Make it look as though it was an accident
jotix1003 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Black comedy has to be done properly. In the wrong hands, however, even with the best intentions, it will not have the effect the creator wanted to accomplish.

Such is the case with "Que parezca un accidente" directed by Gerardo Herrero, a man that has had a string of successes in projects such as "The Secret in Their Eyes", "The Son of the Bride", to name just two. He is a producer with a keen eye for good material. Unfortunately, that was not to be the fate of this Spanish entry directed by Mr. Herrero. As written by Fernando Castets and Guillermo De La Guardia, the film does not make an impression.

The great Federico Luppi has some success playing the killer for hire, Arturo. Carmen Maura, as Pilar, has some good moments playing the mother-in-law with a sixth sense to get the right vibes about her daughter's husband whom she knows is two-timing his wife. What does not work is the sudden appearance of Horacio, the son Arturo left behind in Argentina who wants to follow his father's footsteps in crime, only to mess up things royally.

The film starts with a good premise, but the writers or the creators have no sense in what direction they are going. Some sections are dull, while other situations have the desired effect.

A very funny dark comedy

Warning: Spoilers
I was surprised to see the low rates this movie has received until now and I have decided to do a little justice to this movie by posting a positive comment. The movie is a dark comedy with many funny moments. As you could see above, it's about a very cautious mother-in-law watching her son-in-law very closely, in order not to cheat on her daughter. This exaggerated caution is not caused by a great love for her daughter (for whose happiness she's not very concerned) but rather because of the awful headaches she has (caused by her 6th sense of detecting the "cheating of a man"). The mother-in-law is played very well by Carmen Maura - maybe you have seen her playing also in some of the movies of Pedro Almodovar (like "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" and "Volver"). I have appreciated the performances of all the other actors. It's a non-pretentious movie (nothing profound is said here) but for a comedy it's OK and a good option for spending an evening on the couch (especially if outside is cold and raining).
