Settlement Day
Prismark1017 December 2021
Everybody in the firm of Castleton and Main are having an off day. In fact they are behaving so out of character, it is a wonder they have any clients left.

Susan Crawford killed her husband and a pedestrian while drink driving.

Her husband was a wealthy businessman, a client of the firm. David reckons she needs to plead guilty and go for a lighter sentence due to mitigating circumstances.

Only at court an inexperienced barrister turns up and Susan is sentenced to one year in prison. She also now has to meet a settlement claim from the family of the pedestrian. The car it seems was not insured.

If the antics of the ineffectual barrister was not enough. The late husband had previously gifted some shares to Margaret. Something that could be breach of ethics.

A family friend of the Crawfords, dismayed that Susan has gone to jail, wants the return of the shares that have jumped in value. It could meet the liability to the pedestrian's family. Unfortunately Margaret has sold them for only a modest profit.

A mess David Main has to sort out and once again he relies on his nerve and cunning.

Peter Findon tries to take a leave out of Main's book but he ends up causing more trouble for himself. His wealthy wife has an investment account at the firm, money she planned to start her own business

Peter has taken money from that account to pay for a fur coat. Action that leaves his wife unhappy and him fired.

A lot of it is rather preposterous although it can happen. Having to rely on a junior barrister who is inexperienced is an occupational hazard.
