Mumm-ra is a character that has been around for thousands of years, maybe even millions. In the first season of the series we learned that he even remembers when Third Earth was still the First Earth closest to its Sun, which means that he remembers changes of literally, astronomical proportions.
Having him returning was not really a surprise, but his new plans were. He wants to bring back the Lunattacks, some evil beings even more vicious than the Mutants, said by the Mutants themselves.
They were imprisoned in rock using lava and now they are going to be freed by the not very willing Mutants to aid them in the battle against the forces of good. Nevertheless, the Thundercats are not completely off guard, because Cheetara, who has proved to be correct many times, has a bad feeling about the subject and Snarf thinks he listened to Mumm-ra's voice talking to the Mutants at Castle Plun-Darr
