As Matthews and Williams pull up outside the couple's motel room, there are clear shots of the very distinctive Los Angeles City Hall building in the background. Although the series was obviously filmed throughout the LA area, it's stated at various points that they're not in California.
The helicopter shown flying before the car is spotted was the Highway Patrol helicopter. The pilot would have radioed headquarters directly instead of going through air traffic control.
The male robber says no one has made the motorcycle as a getaway vehicle. Mathews had used tire impressions in the past, and a motorcycle with sidecar would leave a very distinctive tire pattern.
While talking to Williams at HQ, Mathews says "...if they haven't passed (Officer) Dennis, they must be on their way back in the other direction." The officer that was in the area of the motorcycle that reported it did not pass him was Larrabee.
After getting the tip from the motel manager, Mathews tells Williams the motel is a quarter mile away and they leave HQ. In the following scene, Mathews and Williams are shown driving on a rural road. Both Highway Patrol HQ and the motel were shown to be in business districts, so the motel was much further away than Mathews had stated.
