Zoinks! It's the Ape Man
callanvass24 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Daphne has an uncle who is directing a horror movie about a crazy Ape Man. The Ape Man has problems following direct orders, and trouble commences. It turns out the Ape Man is apparently real and is terrorizing people on the set. The stuntman Carl shows up in a treasure box, telling people the Ape Man threw him in there. The Gang is inquisitive as usual, and wants to solve the mystery. This was another fantastic episode. I don't find apes all that threatening, but I enjoyed myself heavily, nonetheless. Scooby does something very rare for him, and that's act tough and fearless in a couple scenes. It was really funny to watch him stare The Ape Man down successfully, and scare him off. I'm so used to him hamming it up by being scared, he does do that here, obviously, but he does act macho as well. There are some great gags in this one as well. I loved how the ape man fiddled with a Scooby Doo Mask, while Scooby looked in the mirror. Scooby & Shaggy clowning around with masks at the end was hilarious as well. Like most Scooby villains, the culprit is highly predictable. I also thought the ending was anti climatic, and the ending didn't have the panache that a Scooby episode usually has. It's extremely entertaining stuff overall, and a hoot to watch. Very much recommend for Scooby lovers

Never Ape an Ape Man

Warning: Spoilers
The Ape Man is not a classic Scooby Doo villain in my opinion, not because he isn't a good villain, he is, but because somehow I have never heard of him. It's strange because all the other's are familiar even if only by their name or face namely Miner '49er. But the Ape Man reminds me of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Piltdown Man not a perfectly good Scooby Doo episode!

Never Ape an Ape Man. Pretty good.
morantjavonte11 August 2016
The gang are being invited by Daphne's uncle to help film a movie a horror movie of an Ape Man terrorizing the people. Only problem is, the character has come to life and is scaring everyone away.

I had to re-watch this a couple of nights ago to give my thoughts on this. It is an episode I did not see much as a child. I overall found it to be pretty good. It's nowhere near the best but it's far from the worst. Well actually, there is no worst episode. This episode did had a few funny moments and one of my favorites was when Scooby was trying to figure out why something was wrong with his reflection in the mirror. I also like how we saw a brave Scooby-Doo moment here.

The villain was called the Ape-Man being described as an half-ape, half-man. He just looked like a normal gorilla to me and is not that memorable.

Overall good episode. 8/10

Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

S1E7: Never Ape an Ape Man (1969)

The gang visits a movie set where Daphne's uncle is working as a director on a new horror movie. The villain, a man in an ape suit, turns out to be something more frightening when a real ape man shows up. This here is certainly another good episode in the series as we get plenty of nice laughs and of course a nice monster to go along with it. The episode contains a lot of nice jokes including some aimed at movie making. One of the highlights takes place inside a costume department where we see Shaggy and Scooby trying on some new masks. The monster here is also pretty good, although he is certainly more gorilla than actual ape man. The only weak thing is the actual mystery as it's pretty easy to figure out what's going on and who's doing it. The strange thing is that they never really try to play the mystery up any.

Episode: B+

"Wait a minute, wait a minute, watch this shot"

Warning: Spoilers
Ik I might be giving a little to much of a high rating, but it's hard, this one was a favorite of mine as a kid. The monster is not scary, the person who it is probably the most obvious in the whole original series, but this is prolly one of my most rewatched episodes.

Pros- This one is way more funnier than most not really being that creepy, but the (pretty close to) abandon movie set is really good atmosphere which this show always seems to nail. The gang are showing up here because Daphne's uncle is a famous movie director, which I'm not gonna gripe on for to long, because I could believe Daphne has a famous movie director uncle, but when they do it over and over and they know every single celebrity it's get a little old. There is some of my favorite gags in this episode like Shaggy and Scooby trying on wigs and playing pool in the billiards room. Shaggy and Scooby steal this episode and the scene in the billiards room is iconic with Scooby counting the heads on the wall and one is missing and shaggy is distracted by pool. The music slaps and I'm a sucker for the Hanna Barbera and Will Hanna 60s animation. Also quick add amazing performance by Carl when he was "shoved" in the trunk and locked in by the ape man. It was a good attempt but sadly did not work. Also they did a good job at making the ape man a threat for his design. The scene when the apeman almost kills Candy on the bridge is iconic as well as Scooby saving her 🍑. This scene showed brave Scooby which we don't get nearly enough of, he didn't even ask for a Scooby snack bruh. Really good episode.

Cons- Well let's start with the obvious it was Carl, when I was younger I was really hoping they didn't go with this ending but they did, normally the pool of suspects isn't that wide but it's not gonna be Daphnes uncle, cause he wouldn't wreck his own shoot. The only other person was Candy who left earlier in the episode. Also I wasn't a huge fan of the way the figured out it was Carl, I mean I liked the idea of taking a picture of the culprit without their mask on its cool, it was just executed poorly. If you show the bald head of someone and there is only bald person in the episode, that's gonna ruin the surprise for when you try to reveal it 🤦.

It's not a perfect ep and I did have some complaints but honestly this is a really fun one if you ain't looking for a "super scary" episode, and some great gags. The Ape Man is pretty intimidating when he almost wrecked Candy he is a threat even though if he isn't real scary. I'll give them props when he shows his teeth and starts roaring he looked pretty ferocious there.

Scooby Doo and the Ape Man in another hugely enjoyable episode
TheLittleSongbird11 July 2016
'Scooby Doo Where are You' was the first Scooby Doo incarnation, and to me it's still the best. "Never Ape an Ape Man" may be in some ways a lesser episode, but even a lesser 'Scooby Doo Where are You?' episode can still be hugely enjoyable.

"Never Ape an Ape Man" certainly is hugely enjoyable. A film set may not be the creepiest setting/location for a Scooby Doo episode, but it is still effective. The animation is lively, atmospheric, lushly coloured and nicely drawn as always, the Ape Man actually being genuinely intimidating. The music adds to the impact the atmosphere creates, and it is very difficult to resist the classic theme song, along with the opening credits where it is so fun spotting and recognising the villains, that is one of the most iconic in animation.

There are creepier and spookier episodes than "Never Ape an Ape Man", the closest it gets to creepy is the Ape Man's roar and when the gang try to trap him in the basement. What "Never Ape an Ape Man" is though is very funny, there is some hugely enjoyable and often hilarious dialogue and even better are individual scenes, the standout is in the costume department with the masks but the parts with the mirror, the stuffed ape and in the billiard room also make a positive impression.

Scooby and Shaggy are such likable characters, also love Scooby's more macho and tough attitude at times in the episode when he barks at the ape to get him away, and their chemistry is incredibly charming. The rest of the gang are fine too, and the Ape Man is cool and intimidating and the supporting characters solid enough. The voice acting is very good, particularly again from Don Messick and Casey Kasem in interpretations done by different people over the years but still remain unequalled.

Unfortunately, it is true that the true identity of the Ape Man is so easy to figure out, it was obvious early on in the episode and then it gives it away too early just before the final trap. The most obvious perpetrator is still the Witch Doctor in "Decoy for a Dognapper" but the Ape Man is one of the more glaring examples along with 49er. The ending is also agreed a bit anti-climactic and is not the most imaginative of final traps, the one in the basement had a little more imagination than that and that was halfway through the episode.

Overall, hugely enjoyable Scooby fare but there's better in the series. 8/10 Bethany Cox
