Two games in one

Call of Juarez is both a first-person shooter and a stealth game. You play some levels as Reverend Ray - a creepily charismatic bandit turned priest but still willing to use his guns - and others as his nephew Billy, always sneaking around enemies.

The FPS with Reverend Ray is gripping and a lot of fun, with nice ideas like duels, the concentration mode, effective dual wielding mechanics.

The levels with Billy were a chore, and I played them only to reach the next Reverend Ray section. Developers did a far better work with action than stealth: the former crackles with excitement, the latter is clunky and repetitive.

Not that bad

First, I played "Call of Juarez – Bound in Blood" (2009)… and I really loved the game, and I was also interested in the first one and in "COJ – The Cartel". Now, when it comes to the first one, I was pretty disappointed. What's the deal? Well, the game looks attractive, the music theme, the main menu, graphics are good and the plot is interesting. But, the gameplay sucks. First of all, you are easy to kill. No matter the difficulty, you are an easy target… after one shot, your health is increasingly low… damn it. Especially when you play with Billy (the other playable character is reverend Ray). Billy is impossible, the idea for him to be a stealth character doesn't make things interesting. OK, I admit, I don't like stealth games, but I can adapt to it for a while… Also, Billy is clumsy, and extremely fragile, but, because of his youngish strength and agility, he can climb up to boxes, and other stuff… well that's an advantage. But, the game hasn't even start, and the craziness is released pretty early, everyone hates Billy, everyone wants him dead… and he doesn't have a chance to use a gun… well… not at the beginning, but later. And you can't choose between the characters, like in the second game. You must endure Billy's crap first… to get to the second character Reverend Ray… Ray is actually an important character, he is a former soldier and deserter, in this game he is a village priest that goes after Billy. Ray is, perhaps one of the craziest characters ever to be shown in the video game. He is a religious fanatic that spreads God's word and justice. He also has a bible as a weapon in his weapon inventory… really? Are you kidding me? And you can use it in one hand… and in the other you hold a gun… that's pretty crazy, but badass. Overall, I think this game was a petty attempt to achieve something far more better in "COJ – Bound in Blood" (2009) which I found more better. The gameplay is more decent and easy use and characters are more agile and deadly and you can choose them. If you are interested, play this game… but don't forget the sequels.
