comedy Damaged Goods, Iungerich has nabbed a put pilot commitment at NBC for another single-camera project, Bitch Off The ‘Ol Block, for which she has reunited with former MTV boss David Janollari, now a Universal TV-based producer. Written by Iungerich, Bitch centers on a young professional woman whose life is turned upside down when her biological daughter, who turns out to be a younger smart-ass version of herself, moves in with her and her roommates. ‘It takes a village’ takes on a whole new meaning in this ensemble comedy about a group of friends who become an unorthodox surrogate family. Loosely inspired by the upcoming birth of Iungerich’s first daughter as she imagines what kind of child she might raise, Bitch deals...

Lauren Iungerich is moving full steam ahead.
After departing her MTV series "Awkward" earlier this year, she has already landed a deal at ABC for a new comedy, Deadline reports.
Single camera comedy "Damaged Goods," created and executive produced by Iungerich, has landed at ABC with a pilot production commitment that has a series penalty behind it. The new series is about how the sexual politics have changed between men and women in this post-feminist era.
Iungrich has an impressive resume so far: she created and ran breakout comedy "Awkward" for the first three seasons, as well as wrote and executive produced the half-hour comedy pilot "Hot Mess." She left both earlier this year ("Awkward" was recently renewed for a fourth season, though with new showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler replacing Iungerich).

I need a few minutes to catch my breath after what can be remembered as one of the most emotional and gory finales in Grey’s Anatomy history.
We were warned. We knew this episode was going to be rough. Someone was going to die. The only problem? Knowing it’s going to happen doesn’t make it any easier. So let’s get to it for the last time this season. Put down those tissues, time to discuss “Flight."

First dates – we've all been there. The sweaty palms. The uncertainty. The paranoia. Get the first date right, and you feel like you're on top of the world. Get it wrong, and it makes you feel like the entire population of couples are laughing in your face.
So spare a thought for the poor old Doctor, as he prepares to take Rose on their first date – well, Rose says as much in New Earth, but oddly, it's not really a date that he should remember with fondness, given that he makes screw-up after screw-up in The End Of The World. Consider the following rules:
The only sort of girl who would fall for this bravado would be the type that gatecrashes every Top Gear filming session or has a shrine to afro-headed goon Clarkson. The Doctor, however, is keen to show off his amazing time/space machine, furiously working the pump (yes,...

Sorry folks, but this review begins with one of those “I was there when...” anecdotes.
Oddly enough though, it's probably the most terrified I've been when watching Doctor Who, even more than when I was three years old and running out of the room screaming at the title music. No – this time, I was fearful of the much-touted revamp being a complete dog's dinner.
So there I was with my wife Ally, along with our friends Jacqui and Richard. It was, I think, the Saturday of the Easter weekend. We'd heard all about the big, exciting launch of Doctor Who, now bang-up-to-date for a 21st century take on a show that had once been scorned at for being cheap old hat. My expectations were not particularly high, to say the least.
And out of all of us, I was the only Who fan in the building – Ally, Jacqui and Richard...

For those of us who were disappointed in the Season 2 finale, Monday's (Sept. 13) "90210" premiere more than made up for it.
If I had to think of my biggest critique of the series, I would have to say it often stops just short of going there. Tonight's premiere went there and then some.
I'm pretty sure some viewers thought the way the show tied up loose ends from last season, such as the break up of the Wilson family or Annie's (Shenae Grimes) hit-and-run wasn't done too well. And I was sure it would annoy me to have those things wrapped up with dialogue, too. Surprisingly, though, I wasn't mad at "90210" for it.
Let's face it, those storylines were badly handled last season and the faster we got past them in the new season, the better. And it feels so good to move on. Movin' on.
Earthquake a go-go: I loved...

This interview is part of our ongoing series related to The Influence Project.
When I saw that Dave Allen--the original bassist for the seminal post-punk band Gang of Four and the digital anthropologist at the Portland-based ad agency/production shop North--was involved in The Influence Project, I knew he should talk to Jason Harris. Harris is the president of the Sf-based ad agency/production shop Mekanism--the company producing The Influence Project with Fast Company--and a bassist who plays with the band Slumberparty. Though Slumberparty is no Gang of Four (yet, who knows?), I thought each would admire in the other their kindred spirits and have an interesting conversation about social media, rock and roll and how the punk rock ethos exists on the Internet. The exchange doesn't disappoint and even reveals a sultry definition of the word pampelmoose. A nice little bonus.

Long before I had actually seen Azazel Jacobs’ second feature, The GoodTimesKid, I had heard tell of its final scene, in which the Gang of Four song “Damaged Goods” is played in its entirety. It takes a certain kind of confidence to use a Gang of Four song in a cinematic context. Deceptively simple post-punk loaded with weighty narrative, it’s virtually impossible to match this music with imagery without the filmmaker’s voice getting lost in the noise, without the soundtrack seemingly functioning as a mission statement above and beyond what the rest of the film has to say. Certainly, the thesis of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette seems most articulate in its opening scene, set to a lengthy excerpt of Gang of Four’s “Natural’s Not in It” -- the song serves as a key to unlocking that film’s visual indulgence, ...
