Mr. & Mrs. Smith definitely didn’t surpass expectations, it mostly left us with question marks for expressions because of how lackluster the show really was. I suppose you could say there are some good parts; you’ve got beautiful sets and some fun fashion choices, but most importantly, a bunch of cameos that are meant to enhance the show considering how dull it is otherwise. Not to say that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are incapable of holding our attention, but it’s probably a mix of the writing and the pacing of this show that had me completely bored by the end of it. And, no, even these incredible special appearances did not pique my interest in any way. However, they do add a little bit of fun, even if briefly, to the mostly tedious show. Mr. & Mrs. Smith follows spies in this new spyverse, where there is...

Luxury Swiss brand Tag Heuer seems to think it should, especially for its iconic motoring-inspired Carrera model, which celebrated its 60th with a glitzy cinema-focused event in central London on Thursday night.
Longtime Tag Heuer ambassadors Patrick Dempsey and Ryan Gosling were arguably the highest-profile attendees, both brought onstage by company boss Frédéric Arnault to discuss their relationship with the company (Dempsey said he first got involved with it nine years ago while racing at Le Mans). Arnault also welcomed Euphoria‘s Jacob Elordi and introduced Alexandra Daddario as its latest celebrity timepiece-wearer (alongside some new photos of her brandishing one of the latest Tag Heuer models). Heartstopper star Kit Connor and House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock were among the guests in the crowd (as was a heavily photographed Porsche 911 Carrera).

Ana de Armas is gearing up to host “Saturday Night Live” for the first time, but why hasn’t her “Ghosted” co-star Chris Evans ever led the charge at Studio 8H? In a new interview with Et Canada, Evans admitted that he’s avoided hosting “Saturday Night Live” because the thought makes him so terrified. Perhaps it has something to do with his close friends telling him he’s not very funny over the years.
“Well, now a cameo I can handle. I’ve avoided hosting ‘SNL’ like the plague for years now just because I’m so scared. It’s terrifying to me,” Evans said. “To me, it would just be one of those things that every single night I would wake up in a cold sweat. A cameo sounds great, that’s perfect. In and out… get your toes wet. But hosting, I tip my hat to her.

Netflix shocked the industry last week with the news that two respected film executives, Lisa Nishimura and Ian Bricke, were leaving the company in an apparent nod toward austerity. But the move left many questioning just what Netflix’s strategy is for its cinematic future, and whether it will lead to a power struggle between co-ceo Ted Sarandos, who is adamant that Netflix is a streaming-first company, and film chairman Scott Stuber, who has stated that he would like Netflix to become a true cinematic force to be reckoned with, an aspiration that may require a far more substantial theatrical investment.
“There are concerns being whispered around the industry that this move from Netflix could be signaling an end to the high-quality content we’ve seen them get behind in recent years, and — potentially — a return to the more formulaic ‘sure thing’ kind of content that is lower cost but more certain financially,...

Jessica Henwick is still riding high from the BAFTA awards when she sits down with Variety to discuss her pivot to writing and directing. Her short film, “Bus Girl,” didn’t win in the Best Live Action Short category on the night but Henwick appears genuinely thrilled simply to have been nominated for the project, which she wrote, directed and starred in.
“I really had very low expectations for ‘Bus Girl,’ my first short,” Henwick says. “I did not think it would get into festivals, I certainly didn’t think it would get the BAFTA nomination. I literally just did it because I wanted to see: am I capable or is [directing] a fantasy? Because I didn’t go to film school or drama school. I dropped out of school when I was 16 and I have no formal qualifications at all. So it really was a trial by fire.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story has become the third most-watched original film Netflix has ever released.
The film, a sequel to Rian Johnson’s 2019 murder mystery Knives Out, was released on the streaming service before Christmas.
With 209.4 million hours viewed, Glass Onion has leapfrogged films such as The Grey Man and Bird Box to claim its place in the top three.
However, it currently falls short of Netflix’s two most-watched films ever: Don’t Look Up and Red Notice.
Don’t Look Up, released in December 2021, is an environmental satire directed by The Big Short’s Adam McKay, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep. The film garnered 359.8 million hours viewed within the first 28 days of release.
Red Notice, also released in 2021, is currently the most-watched English-language film on the streaming service, having accumulated 364 million hours viewed. The film is a twisty heist thriller starring Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne...

‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ Review: Mortality Casts a Shadow on Otherwise Amusing Animated Sequel
This review of “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” was first published on November 26.
It’s been 11 years since the last “Puss in Boots” movie, and 12 years since the last proper installment of the original blockbuster “Shrek” movie franchise. So it makes sense that this new kids movie would want to grow up with its former audience. But “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” may have overshot that mark: The latest fairy-tale comedy adventure is all about how living in an old folks’ home is tragic and depressing and only slightly preferable to our inevitable, terrifying deaths.
Unless, of course, you find a wishing star!
Um… yay?
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” stars Antonio Banderas as the voice of the titular hero, a feline in fabulous footwear who has had an impressive number of daredevil adventures. At the start of the movie he’s usurped a corrupt governor’s...

In this week’s cover story for Variety, filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo are clear that their dedication to their own independent studio, Agbo, means the directors of “Avengers: Endgame” don’t expect to make another movie with Marvel Studios any time soon.
“We won’t be ready to do anything with Marvel until the end of the decade,” Joe Russo says.
The Russos have, however, already returned to Marvel’s parent company, Disney. Through Agbo, they’re producing a live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1997 animated feature “Hercules,” with Guy Ritchie — who helmed the 2019 live-action remake of “Aladdin” — set to direct.
“We have an amazing relationship with them that we’ve built over a decade,” says Joe Russo. “I think we have a point of view on how they can stretch the limits of their IP moving forward, rather than playing IP management.”

Netflix is really keen on developing the next big James Bond/ Mission: Impossible-style franchise. The Grey Man apparently did pretty big business, as did Red Notice and Extraction, and now the streamer is again stepping into the espionage game with Heart of Stone. The film stars Gal Gadot as secret agent Rachel Stone, who, according to the official synopsis, “is the only woman who stands between her powerful, global, peace-keeping organization and the loss of its most valuable — and dangerous — asset.”
During their Tudum event, Netflix released a teaser/sizzle reel for the film, which is being directed by Wild Rose/ The Aeronauts director Tom Harper. In it, we get a glimpse at the “grounded” action, which seems very much in the mode of Atomic Blonde or John Wick. While Jamie Dornan and Bollywood star Alia Bhatt co-star, this seems like a solo star vehicle for Gadot, which is...

In "The Grey Man," the Russo brothers' latest expansive (and expensive) collaboration with screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, Billy Bob Thornton gets the "and" credit. That's fitting in terms of screentime, but it doesn't capture what Thornton brings to the film. His presence is the skeleton key to unlocking Marcus, McFeely, and the Russos' intentions. Thornton was one of the 1990s most prominent talents, a force in front of and behind the camera — sometimes in the same picture. "The Grey Man" deliberately rips its espionage and quip-to-dialogue ratio from the decade that made Thornton famous. Thornton gets this. He calibrated his whole performance as Donald Fitzroy — from its winking elements to sincerest stretches — knowing what "The Gray Man" is after. It's smooth. It's electric. That's peak Billy Bob Thornton.
Thornton has rarely stopped working or ceased being smooth or electric since his heyday more than two decades ago. He's...
