Director Paul Hough's The Human Race will be available on VOD, iTunes, and in theaters on Friday, June 13. Recently Hough had a chat with fellow director (and actor in The Human Race) Richard Gale (The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon) about his new movie.
We got a chance to eavesdrop on the Q&A between Hough and Gale so that you can dig the conversation between these two top-notch filmmakers below.
Richard Gale: Up until I met Paul Hough, I had never killed anyone before, in a movie or otherwise. I'm first and foremost a filmmaker - I made the horror comedy short The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon, which went viral on YouTube and is currently being developed into a feature film.
Paul Hough: I met Richard on the festival circuit when my film The Angel played at festivals with his amazing short Criticized.

Winner of 12 film festival awards, Richard Gale's short film The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon tells the epic story of one man's encounter with what could be the most relentless murderer of all time. Based on an idea for a short comedy sketch, the concept was expanded into a mini-epic... a faux-movie trailer with a 10-minute running time, for a feature film with an alleged running time of over nine hours. Starring Paul Clemens (The Beast Within), Brian Rohan (Criticized), Fay Kato, Melissa Paladino and Mike Kacey. Due to the vast number of locations and sequences, the short film required 22 days of shooting (more shooting days than on his feature film The Proposal!) Accomplished with a small cast and crew, the film takes place all over the world, but was shot entirely in Southern California, and by utilizing a greenscreen set up in the director's living room.

If you haven’t already realized from the existence of this blog, I love short films. I love watching them, I love making them, I love reading about them, I love everything about them. I truly believe that they are the more difficult to make than their feature-length brethren; they have to tell a complete story in under an hour, and in many cases less than a quarter of that. This is why I am always thrilled when directors feature their (or others’) shorts among the DVD supplements of their movies. Below you’ll find a few of my favorites.
Criticized (on the Seed DVD)
Yes, I agree that Uwe Boll is the Ed Wood of our time, but like Wood, he has excellent taste in other people’s films. When he chose to include Richard Gale’s Criticized, one of the best genre shorts ever, on his Seed disc,...

It’s been an insomnia inducing start to Fantasia’s thirteenth year. The opening night screenings had no noteworthy horror entries, so Paul and I spent the evening reconnecting with festival regulars, watched some non-genre movies, and plotted the next three weeks of cinematic mayhem. On Friday, after a rest-free three hours of sleep, we soldiered through a painful midnight screening, and are already feeling delirious, just two days in. This is going to be our sixth year covering the fest, and frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
First, a little bit of bookkeeping. In addition to this blog, you can also follow us on Twitter, under @dreadfantasia. Also, if our under slept ramblings don’t satisfy your taste for intelligent movie writing, we recommend you check out Kier-La Janisse’s official Fantasia blog. She’s also doing “whatever the verb of twitter is, and I refuse...

FX artist turned director Dean Jones got in touch with comments and a couple of exclusive photos from a promotional video (see below) for his upcoming sequel to Tobe Hooper’s 2003 Toolbox Murders remake. You can also have a look at that promo clip for the movie, titled Tbk: The Toolbox Murders, at the bottom of this page.
The new film picks up as the previous movie’s survivors, Nell and Stephen, continue their night of hell when they’re rushed to the nearby Hollywood Memorial Hospital. Meanwhile, detectives Cole and Barnes coordinate with a hard-nosed Lapd criminal profiler to uncover the disfigured killer’s origins, leading to a shocking revelation involving Old Hollywood’s seedy underground and one doctor’s secret past.
The cast is shaping up well, with a number of genre favorites confirmed. Jones has secured Lance Henriksen, Jeffrey Combs, Tony Todd, Red West and Brian Krause,...

The “Really Scary Shorts” program in last year’s Dead Channels Festival of Fantastic Film featured Richard Gale’s Criticized, winner of—count ‘em—15 film festival awards, including Best Short Film at Dead Channels 2007. With Criticized, Gale proved once and for all that it’s the little things in life that matter in a horror movie. In his follow-up—The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon—Gale shifts from the office desk paperclip holder to the kitchen cutlery drawer. Already at its world premiere at Austin’s Fantastic Fest last month, The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon won a special jury prize and saw its equally popular West Coast premiere in this year’s Dead Channels’ “Fantastic Short Films” program. At this point I have to officially crown Richard Gale as the reigning king of “object horror.”...

For those of you who either didn’t read my Seed DVD review or did and just couldn’t help yourselves anyway, chances are you’ve seen the short film that came as part of the DVD package, Richard Gale’s “Criticized”. Not a bad little short, if a bit heavy-handed, but it showcased a filmmaker with promise.
Now Gale is back with another short that is certainly leaning closer to comedy than “Criticized” did: “The Horribly Slow Murderer With the Extremely Inefficient Weapon”, which will premiere during Fantastic Fest’s Short Fuse programming. The film is being described as an "epic story of one man’s encounter with what could be the most relentless murderer of all time". Sounds like fun!
Fangoria got their hands on an exclusive pic from it, which unfortunately does not showcase the titular weapon (I really want to know what it is!), but that...
