This could almost be called a sister episode to last week's A Time To Die as both episodes are given a huge lift from composer Leith Stevens and writer William Welch. In Blow Up, Nelson turns paranoid and sends the Seaview crashing to the bottom.
Year one's The Fear Makers and year one's Mutiny featured Nelson going nuts and both hours could be called some of the best scripted hours of television ever made. So how do you do this theme again in Blow Up? You add some flashy Seaview miniature effects, you get composer Leith Stevens to do a great loud score and you add a touch of classic Irwin Allen disaster to the theme. But that together and you have Blow Up.
Richard Basehart is outstanding as always and Del Monroe (Kowalski) is very pleasing in the scenes concerning a mutiny on Seaview. On top of that, we have a pre-Poseidon Adventure moment when insane Nelson orders the Seaview into trouble and the concerned Captain is not happy with the move. Then the disaster happens: Listen to the wonderfully loud Stevens score when the Seaview falls apart and hits bottom, that scene would have been nothing without the Stevens music playing over it!
